"The X-Files" had an ultra-competent female character in the form of no-nonsense Dana Scully and a) she was almost always wrong about the plot of each episode, b) she was still routinely used for fan service, and c) she eventually got offloaded into a "mom" role secondary to the replacement characters.
I won't even complain about her running around in dark forests in high heels because Gillian Anderson actually did that, which takes amazing skill.

Part of what annoyed me about the "Supergirl" TV show is that to make Kara more "relatable" and to balance out her supernatural strength -- stronger even than Superman! -- she was saddled with being a stereotypical rom-com character the rest of the time, the Nice Girl coffee-fetching office assistant who only wants what's best for everyone.
Which is not exactly her characterization in the comics.

One of the things I've realized over the years is that people react poorly to less-than-idealized portrayals of women, even when they profess to want strong, complex characters.
And it annoys me because are women people or not? We shouldn't always have to be perfect, and "perfect" often requires a mode of femininity that is non-threatening to men and inherently self-subordinating. I hate it.
I grew up desperate for female characters who were the equal of men in every way.

A recurring thought I've had since I was a teenager: most adults are emotionally children and thus useless / unavailable when you need to talk about Real Shit.
It's not even that adults coddle you when you're young, although that's the justification they use after the fact.
So many of them are just not mature enough to engage with serious topics, even when it obviously hurts them and their relationships.

Seriously, the fundamental problem with the Democratic Party is this dynamic where as soon as Republicans attack them for supporting a marginalized community, ANY marginalized community, Democrats withdraw all support and pretend that group doesn't exist.
And if that doesn't work, they adopt Republican talking points and pivot to attacking that group themselves. Which obviously doesn't help as it shows fear and vulnerability. The Republicans just amp up their attacks even more.
