Why is the OnePlus bootloader scanning subpartitions on userdata? Why does this crash fastboot mode? (Could this be exploited somehow?)

2026-04-21 18:13:02 UTC

- reply

For pmOS (both versions) we install into subpartitons (with a GPT) on the userdata Android partitions. We've been doing this for years, it works great.
The reason that it broke was because the bootloader appears to be scanning the GPT, and if a partition has a name that is > 24 char in length, it's impossible to enter fastboot. 25ch is way below the GPT spec limit. It can be recovered by clearing the userdata partition. I'll work on a fix in duranium to use shorter partition names. Fun times 🥳

I wonder if Valve will ever upstream the MFD/hwmon drivers for the Steam Deck...
The mainline kernel on this device is missing useful stuff like fan control 😒

Do you like graphic design, are not a coder, and want to contribute to #postmarketOS ?
We're missing a rad slideshow to inform and entertain folks while they wait for our OS installer app to finish, and we could use your help creating graphics/images for one! Otherwise this just looks... sad and boring 😂

A few folks have asked me why I decided nearly 2 years ago to leave a great job to work on pmOS full-time for little pay, etc, so I wrote some words about my experience and perspective on the whole matter: https://blog.craftyguy.net/why-i-quit/
It was a scary decision, but I still feel like I made the right choice. I hope me sharing this is useful for folks in a similar position :D

@npub188a…xt96 and I will be running a #postmarketOS table in a few days at #fossy2025 in Portland, OR.

Does anyone in the US want to donate (or sell to me for cheap) an Apple M1 or M2 macbook so I can:
- Improve the #postmarketOS port for this device
- Use it to speed up my pmOS development[1] because using qemu/kvm to test is soooo helpful for the work I do
😁
1) IIUC kvm works under linux on this, unlike on my existing qcom laptop that can't reach el2 without losing remoteprocs 🫠

omg I totally forgot to announce this when I merged it but...
#postmarketOS has a new installer for laptops and tablets! 🎉
You can find images at postmarketos.org/download. Currently only pre-built images exist for Lenovo X13s and Generic x86_64, but it's easy to enable building images for other devices if there's enough interest!
It uses os-installer[1] on GNOME desktop, and is intended to be booted from USB disk to install pmOS onto local storage 🔥

what are the workarounds and how do we use them?

2025-04-28 21:04:10 UTC

- reply

@npub12g8…fmlz has been investigating this for us and hasn't been able to find much beyond what he commented here. If this affects the matrix.org room, it's kinda weird you haven't heard of this 😉
We aren't super excited about having to recreate the room, especially if there's no assurance that this will actually fix/prevent it from happening again later. The synapse folks don't think it's a problem with synapse or homeserver configuration... What other options do we have?

2025-04-28 20:41:10 UTC

TIL that there's this major issue with the #matrix protocol where sometimes messages in rooms are just lost. Gone. Poof. We've been losing messages in the pmOS main channel for a few days now, it's pretty frustrating when trying to help folks.
They've apparently known about this for years yet there's no public info I can find about it. The only advice is to "recreate the room", which is quite disruptive when there are thousands of participants (and it'll happen again)

turns out it miiight be a new Mesa 25.0 bug, which means it will affect any #GTK4 (and other?) apps using #vulkan rendering on Adreno 6xx GPUs...
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/13012

2025-04-13 16:28:32 UTC

- reply

I found that disabling dmabuf gets gtk4 working again with the default vulkan renderer (using turnip, the adreno vk driver)
This is not an issue in the older Mesa 24.3.x in Alpine Linux when gtk4 apps run outside flatpak. Flatpaks are using Mesa 25.0.x.
I'm not sure if this is a regression in Mesa, in flatpak, and/or in gtk4. Vulkan tools seem to indicate that vk with dmabuf is functional in flatpaks...
Help debugging this further is appreciated!

I found a weird crash that seems to involve running #golang apps compiled for amd64 on an aarch64 system using #qemu.
It seems to be related to the Go GC, GOGC=off works. Go 1.20 also works.
The crash output from Go runtime is in this issue, but I've been able to reproduce this when building a very simple hello world app for amd64:
https://gitlab.com/postmarketOS/pmbootstrap/-/issues/2382
Both Go's runtime/GC and qemu are complicated things I suck at debugging 😞
Help me fediverse, you're my only hope.
