I am actively lobbying parliament. Unfortunately my good contact there is now part of the committee of the hearings about covid. Have to wait for that to end first.
He is part of the coalition and he said he would be the perfect member of @npub1msh…2nlu he once replied to me on stage: does not own a car, no intention to.
But the legislation will be tricky. Because exactly what causes a problem in Amsterdam - no discipline and criteria for taxi drivers - is exactly what is the solution elsewhere in the country: those sweet volunteer/underpaid taxi drivers in the countryside who drive taxis to bring special needs kids to their specialised schools in the morning. Do something else during the day and drive them home during rush hour in the evening. With stressed parents eager to complain...
Some kind of complicated, perhaps incoherent, legislation is needed. Which might not survive a legal challenge by companies like Uber...

Please explain this to a person like me who last took a taxi years ago, last ordered take out during the pandemic (a bicyclist delivered it) and who is a big fan of public transport, bicycling, and renting vehicles.
To me it sounds great to make these services more expensive, it will benefit the alternatives. But I could be wrong.

The trams in Amsterdam were running fine after the freezing nights thanks to an employee initiative called 'Night Riders'.
During the night they would ride trams to keep the overhead lines ice free. They came up with this solution after a similar cold situation years earlier.
It worked and they were proud. With the compliments to them from Melanie the city elder on LinkedIn. And many inhabitants.

What certainly does not help is the inconsistency in policy caused by the Individual Vehicle Approval for the American cars that we want to keep out.
"Why are our cars not allowed in while they are already driving around for years on European roads?" the Americans might ask.
I have no answer to that. And I don't see those cars already in not taken off the road either.

2025-12-04 21:31:20 UTC

https://audiovisual.ec.europa.eu/en/media/video/I-276918 A journalist asked in September about the American cars in the EU.
00:00:17.700 --> 00:00:25.020
Does that mean that the EU is preparing to accept a blanket, basically acceptance of all US car standards
00:01:59.470 --> 00:02:04.629
But certainly I can say for the camera for you and for everyone else, that we're not going to,
you know, reduce any of our own standards that we've built up over many decades here in the EU. I hope that's sufficiently clear.

Could you set up some crowdfunding of some kind? Or does that distract people from longterm subscriptions?
Upgrading my subscription on a monthly basis is a bit overblown in this context. Or should I just upgrade from Bicycle (€30/y) to Tram (€11,5/m) on Patreon for a month and then downgrade?

Journalist (in the 1st fragment) also tried such a car and explains 'You are a danger for others on the road, you are mostly busy trying not to hit something, it constantly beeps'.
In the 2nd fragment some figures. Since 2010 36% road casualties in the EU and an increase of 30% in the US.
Conclusion after driving a Dodge: "we were the most hated on the road."

This reminds me of my (only) visit to a 'big box' store near Amsterdam this year.
I rented a car to get mousetraps because they were sold out in all local shops. It would be 20 minutes by bike and it was half an hour before closing time.
The parking lot is on the ground floor, the box is build on top of it. Solid concrete structures, it will probably stay there for many decades.
I didn't stay long because the rented car is cheaper if you return it quickly.

New mobility policy in the Netherlands. Local situations are no longer calculated with 'hours lost in traffic' but instead with an index of reachability of 8 key destinations (work, school, hospital, supermarket, etc.) using the 5 modalities: car, bike, bike+public transport, just public transport, and by foot.

Tree roots are pushing up bicycle lanes in Amsterdam (also elsewhere?).
Please think with me. Could it be a solution to lay an iron mat over the tree roots composed of a grid filled with short vertical bamboo stems, which are then periodically horizontally cut?
The stems are pierced with iron wire to prevent them from sinking down were there are no roots.
Bicyclists then always have a perfectly level surface to drive on. Just a short bump, but very gradual. The tree can grow and gets rain.

In Amsterdam I would feel entitled to just take over the road and bike in the middle of it. Don't expect much anger from the motorists because they can see there is no alternative. Would not be fined I am sure, for the same reason. Luckily the bike lanes are cleaned and I never felt the need for such a stunt. Probably the city understands what a mess it would be if bicyclists are all deprived of their bike lane and start using the main road.

You should be on CBC with this. I submitted it as a 'news tip' at https://www.cbc.ca/news/email-cbc-contact-phone-tips-news-story-1.6466536 and locals could do the same.

Yikes, more bicycling streets? Always a bad idea to have cars share infrastructure with bikes. Even if the cars are pulled by donkeys or pushed manually. Still not good. The city writes that the volume of bicyclists during rush hour is just too big. Better have the cars share space with the tram.

For those who became curious. From the first pdf linked from https://www.amsterdam.nl/projecten/sarphatistraat/ page 13-15. Compare with the streetview of this substandard, aged end of a bicycling artery https://maps.app.goo.gl/gPCBhJyY9Vb4gKTXA

@npub1z7x…q5jf For international entertainment. This message from Amsterdam.
Below this image the city writes “we are going to make more space for bicyclists, accessible public transport, pedestrians and green”
The image is not an artist impression of what it will become, but the current situation…

“I have long been struck,” he writes, “by the ingenuity and thoroughness with which wheeled traffic was excluded” from cities such as Rome and Pompeii.
“The entire system of mainly one-way streets, blocked streets, closed streets ... show that traffic flow was not unrestricted,”
These carriages, driven poorly, could also be deadly, another reason for restricting their passage.

I expect the latter. Taxi drivers can pretend to drive around with customers (I see a lot of them driving around empty) and at the end of the day deposit cash at the bank pretending the cash is from clients. While in fact it is drugs money coming from a gigantic pile of garbage bags with ‘useless' cash.
Also you can see tourists getting in a taxi for just a few hundred meters. They bought a little envelope or some pills while bureaucratically they paid for a ride!

After receiving more ad hominem insults from Amsterdam’s most vocal taxidriver (because I said something in the newspaper) I was wondering, have we already seen a video from @npub1z7x…q5jf about taxis? In what way do they contribute to a city? I think of Amsterdam, which is a magnet for taxis, one for every 351 inhabitants! https://www.ilent.nl/onderwerpen/taxiontwikkelingen-en-trends/marktbeeld In a city where you can cross the old centre by foot in 30 minutes. Amsterdam can't limit them without better national legislation.

better yet, “the fire department does not allow more cars on this important street” is a message I would like to see on busy roads. With some traffic filter to decrease the capacity of the road, pushing traffic jams back to neighbourhoods. So people can decide: to leave this mess I can just take a bike to that important road and ride together with others. Like... a bus?
