This is pretty pricey (and glass, really??), but I kind of love the idea: some benefits of a fitness tracker and smartphone for kids, without the smartphone. Plus a Tamagotchi!
My oldest kid is still a bit young for something like this, but Internet access sort of freaks me out—and yet I’d love for them to be able to contact me if they need to. Other options in this space are pretty clunky/ugly, so it’s refreshing to see something actually pretty polished looking here.

I got an air quality sensor and air purifier, and have learned:
• opening the windows is the most effective way to decrease particulate matter
• our humidifier pumps out hazardous levels of particles when using tap water (oops)
• waking up w/an irritated throat and sinuses goes away with clean air!
• high particulate matter is correlated with nosebleeds in kidd—and our kid gets chronic nosebleeds
I am happy to have learned all of this but also feel like an idiot for learning it so late. 😭

I just saw that Mozilla is retiring Mozilla Location Services which provided an open, crowdsourced alternative to proprietary location services from Google and other vendors. 😰

This is used by GNOME and thus Fedora, Ubuntu, Endless OS, etc. to help provide OS-level location services without requiring every app to implement its own. And apparently a patent troll is part of the reason Mozilla stopped investing in it. 🙃

I’m still alive!! Feeling better today than any day in the past… week or more? I haven’t updated for a few days but it’s been much of the same, plus caring for my kids who also came down with pretty bad cold symptoms and exhaustion.
We’ve all been quarantined for a week since the onset of symptoms, now. The kids seem to be back to ~100% but are masking in public to be safe (not a bad idea, regardless!).

To be 1000% clear, I would take the uncomfortable side effects of Paxlovid over debilitating COVID-19 symptoms or lasting long-COVID symptoms. And if you’re able to get an anti-viral treatment for COVID, I would still definitely recommend it!
But it’s not some miracle drug without its own side effects. 😣
Otherwise, I seem to be doing as well as I could hope today. Still low stamina, still a bit of a cough.

Day four-ish: we all slept in a bit which was probably good for our health but also always makes the kids kind of wild since the day’s schedule is disrupted.
(Oh, yeah, my partner and two kids also have it!)
I knew about the constant nasty taste that Paxlovid gives you, but yesterday I found out the *other* top symptom. 🚽

Oh, I was able to get Paxlovid yesterday and took my first dose in the evening, second this morning. Yep, that nasty bitter taste is still there. But, I think that may be helping me feel a lot better a lot faster than otherwise.
I still have a pretty nasty cough that comes and goes, and my head feels like it’s pressurized (making those coughs painful!), but I’m feeling *much* better than yesterday over all. I’m just trying to remind myself to not overdo it even if I think I’m feeling better.

I rested most of the day with occasional times getting up to help care for the kids and get food or meds or whatever. Feeling MUCH better this evening, but it’s like COVID is debuffing my stamina bar to 20% compared to usual. I feel relatively normal, do like two things, and then feel like I just ran a marathon and need to catch my breath and rest.

Day 3-ish of COVID-19 symptoms: this morning was ROUGH and I was super winded doing menial things like dishes or preparing food. At one point I felt suddenly and overwhelmingly exhausted and warm (but wasn’t actually running a fever, probably because I’ve been taking pain medication) and had to lay down in the middle of the kitchen for a minute. 😵‍💫

Oh! And there were two entirely different telehealth options for no discernable reason, and one of them just refuses to work in Firefox! Yay!
Because when I'm struggling to breathe and stay upright with COVID, what I want to do is install another web browser. 👍

It also kept reloading the page, losing all of my progress through their 217-question survey before they'll allow me the privilege of waiting for an hour with my webcam on for a doctor to show up.

Welp, COVID-19 got me. Feeling pretty miserable, and reminded that American healthcare just sucks in every possible way.
Today I went to my insurance website to try to do a telehealth appointment like I have in the past, and of course it's completely different, completely broken, and says it can't confirm my insurance information. You know, the telehealth option THROUGH MY INSURANCE THAT I'M LOGGED IN WITH.

@npub1zvj…lcud I don't know the internals of how Chromium works, but yeah I'd say if the spec isn't implemented on the desktop, it should fall back to whatever it did before; that's fair.
My issue is insinuating that the FreeDesktop Dark style that I started at elementary with lots of cross-desktop collaboration between elementary, GNOME, and KDE in 2019 and has now been shipping for 3 years in elementary, 2 years in KDE, and a year and a half in GNOME is "some arcane GNOME specific setting." :)

@npub1zvj…lcud I'm sorry, but the FreeDesktop dark style spec isn't "some arcane GNOME-specific setting", if that's what you're getting at?
Unless they implemented it terribly wrong, the preference is respected on KDE, elementary OS, GNOME, and any other desktop wanting to be FreeDesktop interoperable.

My father-in-law and I were drinking the same beer and almost got them mixed up. A couple of weeks ago, a friend and I mixed our beers up and created an awkward situation…
So, obviously a 3D printer is the solution! I present: the beer bottle charm print.

For work-adjacent reasons, I was recently looking into basically preserving a Flash game to run on Endless OS—well, ideally any Linux-based OS as a Flatpak since that’s what Endless OS uses.
I was pointed towards Ruffle, a Rust reimplementation of Flash player, which seems really cool.

@npub188q…3jlx I'm pretty sure if there's a matching GTK stylesheet in the same remote as your app, it'll install and use it automatically; at least, that used to be the case.
For Libadwaita apps, developers using Libadwaita have explicitly chosen for their apps to use the stylesheet that's built into Libadwaita itself. Manually exporting debug variables probably won't work for future versions of Libadwaita, because this is already being abused by distros today, resulting in broken apps. :(

Does anyone have experience with the Mastodon API and want to answer what I hope is a pretty straightforward question?
I'm using the status context API to grab replies to a status (to display as comments on my website!). However, it appears to be limiting the number of statuses returned. According to the docs, I expected a Link header in the response to fetch more statuses, but I'm not getting that header.
Am I missing something? Is there a different endpoint I should be hitting?
