Thanks! It was a really beautiful run while it lasted. I am enjoying the unofficial and unsupported ultras. I have to carry more or be creative with my routes to create "aid stations" but that's part of the fun. More accessible with respect to being scent free/covid safe, cheaper, and local!

A beautiful 52km unofficial, unsupported urban ultra. Stunning day, beautiful weather. Ottawa is very pretty in the spring. A mix of multi use pathways, trails, and sidewalks. I saw a house martin, and other swallows galore, cormorants, turkey vultures, ducklings, and goslings (who I gave a wide berth to)! Stunning day to be outside. I had planned on a longer run but my period and all its fun kicked off 41km in and after another ten km or so, I had enough. I did love this training plan though! I have a few side quests in mind for the immediate future but I think I will go back to this plan later in the summer.
Also, it's World Mask Week! My kn95 that I carry for popping into stores or portapotties on my run colour coordinates with my running vest! PPE but make it sporty!

A double offering for #MeMadeMay - two makes from the past year! The Moss Jacket is made with Ikea fabric. It was the first time making this pattern, it's okay, but I need to adjust the shoulders and arms if I make it again. I am not in love with the bell sleeves but I really like the collar. The second jacket is made with #SecondHand denim and bias binding I made myself. It's from a discontinued pattern from Helen's Closet that I have modified with shortened sleeves. I have made a calf-length version of this pattern in teal corduroy (which I love!). On this one, I did enclosed seams on the yoke! They look so clean! Bias binding along the cuffs/bottom. I really like this! I have another jacket project in the pipeline but I would make this again in a lighter fabric as an alternative to a cardigan. I like a lot of space around my shoulders and this makes me happy. I also like shorter (bracelet) sleeves. I also love the collar although it was difficult to get right.

Hopping back into #MeMadeMay with a #YorkPinafore This is one of my favourite patterns. I have made three Yorks true to pattern and two with modifications. This one is in #SecondHand green denim with Frenched seams and finished with cotton bias binding on the arms and neck. York pinafores are very forgiving of body changes over time and they have fantastic pockets. They work for every season and need less washing due to wearing them as an outer layer that doesn't touch your armpits. I love them! Pup only cares about their coziness when snuggled behind me for work! They pass that test too!

Tulip festival was absolutely packed this evening. Still lots of tulips yet to bloom, especially under the trees. Will probably be absolutely stunning for a few more days. Would love to see the festival expanded. Shame the budget has been cut when there's such a huge demand for beauty and joy.

Haiti is represented by Haitian Espageti. I made the hot dogs for this but not the pasta. I made 2lbs of hot dogs and they were gone the same day. No leftover pasta, no leftover sauce, no leftover hot dogs. Delicious. The epis is very reminiscent of Afghan Green Sauce. Soul food. So good.

Look who ran her first 10K! So much fun! The whole crew paced us on bikes (& took pictures!). I am so enjoying running adventures with pup. She encourages me to stop and smell the roses, to go a little slower, to run intervals at full throttle, and to be more comfortable with spontaneous course corrections (to avoid coyote scat!). Her unbridled enthusiasm that unleashes the second she sees me getting dressed to go running is contagious. So much joy!

Another cosy make for #MeMadeMay
This is a self-drafted skirt made in a cotton jersey. Fold down waist and double layers so it's cosy and warm. Worn with a second hand sweater and store bought t-shirt. I absolutely adore this sweater and I have a pattern for 'The Weekender' which I think would be almost identical. However, my knitting hasn't progressed that far yet - to be able to read and understand the pattern instructions as well as follow them still seems an ambitious goal. One day!

Post work selfie with the pup in a York Pinafore. The York was one of my first patterns and introduced me to French seams and bias binding (two great loves). This was the second version in a heavy knit cotton blanket from the as-is section of IKEA. So cosy! The scarf was a more recent make in cotton yarn that the pup provided moral support for. Soft and warm outfit - perfect for pup to sleep against as I work!

Studio Tunic in linen for #MeMadeMay
I have a soft spot for all pinafores. Easy to layer which works for all seasons. This is made with a second hand linen and finished with cotton bias binding. I love how roomy this make is. Perfect for being comfortable at work. I have a #NoHardPants at work policy! My favourite part of this is that the neck hole, arm holes, and hem are all finished with bias binding that I made myself. It's beautiful! I love #SecretPretty !

Hopping into Me Made May with a little knitting. Slowly working on this blanket when I watch English-language shows. Pup provides moral support. I cast on entirely too many stitches when I started so it far exceeds the size of the circular needles and sits like a ruffle while I knit. I have ordered longer circular needles that will hopefully give me a little more space.

Pup checks in every couple of metres. Hard to capture the cuteness while running but it's a mix of "Look how well I am doing this!" and "Is it time to go zoom, zoom?!" Adorable!
Still pretty chilly on runs. I saw trout lilies on my long run last weekend but too far off the trail to get a picture. Spring is kicking off slowly. Very refreshing though!

Guyana is represented by Guyanese Sponge Cake (Pound Cake). I really enjoy finding out about the linguistic idiosyncrasies in food! This is called Sponge Cake but elsewhere similar recipes would be referred to as Pound Cake. I think the previous Pound Cake was the Plain Cake from Barbados. Delicious and disappearing quickly!

Jacket adventures! I am pleased with how the shape of this turned out. Contrary to the cautions in the pattern, I managed to avoid puckering in the arm pits with a lot of ironing. I did enclosed seams on the yoke and they look so neat and tidy. The shoulders lie well. I love the sleeves and hem - the bias binding looks great. I also made enough bias binding for a few projects. But damn, I fought with the collar (same as with the moss jacket) and it's okay but I may still rip it out and have another go at it. I knew it was risky doing this pattern in denim and I paid for it in time spent ironing. I will leave it for a bit and see if I can get past the imperfections.

Guinea-Bissau is represented by Raivas (Cinnamon Cookies). Made for dunking, we tried them with a matcha latte, hot chocolate, and coffee. They were delicious and all 18 disappeared instantly! Like a softer version of biscotti. Very tasty. I made half in the traditional random squiggles and half like breadsticks.

As we wade through February, I am learning from pup that any day above -10C is a good day to get outside and run! Her enthusiasm, as long as it isn't too cold, is contagious! On days when it is colder and I am slogging solo, I am reminded that any day outside is a good day.
Week 7 of this training block done, plan adherence pretty consistently at 100%. Grateful to be grinding. The determined march towards spring continues!

Grenada is represented by Grenadian Fry Bake and Saltfish Souse. Amazing how something so far from ‘home’ feels so familiar. Fry Bake is so similar to Toutons that I had to have one with molasses! I think I may have a new Touton recipe! Some recipes land just right and immediately become part of rotation (I made El Salvador’s Sopa de Gallina again yesterday). This is one of those recipes! The molasses that is traditionally had with Toutons, comes from the Caribbean. The salt fish that is used to make Souce has historically come from Newfoundland! For this recipe, from Newfoundland too, as I had some that I brought back from my last trip to the Rock. So good. No leftovers!

I really enjoyed this! Souvlaki always reminds me of summer as that's usually when BBQ happens. Had to get innovative has the temperature didn't permit cooking outside but it was a nice treat!

Dessert Edition!
Greece is represented by Kokakia, Greek Mini Cream Puff Cakes. I missed the mini part. These were huge but delicious! The pastry cream was not as stiff as I would like – my experiments with alternatives to corn starch are still evolving – but so good. The recipe was so huge, I also made a cake with the excess batter.

She loves it but she's not super hardcore temperature wise. Single digits negative are fine but much colder than that and she skips the run for a short walk instead. Luckily it has been mild.

Happiness is a running buddy!
Pup is a keen runner. The second I start getting ready, she’s on me. The sadness when it’s too cold or too far for her (she’s still in single digit distances) would break your heart. She’s really good at locking into a pace and holding steady. She loves the “zoom, zoom” of intervals. So much fun!

Ghana is represented by Kube Cake (coconut candy). This was interesting. I’ve lost count of how many caramels I’ve made in this journey. I tried it with both dried and fresh coconut. I think I came closer to the mark with the dried coconut but both are good.

I think the arbutus was the redo of this one. It was called suki and I bought the pattern in 2020. I think both use a lot of fabric. I love my corduroy version for winter.

I think it's called a dressing robe now. But it was released under a different name and then withdrawn due to appropriation concerns. No buttons or zippers. I am going to modify the collar - maybe something similar to the moss jacket. I made this in corduroy for my housecoat and love it.

So it begins. The stash has been raided and is headed for the clothes line. Pattern has been chosen. I am using a discontinued Helen's Closet pattern that I intend to modify to make a lined denim jacket. If I can get this done by the time it's warm enough to wear it, I will be doing okay!

Yes, heatwaves too. I don't mind that much but I can't run in smoke. Hopefully this year isn't too bad. I'm buoyed every time it snows as that helps reduce the fires in the coming year.
Getting the ingredients is a challenge. Even living in a capital city (with all the embassies), with a large international community, I am amazed at how hard it is to find some things. I sometimes choose recipes based on what I know I can get or spend time figuring out substitutes. For a lot of spice mixes, I find recipes for them and make them myself. I often think about how welcoming we are for newcomers if they can't find food from home easily. Great way to explore all the little grocery stores tho!

Plan is all unofficial and local in Ottawa. Weather is a big factor. This past year was the second worst wildfire season on record and it made for poor air quality. Challenging to train around. Then health issues. I was benched more than I would have liked. Fingers crossed for this year!
