Just seen someone saying they support bans on trans healthcare for under 18s because “let kids be kids”.
By the time I hit puberty, I had KNOWN for a decade.
I also knew that telling anyone would be profoundly dangerous.
So I hid who I was and, am almost grateful that the neurodivergence gave the other kids something else to latch on to. They were so busy calling me a “mong” that they didn’t notice I was trans.
Because that might have got me murdered.
Or pushed me into a position where I felt I had no options other than the same end result.
So I hid it.
And I hid it really well.
And one of the things that happens when a 5 year old child is terrified of their parents, or their families, or the school bullies finding out who they really are is that they end up traumatised.
A 5 year old child. Traumatised and ashamed.
Ashamed because adults openly talked about them.
Or people like them.
And what they said was horrific. What they said made it very clear that they would regard their own kids as subhuman monsters if they ever found out.
So we hid. And an important part of ourselves died in childhood. A light that should have shone, went out.
I’ve tried my best to rekindle it.
I’ve managed somewhat but it will never be right. Not really. I’ve made peace with that.
“Let kids be kids”. Trans kids like me never got to be.
Because of people who say things like that.

Being a member of the Cult of Amphetamine is all consuming in a way that even transition isn’t.
The trans thing these days is easy. You take HRT and then forget about it (we outsource “constantly being Normal about trans women” to Joanne Rowling and Shut Up Wesley Streeting).
But this … the thing is you have the whole Flowers for Agernon daily speed run (pun possibly intended). You count your hours and plan your day around the likely time, plus or minus a bit, when you will suddenly turn from being a functional adult into an overstimulated bag of cats.
A true revolution would be giving us all day relief. You can’t do that with stimulants though.
And as a result, you kinda end up leaning into the whole “medically sanctioned speed addict” thing, especially as irreverent humour is already something having ADHD tends to prime you for.

Imagine being one of those academics who realised in the 80s, or even earlier, that software development needed to be an engineering discipline.
And then you watch as the tail end of Gen X and the early Millennials teach themselves to code and some of them you can convince of your worldview.
But they end up working not as engineers or scientists, but as artisans in an industry that comes to depend on them working as artisans.
And then gets greedy.
And then decided it needed a million or more artisans.
And there just weren’t.
And because nobody turned it into an actual engineering discipline you then got an industry of senior artisans with a million idiots working under them
And now the idiots are being replaced with idiot machines that somehow, despite being computers, forgot how to even do arithmetic.
And then the ageing artisans are replaced by the idiot machines redigesting their own multiply ruminated “stack overflow from
2015 in a blender” over and over and over until it’s just whatever the silicon equivalent of drool is.
Imagine being one of the people who tried to prevent this and nobody listened to you.
It must be infuriating.

In his culturally significant work of 1995, Mr Cocker gives an allegedly autobiographical account of a night spent in a field in the southern English county of Hampshire. The account is based on a claim, supposedly overheard, that someone makes detailing their abundant possession of a number of substances which probably include a mixture persil and chalk dust.
These, however, would generally be regarded as excipients, resold considerably above their retail value. The significant active ingredients of the mixture would be 3,4 methelyne dioxy N-methyl dextro alpha metyhl phenethylamine (“Molly”) and its base compound, dextro alpha methyl phenethylamine (“Benny”)
These are both monoamine neurotransmitter releasing agents and monoamine neurotransmitter reuptake inhibitors, with significant efficacy on the monoamines, dopamine and noradrenaline.
Mr Cocker elaborates by noting that in the middle of the night, the experience of consuming inadvisable amounts of these substances is an agreeable one. Their relatively short period of efficacy, however, results in levels of the two aforementioned monoamine neurotransmitters becoming clinically depleted at around 6am.
In a phone call to his mother, perhaps from a BT phone booth as this story occurs just before the wide scale adoption of cellular telephones and certainly ones that would still have significant charge at this point, the storyteller laments to his mother a “horrible feeling” which “grows and grows” and leads him to deduce the absence of an “important part” of his brain.
That Mr Cocker describes monoamine insufficiency as a “horrible feeling” leads your author to regret her lack of mastery of the tiny violin as she, perhaps understandably but uncharitably contributes, “welcome to my normal life, you daft bastard. Sucks, doesn’t it?”

A number of members of the government, who themselves had voted for the 2004 law that requires me to live as female, agreed with it, presumably because they have some sort of memory lapse.

I want to explain a few things and then it might be clearer why UK trans people are upset.
In 2001 I married my wife, Sylvia.
In 2005 I started medical transition. For the state to recognise this I had to submit to standards of "care" which were humiliating, degrading and which placed me at risk of violence.
But I did it "by the book"
As I did it "by the book", the NHS agreed to reregister me as female, which makes sense because my anatomy now is.
In 2007 I had sex reassignment surgery. This had to be signed off by two mental health professionals, "by the book", and it was.
In 2008 I applied for gender recognition. This involved signing a statutory obligation, stating that I promised, BY LAW, to live fully as female for the rest of my life. As this was done, "by the book", the government promised that it would treat me as such.
Its first act as treating me as female was to annul our marriage because it was a same sex marriage and those were not allowed.
The state then reissued my birth certificate, correcting the "mistake" it had originally made when it recorded me as male, "by the book".
In 2009 Sylvia and I married for the second time, in a same sex civil partnership, which was done "by the book", because the state regarded me as female and I was bound by law to be female.
In 2013 we married again, because the state decided that same sex marriage was in fact allowed after all. This was done, "by the book". Despite having been married for 12 years, we had to submit ourselves to individual questioning to prove our relationship was genuine, "by the book".
In April of 2025 the state turned round and told me that I had been mistaken. That it never regarded me as female. That I was male the whole time. That the marriage it annulled because it was a same sex marriage was never a same sex marriage (but it stays annulled). That the civil partnership in 2009 never really happened because "opposite sex" civil partnerships were not allowed in 2009.
And that the legal obligation I have to live as female for the rest of my life, which I signed and gave up my marriage for, is still in effect but also if I keep following it, I am breaking the law and subject to arrest. As it's still valid, presumably if I don't keep following it, I am also breaking the law and subject to arrest.
The law of the land simultaneously requires me to be both a man and a woman and if I do either then I am breaking the law and subject to arrest.
At every stage I did what the state asked me to, even though it was humiliating, degrading and cruel.
And it kept moving the goalposts, and reneging on the agreements it made, whilst continuing to hold me to them even when they are now mutually contradictory.
Apparently this is "all my fault" and I should have known that this would be the consequences of my actions when I started medical transition 2 decades ago.
Perhaps you can now appreciate why we are upset?

They have helped more than I could have imagined possible.
I had not known that people could be like that (and it’s now becoming like THIS because I’m feeling it start to hit)
But I guess it’s like if one transitioned, but at the end of the day had to revert to what you were before. That reversion is tough.

At some point in the last 4 months since starting ADHD meds the state I regard as normal has swapped over.
I’m currently in the post medicated state and I feel like some confused scared shadow of a person terrified of her own emotions which she doesn’t understand and bemused by the world.
This used to be who I was all the time.
That’s a lot to come to terms with.

Problem with streaming series is they don’t have enough material to fill the seasons they’re given so instead of filler episodes we’re moving to entire filler seasons.

This is usually what you want, which is why cameras do it. If you do not want this, dial in some exposure compensation. Dunno about android but in iOS you do it by swiping up or down after doing long press for focus and exposure lock.

Uploading them to fedi has compressed the hell out of them. I took a load more (all raw mode) too, and on the big monitor the difference is very clear.
The phone is good, but it’s good for a phone. It can’t compete with big glass in front of a big sensor.

As a side project they had us design an integrated RISC and graphics system for a handheld gaming successor to the Gameboy. We got some local games devs you’ve definitely heard of, but who I’m not going to name, to knock up a few 3D demo proof of concept games. There was a very fun racing game for example.
This was showed to the CEO of Nintendo who, as we were told, was impressed, and asked how we were doing the hardware acceleration for the 3D graphics because it was better than their N64 titles.
He was then told it was being done entirely in software on this little 32 bit chip that was barely more powerful than a 486 (although the 486, of course, ran Doom just fine).
Apparently he did not take this well, and as we thought at the time, buried the project.
Then suddenly, a couple of years later, the GBA launched, but pretty much only with 2D sprite based stuff. We knew what it was capable of, but it seems there was still a determination to not have it show up their consoles.

The original BBC Micro was a 32k 6502 based thing built like a tank so that school kids couldn’t break it. Its thing was that it was very easy to plug home made hardware in. It’s kinda the original inspiration for the Raspberry Pi.
Every school had one, or a few if they were well funded, but they were rare outside that environment where most people either got a Spectrum or C64. The BBC Micro, beyond schools, was bought by a VERY specific section of the British middle class.
This whole thing repeated in the late 80s, with the Amiga, Atari ST and Archimedes playing the roles or the C64, Spectrum and BBC Micro respectively.

The thing is, he actually did a half decent job.
It’s just that nobody wanted a Z80 based BBC Micro clone, and certainly not when the 8 bit era was drawing to a close.

It appears that there may be an issue with Google Chrome not starting for some users of Mac OS Sequoia.
I have found a workaround. In the Finder, open the Applications folder, locate Chrome, drag it to the bin, then empty the bin.

Saw someone elsewhere assert that Britain is “one of the least corrupt countries in the world”, and couldn’t let that go unchallenged, so here’s what I said:
Only because of this one weird loophole, which I will explain below:
For the last decade, the previous government has been awarding public contracts for infrastructure, etc, to what are essentially shell companies run by their mates. These companies then do the bare minimum for as long as possible, which if you drive round the UK, is why you see all those road “improvement” works which do nothing and take forever and never seem to have anyone working. It took two years to replace a roundabout with a set of traffic lights near my apartment, for example. Other examples: large amounts of “PPE equipment” during Covid which turned out to be useless junk.
Obviously they aren’t actually spending anything but a trivial amount going through the motions, so what happens to the rest of the money, which let’s remember, was raised by taxes.
Well, it gets donated back to the ruling party as “political donations”, and then if the pretend contractor does a good enough job of this, they get an knighthood, or even a seat in the House of Lords for “services rendered”.
Now you might think that this sounds corrupt, and you would be right. It sounds deeply corrupt, but apparently it’s not because a lot of the global agencies which work out corruption indices are based in, checks notes, London, and are probably in on the scam, and get to define what “corruption” means, and define it to mean, “not this”.
Et voila! You have a country with one of the biggest wealth gaps in Europe funnelling vast amounts of public money to populist spaffers in government, all legal, laundered and sanitised.
The whole of UK society is like this. It’s how it works, and once you see it you either join in, or walk away in disgust.
