Mária Telkes died #OTD in 1980. She was a Hungarian-American biophysicist, engineer, & inventor who worked on solar energy technologies.
During World War II, she developed a solar water distillation device, deployed at the end of the war, which saved the lives of downed airmen and torpedoed sailors. In the 1940s she and architect Eleanor Raymond created one of the first solar-heated houses, Dover Sun House, by storing energy each day.

Danish noblewoman & horticulturalist Sophia Brahe was born #OTD in 1559 (or 22 September 1556).
She played an essential role in assisting her brother, Tycho Brahe, with his astronomical observations. She worked alongside him at the Uraniborg observatory on the island of Hven, where they made some of the most precise measurements of planetary positions before the invention of the telescope. was deeply interested in horticulture, alchemy, & medicine.

Belgian lawyer and bibliographer Paul Otlet was born #OTD in 1868.
He developed the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) system, an innovative and highly detailed method for cataloging information. Otlet envisioned a global network of information that could be accessed remotely, which he described in his writings as a "réseau" or network of knowledge.

English engineer and writer on music George Grove was born #OTD in 1820.
He is best known as the founding editor of Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians. He stated, in the prospectus of the dictionary, in March 1874, that "The want of English works on the history, theory, or practice of Music, or the biographies of musicians accessible to the non-professional reader, has long been a subject of remark."
