Mouse studies indicate that the dental-plaque-forming bacterium *Streptococcus mutans* can colonize the gut, where it produces a metabolite (imidazone proprionate) that can cross the blood-brain barrier and induce symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

Soil warming leads to release of stored carbon, and nitrogen enrichment leads to increased carbon storage. New research that looks at the combined effect of these factors finds an increase in respiratory loss of carbon from soils, but no change to the stock of soil carbon.
