3.46 million people subscribe to journalist/documentarian/creator Andrew Callaghan's YouTube series, Channel 5. Sophie Culpepper, a NiemanLab journalist, attended his "carnival" event to see what the fuss was about. Here's what she thought. We want to know, as social and video networks overtake TV as a news source, where do you get your news (choose as many as you like)?

Local journalism matters, example number one-billion (approximately). After a report by London Centric, an independent site founded by ex-Guardian journalist Jim Waterson, a billionaire landlord has shelved plans to carry out mass evictions across London. Here's more from London Centric on how their story made a difference.

U.S. Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer appeared on a panel together at the 62nd Munich Security Conference along with Matthew Whittaker, United States ambassador to NATO. They talked about complicated issues of foreign policy and geo-diplomacy for an hour or so and it was, at the time, seen as an uncontroversial, non-newsworthy conversation. Yet a few days later, the press was full of stories about their slip-ups and lack of knowledge. Emily Horne, a former National Security Council and State Department spokesperson, did a deep dive into what had happened. What she found? Stories from "pink slime" sites — local news publications that are largely funded by right-wing dark money groups — picked up and "laundered" into real news by POLITICO, The New York Times and more.

One of TV personality Dr. Phil’s maxims is that you should avoid debt at all costs. At the same time, his son Jay McGraw has been involved in the payday lending industry. @npub1qmg…s6k5 collaborated with Anchorage Daily News on a story about his role in CreditServe Inc., a consulting firm that worked with a company owned by a Native American tribe in Alaska that offered small dollar loans, with interest rates as high as 700%. CreditServe provides the infrastructure to market, underwrite and collect on loans while “the Tribe is merely a front” and shares in only a small percentage of the revenue, according to a suit filed by five borrowers. They claim that McGraw has collected hundreds of millions of dollars of consumer payments.

A pattern of practices, both deliberate and unintentional, has concealed the history of Massachusetts’ state institutions from the public, including institutional survivors and their family members. This is the finding of a newly released report from the Massachusetts Special Commission on State Institutions — a commission that was made up of majority disabled people, many with personal experience of having been institutionalized. We’ve read more about Joe Rogan in the last couple of weeks than we really wanted to — first, with the Menswear Guy’s story for Bloomberg on his influential physique, and now, with @npub1wkr…yvj6’s article on the dangers of the Roganified male mystique, and what to do about it. “That pipeline doesn’t stop because we roll our eyes at it. It stops when we block it with something real. The Roganification of masculinity is a symptom. The disease is deeper. But the cure won’t come from debunking or mocking. It will come from reclaiming the terrain of meaning. Of power. Of identity,” she writes. “The future of men is being whispered into a mic. What these men hear next — rage or renaissance — depends on what we build. And whether we build it fast enough.”

At a meeting of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), the U.S. counselor for economic and social affairs, Edward Heartney, touted President Donald Trump as a protector of Indigenous women. Heartney slipped out in the silence immediately after he spoke. Had he waited, he would have heard what sounded like a direct rebuff to his statement, though it was written in advance. “The U.S. has opened the coastal plain to oil and gas leasing, threatening our very survival,” said model and land protector Quannah ChasingHorse on behalf of the Gwich’in Steering Committee. “The Gwich’in have never given consent for development, and our right to self-determination is being violated by interests that view our lands as a commodity,” ChasingHorse continued. “I am outraged that decisions about my people’s future are being made without us at the table.”

Last December, Bashar al-Assad was toppled as leader of Syria by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and fled to Moscow. Syrians celebrated, but now, some are worried that life after Assad may be no better. damemagazine@newsie.social’s Ryan Biller talked to Syrians about their fears of religious extremism, foreign interference and misinformation. “Somewhat discreetly, I disclosed to [a Yazidi woman named] Gulizar that I was an American,” writes Biller. “To this, she smirked. ‘Oh, so you must feel the same way as me.’ ‘What do you mean?’ I asked. Gulizar reminded me that it wasn’t just her new government that people ought to fret over regarding the treatment of women and minorities. ‘I think you kind of have your own version of HTS in America,’ she laughed. ‘It is called Donald Trump.’”

The Chinese writer Fang Fang’s first novel was published in 1982 and for the best part of 40 years, she made her living as a writer, including winning national awards for her work. Then came COVID-19. Her public lockdown diary, “fengcheng riji,” published on her Weibo (microblog) account, became a phenomenon, and made her a target for criticism. She’s been called a liar and a traitor, reprints of her backlist of nearly 100 books have been halted, and her new work is effectively banned from publication in China. @npub1j6a…4lm2 reviews “Soft Burial,” her latest novel (translated by Michael Berry), and finds a story about trauma and survival. “I’ve chosen to forget, while you have chosen to leave a record. But once you record what happened, how will I ever be able to forget?” one character says to another. “Meanwhile the novel itself acts as a site, however small, however incomplete, for remembrance,” writes reviewer Madeleine Thien. Texas’s House Bill 3225 is aimed at municipal libraries, and bans anyone aged under 18 from accessing “sexually explicit materials,” without defining what that is, restricts their access to the library’s general collection, even for school assignments, and more. Author Chris Barton testified against this at the Texas legislature, and writes for @npub1xf8…0uw6 about the many problems with this bill. “If a few Texas parents don’t want their kids to have free and full access to our libraries, let those parents hold their own children’s hands, never allow them out of their sight, and never allow them to think for themselves. What happens when users of an app like Tinder and Hinge (two of many owned by Match Group) report that a date has sexually assaulted them? Absolutely nothing, according to an exhaustive new investigation by @npub1svp…js2d, @the19th@flipboard.com and The Guardian. Abusers have been allowed to stay on platforms, in direct contravention of Match Group’s official safety policy, and have gone on to carry out more assaults. “Since 2019, Match Group’s central database has recorded every user reported for rape and assault across its entire suite of apps; by 2022, the system, known as Sentinel, was collecting hundreds of troubling incidents every week, company insiders say.”

No humans were harmed in the making of the True Crime Case Files YouTube channel. Why? In an editorial for @npub199j…90r9, Kiden-Aloyse Smith discusses “Hood Feminism” by Mikki Kendall, and why its messaging around race and intersectionality is particularly resonant right now. “Despite Black folks making up 14% of the U.S. population, we make up 40% of missing-person cases for people under age 18,” she writes. “Black women’s and children’s cases are left untouched for decades — marked as runaways, marked as unworthy, marked as the ‘imperfect victim.’ When little Black girls go missing, it’s a deafening silence with a reminder that maybe if we were ‘good’ girls or white girls, we’d be found.”

Canada’s getting a fentanyl czar, and thank goodness for that — after all, who else will deal with the massive flood that enters the U.S. through its northern border. (Last year it was 43 pounds, less than the weight limit for a single suitcase on Air Canada.) For @npub1ccc…32l5, Dr. Steve Burgess (not a real doctor) ponders what kind of uniform such an official might wear (shiny buttons), and why the role of fentanyl czar is appealing. “A lot of people were interested in the job because it seemed it would mostly consist of sitting around, eating Canadian-style Cheezies, bingeing ‘Letterkenny’ and occasionally yelling out the window, ‘I better not see any fentanyl heading south! Don’t make me put on my shiny uniform and come out there!’” he writes.

Are the people being held at Guantanamo the “worst of the worst?” It’s hard to tell, since officials are not releasing details either about who they are, or what they’re supposed to have done. Luckily, @npub1qmg…s6k5 and Texas Tribune are on the case. So far, their reporters have spoken to the families of two Venezuelan detainees whose only crime is illegal entry, and one who picked up a charge during detention. Those being held have not been able to speak to their families, nor to attorneys. “Never before have people been taken from U.S. soil and sent to Guantanamo, and then denied access to lawyers and the outside world,” said Lee Gelernt, the lead attorney in the ACLU case. “It is difficult to think of anything so flagrantly at odds with the fundamental principles on which our country was built.”

HI @npub17ga…p6c7, are you already following these accounts from Press.coop? If so, you should be automatically moved over to following the Flipboard versions — let us know if you are having any difficulties with this. If you're not already following accounts, here's a full spreadsheet of everything we have federated.

When @npub1459…qahn, founder and CEO of hello.coop joined the fediverse, he couldn’t find the news he cared about. So he launched press.coop, and created accounts mirroring the X or RSS feeds of sites he or others from the community wanted to follow. Some accounts got thousands of followers. When our publishers joined the fediverse, Dick and team decided that these publisher-owned accounts might be a more direct way for people to connect with the publisher and their content. So over the next week nearly 100 press.coop accounts will be migrated to official publisher Flipboard.com accounts. If you’re already following a press.coop account, you’ll automatically follow the new one, and there’s no need to do anything. Here’s the full list:

Flipboard loves local news — journalists who live in the communities they serve hold truth to power; knowing what's going in your neighborhood, town, city, state or province helps you feel connected and informed. That's why our next federation wave is going to be for local. We have hundreds of local websites on Flipboard, and eventually, we'll federate them all, but since our approach to federation is slow and steady, we'd like to start with what the community here wants. So tell us: Which of these U.S. regions would you like to see in the fediverse? Tell us in the comments which city or town you're in, and your favorite paper. And don't worry Canada, we're coming for you next.

The Ethiopian prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, is building himself a palace as part of a grand 503-hectare complex that includes a hotel, accommodation for visiting dignitaries, and three artificial lakes. Some say it’s a vanity project; his spokesperson told @npub1umk…2hjm that this is a “simplistic narrative,” and that it is actually a “satellite city project” that aims to “transform the face and environs of Addis Ababa.” According to remarks made by Abiy, the bill for the complex could be U.S. $10 billion, more than half of the country’s annual budget.

Every kid we know is currently obsessed with narwhals (we blame the unicorns) but if they really want to know about these one-toothed sea creatures, they need to speak to Martin Nweeia. A dentist by day, he has taken more than 20 trips to the Arctic to log Indigenous knowledge about the tusk, discover what exactly it’s made of, and what it’s for. @npub1tgp…5gaf interviewed him.

After initial enthusiasm, cultivated meat has struggled to get off the ground, and it can be sold in stores in only one country: Singapore. @npub1qt7…dgeq visited the Little Red Dot to find out why the country is so gung-ho on alternative proteins, and the obstacles to it catching on everywhere.

Suzette Baker, from unincorporated Kingsland in Texas, is officially a “Champion of Writers.” She is the first recipient of the Authors Guild’s new award, which recognizes librarians fighting book bans. In 2022 she was fired from her job as a Llano County librarian after resisting orders to ban books. In response, library patrons sued the county to have books restored to shelves, and won. @npub1xf8…0uw6 spoke to Baker about books, censorship, and the support she’s had from fellow librarians.

America is just a few months out from what might be the most consequential presidential election in history. Allison Hantschel writes for @npub1vq8…m4d2 about the media’s obsession with polls and their limited usefulness. “Our presidential elections are determined by the electoral college, which means it doesn’t matter what people in general think. If it were, I’d be in line to visit the Al Gore Presidential Library right now,” she concludes.

Ukraine is one of few countries where the issue of firearms for citizens is not yet regulated by law. The team at @npub13nk…zpuw’s Counteroffensive have written about ongoing efforts to legislate around the ownership of guns, and the debate over whether Ukrainians would have been better able to resist the occupation with free access to weapons.

Brian Elmore is a border physician. He writes for @npub1xf8…0uw6 about what it’s like to witness firsthand the violence of Operation Lone Star. “America’s strategy to make the border as dangerous to cross as possible, has spawned increasingly macabre policies … These measures have created a growing public-health crisis along the border.”

Back in March, not long after the death of Nex Benedict, @npub1vq8…m4d2’s Catherine Caruso wrote about how schools became so dangerous for LGBTQ kids. The conclusion? Right-wing outlets are trying to start a moral panic; social media platforms have amplified this; and politicians have legislated to support it. “The real-word harm that has unfolded due to anti-LGBTQ bias and misinformation is immeasurable,” Caruso writes.
