Today I emailed an author to ask how to spell one of her character's names. I've read the series as audiobooks and none of the descriptions include his last name. Well now he's married to the main character and she has taken his name. So now I need to know how to spell it.
Have you written to an author? The last time I did was about 40 years ago in 6th grade and that was a homework assignment.

About fifteen years ago my in-laws gave us their old Honda Accord. The car had some issues but one of things it had that I used all the time was a multiple disc CD player. I made some mix tapes to play in it. The one that was in the number one spot had the music I could stand to listen to the most. And listen to it I did.
Now all these years later my husband and my oldest daughter have surprised me by admitting to having recreated that mix tape digitally (independently of each other) in their own music collections. I've caught both of them at one time or another listening to their version of the old mix tape.

Turkey vultures are regular visitors where I live. There are huge colonies of them that roost in the trees. I watch a couple dozen of them swirling every evening and sun themselves every morning.

Kowloon Generic Romance, Volume 9 by Jun Mayuzuki (2023) is the last of the English translated volumes until Volume 10 releases in October. That means I've watched the remainder of the anime without the benefit of having read the source material first.
This volume goes deeper into the mechanics of the current version of the city. To most it's not there. To a select few who have ties to the place, it is there. To an even smaller select few, those who have no knowledge of the previous places, it's also there (Yaomay).

Shortly after the family sapphires go missing. Rose is determined to solve both cases with Lily and Bernie's help.

What came back were results that didn't make sense in the context of what she knew about her father. But she decided to dig further anyway.

A speaker at the annual summer arts festival lists a series of names of people who might be responsible for the disappearance of a young man in the 1960s. Among those names is Kurt Kendrick, the art dealer with a shady past. When the author is murdered, the town is ready to point the finger at Kurt but library director Amy Muir feels there's more going on here.

Call of the Night, Volume 2 by Kotoyama (2020) goes more into the growing relationship between Nazuna (vampire) and Ko (human). We see how Nazuna tries and fails to have fun and how she affords to stay in the city.

For more than 2 years I've been looking for a copy of Nature: specifically volume 353 issue 6341. It's the 19 September 1991 issue.

Spent: A Comic Novel by Alison Bechdel (2025) is the latest graphic novel from the author of Fun Home (2006). I haven't actually read her most famous title but I have read the follow up, Are You My Mother? (2012). I happened to see the book mentioned on social media and decided to give it a read.

The thing that blew my mind when I was there, just how many people had been to see the Hotel del Coronado (I grew up in San Diego).
Typical conversation:

Aussie: Never heard of it. Went on holiday to the States. You ever been to the Hotel Del? Glorious!

Public Anchovy #1 by Mindy Quigley and Holly Adams (Narrator) (2023) is the third book in the Deep Dish mystery series. I completely missed it when it first released and so have read it out of order. Delilah O’Leary and her crew are catering a prohibition themed library fundraiser at a recently restored mansion on the lake.

Nonsense! The Curious Story of Edward Gorey by Lori Mortensen and Chloe Bristol (Illustrator) is a picture book biography of Edward Gorey. I learned about the book from the Pipes In Kids Lit Instagram post. Illustrator Chloe Bristol does an excellent job of making her portraits of Gorey an homage to his artwork (but in color).

She is dismayed to find the body of a homeless man on her shop's doorstep one morning. She is further distressed to learn her artistic employee is the prime suspect.

Curses, Boiled Again! by Shari Randall and Tiffany Morgan (Narrator) (2018) is the start of the Lobster Shack mystery series. Allie Larkin is a dancer who is home recovering from a broken ankle. She's there to watch her grandmother compete in the Best Lobster Roll contest. The contest is a disaster, ending early with all of the judges sick; one of them later dying.

Maria is a curvy Swedish stage actor brought on to star as the female lead on a six season fantasy romance show themed around Norse legends. Her costar is Peter, a character actor who has found his lucky break as the male lead. Before the show began these two had an intense one night stand.

The Staircase in the Woods by Chuck Wendig (2025) reads like Rules for Vanishing by Kate Alice Marshall (2019) meets Skinamarink (2023). In 1998, five high school friends went on a hike and only four came back. The fifth was last seen walking up a staircase in the woods which then disappeared.

The AI Con by Emily M. Bender and Alex Hanna (2025) is the second book about AI I've read. The previous one, Future Tense by Martha Brockenbrough (2024) was written for teens. Bender and Hanna's book is written for adults and thankfully assumes a certain level of understanding of how computers work.

This is another cold case mystery with a body discovered between walls as we've seen in The Walled Flower by Lorraine Bartlett (2012) and Murder in a Cape Cottage by Maddie Day (2022). This time it's a young woman who went missing in the early 1990s.

As with the previous volumes, this flashback is at the start of the volume and serves as counterpoint to the present day events.

Here by Richard McGuire (2014) began as a shorter comic in 1989. In six pages of interlocking panels, dated by year, it overlapped time to tell the story of a very specific space and its inhabitants between the years 500,957,406,073 BC and 2313 AD. This book takes that initial comic and expands it to 304 pages.
