fan of both shows and excited to see where this experiment takes you guys. Wonder what benefits could be leveraged as perks for subscribers
Another down the road possibility is a white label app for users of your instance @npub142g…kmy5 has done wonderfully providing affordable services on that front

there’s been no tooling improvements to my knowledge that would improve things for Black and Brown users. I can be fair and say the noise (that I’ve noticed) has quieted or shifted. It’s not as many people telling others how to use their own accounts.
There’s still the weird religious folk that think Mastodon is the best thing since sliced bread and get upset that others don’t view it similarly.
The Fediverse is largely an echo chamber, you’re right about that. Dissent and disagreement are frowned upon and looked at as creating disharmony. There’s no fix for that outside of education and the Fediverse growing exponentially
To help make things better: I’d suggest always advocating for better tooling, encouraging donations to admins and devs, being honest about the shortcomings of the space and not operating from a space of cope. Find well moderated instances that acknowledge hardships and Black and Brown folk, follow those people and encourage people in your life to join those spaces.

If anyone knows of people/groups that actually care about people, getting people off of #BigSocial, advancing the Open Social Web and making the spaces more accessible, safe and user-friendly let me know. Just without the weird ideology, religion and protocol wars.

You’d think people would want to work together to get people off of #BigSocial yet people want to be weird & engage in protocol wars. That lets me know it’s not truly about the public benefit #atproto #activitypub #opensocialweb

2025-08-25 01:51:25 UTC

I want to see #Fediverse embrace sustainability beyond “small instances” I want to see small businesses, creators, devs, writers etc be able to make money. I see no reason to shy away from ads and subscriptions. Ads should be done respectfully- follow the magazine model and only be connected to a specific service. For example, clients should be able to show ads in a tasteful manner and if that bothers people they can just use a different client.
I’d much rather see people’s dollars going to spaces like these as opposed to Musk and Zucks businesses.
Idk what the ethical alternative to Twitter Blue looks like but I’d much rather see money going to the Mastodon team

I can believe it after nearly 20 years of social media. Plus the polarisation of politics but I would assume there’s not people shouting in others faces and calling them all sorts of derogatory names?

2025-06-21 14:56:12 UTC

One thing I miss on social media is quality content and conversations. Where people would have civil discussions even in disagreements and point to reputable sources instead of “trust me bro” “ do your own research (aka YouTube). I’m sick of the purity tests where people generally on the same sides end up fighting because 1-3 differences. There needs to be a network and platform that emphasises this.

I’m curious. This place has a very vocal anti-capitalist community, anytime moneys come up people shout about donations. When it comes to consent and Trust & Safety I’ve seen many people attack devs. Yet, when #Mastodon was asking for donations to fund a position it was largely crickets. #IFTAS has done great work and set out to be a great benefit to the #fediverse and #OpenSocialWeb yet they’re struggling to keep the lights on. How can that be? So many of you are always talking about donations so why are projects underfunded and servers shutting down due to lack of funding?
Where are you passionate and vocal lot? https://wedistribute.org/2025/02/iftas-funding-crisis/

I wouldn’t say that at all, you know how many bridges are used in tech in general? That has nothing to do with decentralisation. Plus the definition of decentralization changes based on whom you ask and what agendas they have

2024-12-14 21:19:18 UTC

What I’m curious and disappointed about is the lack of the conversation regarding decentralisation when it’s #ActivityPub compared to #Nostr the #Fediverse powerbrokers always dismiss it by bringing up a part of its culture but never want to discuss the technical aspects

I don’t believe you engage in good faith. You have your opinion which as others have pointed out in terms of decentralisation is very flawed, you don’t budge. I ask how is it practically different than Musk buying the two instances by Mastodon nonprofit which make up 30% of the MAU. People notoriously don’t like change, there’s no easy way for them to keep their content, their social graphs would be severely impacted. No it wouldn’t shut down the fedi but it would be catastrophic

Fate of the universe on the line, How would you guys define decentralised? How would you define federated ?
#Askfedi #Fediverse #Mastodon #ActivityPub

2024-11-21 03:11:02 UTC

When #BlackTwitter tried to migrate to #Mastodon they were harassed and made to feel unwelcome. Some of you even suggested digital segregation as if that’s a beneficial response as opposed to doing the work to clean up this space. Black & Brown folks are enjoying #Bluesky & feel empowered yet many of you want to crap on that. There was nothing but contempt and criticism for those still on #X #Twitter. So, staying on Twitter problematic, going to Bluesky problematic. Yet, unless they assimilate and capitulate Black and Brown folks weren’t welcome #Fediverse
I can tell you that’s not a good look for any of you at all. This place isn’t as ethical nor as welcoming as advertised.

2024-10-30 04:26:33 UTC

going to the instance disregards users consent, not sure if you’re trolling by asking that. Currently consent is respect in the sense that admins can block the bridge and also that users opt-in to the bridge. Not sure how your way respects users consent and address the needs as very strongly expressed in the GitHub issue

2024-10-30 04:23:02 UTC

- reply

This I can get behind. I do agree things should be flexible and adaptive to all sorts of users needs. Apologies for the hostility, but I was there when on GitHub and Fedi how nasty and hostile people were towards Ryan. He took it like a champ but to me it was unacceptable and his mistreatment is something others have experienced on fedi. So, having an open discussion on making changes so things could be more convenient for you with the risk of them being harmful to Ryan doesn’t seem right.
Erin also wrote these two https://erinkissane.com/blue-skies-over-mastodon

2024-10-30 03:46:28 UTC

- reply

Opt-in was initially discussed and there were very vocal people that were against it including on Bluesky but nowhere near on like in Mastodon. Ryan respected peoples wishes and made it opt-in as that gives people actual consent. Not sure why we need to go in circles especially for your convenience. You can juggle multiple accounts, there are clients such as OpenVibe and SoraSns that support Bluesky and Mastodon accounts. That will allow you to manage your account from a single app, it’s not a perfect solution but better than making changes people fought for to appease your desires.

2024-10-30 03:42:17 UTC

- reply

it doesn’t suck if it comes across as one thing. It’s the dominant software running on servers, the two instances owned by the nonprofit makes up 30% of the entire fedi. So no it’s very reasonable people see it as one thing and when behaviour is similar irrespective of what server people are on that’s how it will be viewed

2024-10-30 03:23:33 UTC

- reply

your comments are dismissive. You clearly saw people were uncomfortable and upset yet you push forward for the own specific needs. There were people on Bluesky that didn’t want the bridge either as they don’t like the mastodon culture. Opt-in is respectful of consent not sure why you’re keen on going against that. If you care so much you can juggle multiple accounts on both platforms and or try to convince people to bridge their accounts

2024-10-26 11:11:34 UTC

you state this as if mastodon is much better. It’s federated not decentralised. It has a monopoly on the software implementations. The overall Fediverse user base 30% are on the mastodon servers ran by the mastodon nonprofit. It doesn’t offer data nor account portability nor actual ownership unless a user self-hosts. Plenty of servers have shutdown with no warning and left users SOL. The servers all handle everything and are under the ownership of a single person.

2024-09-21 20:21:21 UTC

Damn it, #Mastodon subculture has a crap reputation and it’s honestly mostly deserved. The HOA nickname tracks.
I just can’t figure the space out. There’s anger that people are using #bluesky and #Nostr , there’s a strong hostility toward content creators and influencers. They call people too stupid for calling #Fediverse & Mastodon too confusing. People attack and criticise those that remain on Big Social. A popular minority ran instance was shutdown due to the insane harassment, devs that do anything the people don’t like are relentlessly viscously attacked. Black and Brown people were told to CW their lives racist experiences and when sharing about their #fedi harassment they’re told to digitally segregate and that it can’t be true as others haven’t seen it nor experienced it.
Yet, Mastodon is supposedly the nicest of social networks, that’s as big as lie any Trump told this week.
I honestly, don’t want any Black and Brown people to come here, not yet anyways

2024-09-19 22:54:06 UTC

I’d like to know your thoughts. Do answer honestly and present factual information.
What reasons do potential users have for coming to the #fediverse #mastodon ?
Keep in mind we aren’t only discussing white users but people from all kinds of backgrounds and cultures. People that have strong reasons to remain on Big Social

2024-09-18 22:01:12 UTC

Many of you think the #Fediverse is the best online social experience ever and that’s your right. I don’t agree particularly when it comes to Mastodon. Black and Brown folks have been chased out of this space, one of the largest minority ran instances essentially forced to shut down and much more. Then you get white folks in peoples mentions telling Black and Brown folks to digitally segregate themselves as if that’s an acceptable response.

I see people celebrating #Telegram founder Pavel Durov. Some have said do #Elon and #Zuckerberg next. That is not the kind of society we should want nor be pushing for. That would also mean instance admins are directly responsible for the actions of people on their servers including legally outside of what is standard. To some degree of course there are legal obligations but we shouldn’t be treating hosts the same as those committing the illegal acts. There should be logical and reasonable accountability on hosts & providers. #legal #law

I think outside of the implementer the idea is a good one. We have been running a test instance that is in allow list mode. The plan is to entice those on Big Social to give fedi a try. The Fedi has a lot of evangelicals and a terrible mastodon subculture especially as it relates to anti-blackness, Bluesky, bridgy fed , Threads and AI. We set it up using those federating with Threads as the framework. Many people coming over are used to the town square vibe and would rather give them that experience without them being harassed or seeing others being harassed for different opinions
