We had exactly this dilemma in a company I worked for which had a ‘no defence work’ rule. We were asked to provide equipment for on-base schools. We decided that was OK, but not everyone was comfortable with the decision.

As Phil Moorhouse often complains, Labour are absolutely shit at publishing the good stuff they do. Does Labour HQ even have a Social Media team? Do they even have a Mastodon account? I never see anything reposted from any SM platform. There should be daily updates. One lesson they could learn from Trump!

Who could replace Reeves?
How about Chi Onwura? A chartered Engineer with an MBA, with experience in both private industry and at Ofcom (where I first encountered her, and realised quickly she has a brain sharper than my own).
She comes from Newcastle, so not London centric, and has a good reputation as a constituency MP.
So far her highest role was Shadow Minister for Science, Research and Innovation, but I think she is destined for much higher things.

The really dumb thing is that there are weasel words that work well. ‘Trained as a solicitor’ would garner almost as much respect, whilst being significantly more accurate.

I think there’s a difference between putting on the best spin and actually misrepresenting facts. ‘Experience with x’ when you were just helping your boss is one thing. ‘Being a banker’ when you were just answering the complaints line, or claiming to have a qualification you don’t have, is a rather less acceptable thing.

I’m told by a biochemist friend that the NIH was *the* international repository of genetic research data (not just for humans, but for many other lifeforms too). All those data are currently inaccessible. This is vandalism on a par with the burning of the library of Alexandria.

For those who don’t know, currency hedging is a service which (in its useful form) allows companies with a future liability in a foreign currency (for example to buy electronic components) to buy forward enough currency to meet their obligations. That fixes into their own currency the price they will have to pay, allowing them to plan their profit margin, transferring any risk that exchange rates will move against them. Or alternatively, to fix incoming payments, too.

A great read! The only sentence I disagree with is “In the financial economy, it is a zero-sum game, where the winner takes the losers’ money.” That’s not totally true. The financial economy has to make a profit, and it does so by extracting some of the profit from the real economy. It is in fact largely parasitical. Yes, some services such as insurance and currency hedging are worth paying for, but many are not, and in fact do great damage.

You see, impatience! Corbyn’s policies were outside the Overton Window. He wasn’t the ‘first step’, he was a wild leap into the unknown (at least that’s how the electorate saw it).
We may not like what Starmer is offering, but at least it’s to the left of the Tories, and will start to move the Overton Window leftwards again.
