Well, the “forever” part was tricky because it might break due to OS upgrades or computer architecture/chip changes.
But making a one-time purchase and using software 5 or 10 years was not unheard of.
I think I paid $500 for Photoshop and it came out to under $9 per month if I do the math right… that’s for 10 years of use.
If it’s still $20 per month for a subscription and you do 10 years that’s $2,400.

Ten years ago when I was building electric vehicles with my friends I always hated getting my hands all greasy and dirty.
Five years ago talking to friends of mine who were into gardening and plants I mentioned how I always hated getting soil and dirt all over my hands.
Nowadays when I’m in the kitchen making dough, mixing batter, whipping up icing, I don’t mind getting my hands dirty at all.
It’s just a different kind of “dirt” that I like.

I hate OpenAI but I had to use Whisper to help someone make accessible content. I hate that I had to use Whisper to do it because it comes from OpenAI.
But I don't know of any other way to get a text transcription from a media file that is free/open. (Besides doing it manually.)
I tell myself because it's for education and accessibility it's okay, but I still don't like it.

I watched a lot of YouTube videos about keyboards, some of those people are just... they're entire channel is keyboards!
How many keyboards do you need? You can only use one or two at a time normally. Some dude had a closet full of them.
Because like, it's their job... they buy/build keyboards and make videos and make money and that's their whole deal.
Which sort of annoys me.
So many damn keyboards! Maybe they should sell or give some away.

I also have a Stream Deck, and honestly I'd rather get another one or the XL one than shell out $200+ USD for a special keyboard.
I also use the same keyboard on the three different computers I regularly use, so have a different weird one on just one of them might be difficult.
(But if I build my own long macropad I could easily make more of them for cheap.)

All these keyboards that people build are these minimal things, and I want a maximal thing.
An extended keyboard has 104 keys, I want 124 or 144... Yeah, I like a lot of keys! I have macros and other stuff I want to do.
I know there's this who "layers" things for keyboards but I'm not a fan of that.
I might revise my project of a macro keyboard that is the same length of my extended keyboard and sits right behind it.

I know a guy who used to be a conservative, until he went to college. It wasn't "woke professors" that change him to a liberal, it was being in an actual city instead of the small town he grew up in.

A family member of mine made a joke about trans people and I shut it down so fast I think they are still reeling a day later.

They tried to defend it with "Oh, it's just us, we're cool" and I called bullshit on that too.

I started biking to work in August and it's now the end of November and I've done it 50 times in those 4 months.
That's 50 days I rode a bike instead of driving a car... about 650 miles by bike instead of car.

I took my daughter to buy a car today. The dealership could not run credit report due to AWS outage. She called the bank, they could not approve a large transaction because of the AWS outage. We went to the DMV, they were able to get her a replacement car title, but also mentioned some systems were down. Back to the dealership where they could not do the credit application to buy the car.

I tend to talk to kids like they are regular human people. A small child said to me "You're phone is little." and I replied:

I stopped at the grocery store on the way to work... another thing I thought I would never do on a bike.
Loaded the panniers up so they could barely close. (I meant to put the milk crate on the rack but I forgot.)
There's actually case of seltzer in one of the bags. I would have got more chips but I was afraid of them being crushed.
I basically got everything I'd get on a normal Aldi "car" run except for more chips.

I should be clear, I didn’t run out and buy an ebike. @npub1u0t…f49n loaned me his and I’ve been riding it for a month. I also spent that month doing research, watching every review video, going through forums, etc. and visiting a shop.
One of my biggest fears is that my body won’t keep up with the riding I want to do as I age, and an ebike will keep me riding.
Also, I started riding to work, and I love it! And want to keep doing it. So yeah, went crazy and decided to get an ebike.

Well, I bought a bike. I also realized I don’t think I ever bought a bike for myself before! Most of my bikes were gifts, or built from random parts I’d bought, or pieced together from the dumpster. So this is sort of exciting! And after today’s ride I think an ebike is perfect for me. It’s not easy to ride with people 15+ years younger than be, and with occasional knee & hip pain, pedal assist will save my ass.

I talked to another neighbor, one of the serious rode bike people and showed him the ebike I've been riding and he said (meekly) "Is an ebike cheating?" and I said "Well, who am I cheating? Am I competing with someone?"
"Actually, you know who I'm cheating? The automotive industry! And honestly, doesn't that make me a champion?"

So, the "cheating" part. I started riding last year for a few reasons.
- To get exercise (physical health)
- To get outside more (metal health)
And I occasionally bike instead of using a car. (I'd like to do that more if possible.)
It seems possible to use an ebike and not consider it cheating. Cheating sounds weird, but like if my goal was to cycle for fitness opting out of pedaling with all my might or getting assist can feeling like cheating.

I found an even faster way to make it so people do not talk to me when I answer the phone. I just say:
"Thank you for calling Pete. How may Pete assist you today?"
And I usually can't even get the whole thing out before they hang up.
The old version of my script would often go 10 to 15 seconds before they hung up, now we're down to 5 to 10 seconds!

We have a cooler we plug in to keep it cold and we unplug it like two hours before the event so it's soft enough to scoop. The cooler holds four 5 gallon containers. (One option is always dairy-free.)
The ice cream is donated from Joy Social, our local kick-ass ice cream shop.

Our neighborhood association runs the whole thing, I just volunteer to do the scooping. I've got it easy except for the massive arm workout when the ice cream is too frozen!

We were talking about software at work and I said "If you hate something, see if you can disable it" and honestly that could be good advice for anything.
