A nithing pole (Old Norse: níðstang), sometimes normalized as nithstang or nidstang, was a pole used for cursing an enemy in Germanic pagan tradition (nīþ, nith).
A nithing pole consisted of a long, wooden pole with a recently cut horse head at the end, and at times with the skin of the horse laid over the pole. The nithing pole was directed towards the enemy and target of the curse. The curse could be carved in runes on the pole.

In 1929, during excavations of the site of the Roman temple of Nodens at Lydney Park, the archaeologist Sir Mortimer Wheeler discovered details of the curse. As Wheeler consulted with J. R. R. Tolkien on the name of the god invoked in the curse, the ring and curse may have inspired the One Ring in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

After its discovery in the 18th century, the ring became the property of the Chute family, whose country house was The Vyne, also in Hampshire, now a National Trust property. The ring went on display there in April 2013.

At least four chroniclers of the Hope Diamond’s history write that it once served as the middle eye of a South Indian deity of Lord Shiva. This deity belonged to the Chola dynasty, who ruled in South India from about A.D. 850, and revered Shiva as Nataraja, Lord of Dance. The Vegetable Lamb of Tartary (Latin: Agnus scythicus or Planta Tartarica Barometz[) is a legendary zoophyte of Central Asia, once believed to grow sheep as its fruit. It was believed the sheep were connected to the plant by an umbilical cord and grazed the land around the plant. When all accessible foliage was gone, both the plant and sheep died.
Underlying the legend is the cotton plant, which was unknown in Northern Europe before the Norman conquest of Sicily.

When Eglė with children came back to the sea, she saw the water darkening, with blood-red foam. She heard her husband voice: “It was your twelve brothers that slashed me to death with their scythes, and it was Little Aspen, who betrayed me”
Eglė was filled with grief and horror. She turned her children to the trees: Oak, Ash and Birch grew up to be tall, but Aspen trembles at the touch of the lightest breeze. Finally, Eglė herself turns into a spruce.

In the meantime,her twelve brothers were questioning the children about the secret password for calling the grass snake near the sea in order to kill him. Little Aspen was so threatened that she blurted out the secret.

“Eglė, Queen of the Grass Snakes” is a Lithuanian folk tale, the story of girl Eglė who found a grass snake in her shirt and had to promise marry him for making him leave her clothes. Her family were angered but Eglė - has given her word.
When Eglė with a wedding escort came to the shore of the sea, there a handsome youth met them and told he is the same grass snake. For many years they happily lived in rich palace in the bottom of the sea.

According to an ancient Lithuanian legend, Jūratė, the beautiful sea-goddess, who lived in a palace built of amber at the bottom of the Baltic Sea, fell in love with a fisherman Kastytis.
When thunder-god Perkūnas, the most powerful of the Lithuanian gods, found out about it, he became very angry at Jūratė for her love of a mere mortal and in a jealous rage with lightning bolts killed Kastytis and shattered Jūratė's undersea palace. 🧵

The caduceus is the traditional symbol of Hermes and features two snakes winding around an often winged staff. Ancient sources associate Hermes with a variety of attributes, including wisdom, trade, deception, thievery, eloquence, negotiation, and alchemy.

In Finnish and Karelian mythology Ilmarinen successfully performs the three impossible tasks set before him: he plows a field full of vipers, hunts down the bear of Tuonela and the wolf of Manala and finally fishes the Great Pike out of the Tuonela River. Louhi promises her daughter to Ilmarinen.

Legend has it in ancient China in 2737 B.C. the Emperor Shen Nong, a skilled ruler and scientist accidently discovered tea. While boiling water in his garden, a leaf fell from a nearby tree drifting into his pot. The emperor enjoyed drinking the infused water so much he compelled further research into the plant. It is suggested the Emperor also discovered teas medical properties during his research.

According to the Indian legend, a Buddhist monk, Bodhidharma, fell asleep during meditation. Thereafter, he cut off his eyelids. Ten tea plants then grew out of his eyelids, which when added to boiling water, drove away any traces of sleep. Thus, tea was discovered.

The crocotta or corocotta, crocuta, leucrocotta, or leucrotta is a mythical dog-wolf of India or Aethiopia, linked to the hyena and said to be a deadly enemy of men and dogs.
Strabo, who uses the word "crocuttas", describes the beast as the mixed progeny of a wolf and a dog (Geographica, XVI.4.16]).
Pliny in his work Natural History (VIII.72 and 107) variously described the crocotta as a combination between dog and wolf or between hyena and lion. 🧵

The legend says that when Ashtavakra was a developing fetus in his mother’s womb, he heard and learned the correct pronunciation of the Vedic Mantras being taught by his maternal grandfather and guru of his parents. So, one day when his father was practicing chanting those mantras he made eight mistakes in pronunciation and intonation of the mantras. The harp had two names, Daur Dá Bláo ("Oak of Two Meadows") and Cóir Cetharchair ("Four-Angled Music"or perhaps rather "Four-sided Rectitude"). On this harp, the Dagda bound the music so that it would not sound until he would call to it by its names. Pike parts were believed to have many magical qualities, especially jaws and teeth, which were believed to be a part of the creation of music. In Kalevala,the Finnish epic, the hero Väinämöinen makes a kantele (a type of string instrument) from a giant pike’s jaw. It was said that the music Väinämöinen played with his kantele was so beautiful that it made even him tear up as he was playing. All the people,animals and even gods came to hear him play.

Some scholars believe Alexander the Great is buried in Siwa Oasis in Egypt. According to the historian Pausanias, Ptolemy initially buried Alexander's body in Memphis. With the end of the fourth century B.C. or the beginning of the third century B.C., at the beginning of the Ptolemaic era, Alexander's body was moved from Memphis to Alexandria where he was reburied. Until this day, his exact burial location remains unknown.

The Goose Wife is a mythical female character that appears in tales from the Inuit and other ethnic groups that dwell across the circumpolar Arctic region. The usual story is that the geese alight on land, become women by taking off their goose-skins and bathe in a lake. Mbombo, also called Bumba, is the creator god in the religion and mythology of the Kuba people of Central Africa in the area that is now known as Democratic Republic of the Congo. Paul Bunyan is a giant lumberjack and folk hero in American and Canadian folklore. His tall tales revolve around his superhuman labors, and he is customarily accompanied by Babe the Blue Ox, his pet and working animal. The character originated in the oral tradition of North American loggers,and was later popularized by freelance writer William B. The Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve contains the remains of ancient, large building foundations, considered by the Sami to be the remains of Stallo dwellings. There is also a huge stone placed on some small pebbles on top near Lake Giengeljaure named stalostenen, which literally means "the Stallo stone." Legend dictates that a Stallo would have placed a stone here to prove his strength.

In the folklore of the Sámi, a Stállo (also Staaloe, Stalo or Northern Sami Stállu) is a large, human-like creature who likes to eat people and who therefore is usually in some form of hostilities with a human. Stallos are clumsy and stupid, and thus humans often gain the upper hand over them.

Osmotar is the Finnish goddess of beer and a female beer brewer. She was responsible for creating the first beer with the help of foxes, squirrels and martens.
Osmotar appears in the various stories of the origin of beer.
She also gives advice to one of the Daughters of Pohjola in Kalevala poem number 23.
