Mid-afternoon, mid-city, the middle of the Summer holidays. This is usually one of the most bustling streets in the city centre. Always lots of people walking around, parking bikes, waiting to meet someone, cycling by, window-shopping, standing while doing something on their phone, hanging out, going in and out of the busy supermarket. Unsettling to see it almost deserted, the few people around all walking in the thin line of shadow on one side of the street.

Oh my there was so much Monday yesterday. A most Mondayish Monday. Tuesday's barely started and I am already thinking What A Week. And that's before I even start getting nervous about how the highly visible right-wing parties will do in the general election here in Denmark today. Nothing for it but to go cast my one vote, I suppose. Here's a byway where I assume the birds are singing and the bees are buzzing, not caring what day it is or what humans are up to.

It’s nice to see new neighbours move into the Fediverse. It feels unwelcoming to see people immediately interview them about the purity of their intentions. Or telling them You’re Doing It Wrong. I deactivated Google Play on my phone. The electricity company app was the first to be bricked. 'You must update.'
I wrote to them: ’I don’t have Google or Apple. Where else can I update the app?’ Nowhere else, they replied.
I wrote (politely) back: ’I can’t use your app any more then. It’s an odd requirement to make of your customers. A Norlys customer can only access all Norlys services if they are also a customer of one of two specific private for-profit US companies.’

I told local friends who know the area that I would get the bus from the bus stop near the Squirrel In A Top Hat.
What are you babbling about, what squirrel, there's no squirrel, they said.
The map says there’s a squirrel in a top hat, I said.

Organic Maps. Another example of an app I found in F-Droid that turns out to be nicer than the BigTech one I switched from. Not disenshittification, but enhancification. It's great for walking & cycling. Nice to use. Works offline. Feels 'human-sized'. First time I used it was to find a bus stop. It showed me the right one & noted 'shelter + bench'. To compare, I looked the same up on Google Maps (web). The actual map was barely visible behind ads for local businesses.

I have things to do today that I don’t want to do so I will be procrastitooting. No time like the present to start. Here's a picture of Paddington.The smile on my face when I turned a corner and bumped into him! I thanked him for all the good books and all the marmalade sandwiches, because as a child, I refused to eat any other lunch and I always ate it while reading one of my Paddingtons even though we weren't supposed to read at the table.

This struck me as a lovely idea. A citywide book club for people who read on the bus. The Dublin Bus book club selects a book by an Irish author every six weeks.
Also a lovely idea: instead of partnering with a company like Amazon, they’ve partnered with a beloved local independent book store, Chapters, for discounted books and events for the book club members.

I wish there were a symbol we could put at the end of a toot about something inconsequential or irrelevant-in-the-big-scheme to indicate: I know world events are awful. I am not ignoring it or untouched by it. I am just right now reacting to the overwhelmingness of it all by tooting about something insignificant and harmless and maybe even nice.
This thought springs from the fact that I just hesitated to share this random call to dance as a Silent Sunday photo because it seemed too frivolous.

I stopped using Booking.com ages ago, tired of the spam and Big Corporateness of it. Now I only book directly with hotels. Every time, it's cheaper and the experience is better. If I need to contact a hotel, I communicate with a human. When I needed to make a date change not covered by the booking: 'no problem!' They changed it instantly for free. I'd forgotten how actual customer service used to be. I also forgot to actually delete my account. #DanmarkSkifter reminded me. I just deleted it.

I'm enjoying the results of disenshittifying my digital life so much that I need a more celebratory word for it than 'disenshittifying'. So far, every solution I’ve switched to is better than the Big Tech one I left. Not ’better’ as in ’not enshittified’, but better designed. LibreOffice: does what I need and only does what I tell it to do. AntennaPod: much better features than Spotify. Tuta: functional and calm and 10 months later, I still haven’t received a single spam mail.

‘Oxveckorna.’ Now there’s a word I needed, but didn’t know existed until now. ‘The ox weeks.’ The long, dark, featureless weeks between New Year and Easter when there are no public holidays, and everything’s dull, and the weather is harsh, and you just trudge to and from work, day in, day out. The weeks when you slog through every day like a toiling ox. Tack, my Swedish friends, for naming the concept.

Each time I see cycleways & paths still treacherous hours after the roads have been cleared, I recall this 99% Invisible episode.
"In Sweden, the council reversed its approach and plowed side-roads & paths first. It had a huge impact, reducing number of people admitted to emergency centres, particularly women. It had an economic impact from lower healthcare costs. Driving through a few inches was less dangerous than walking through snow, particularly if pushing a pram."

Brilliantly! I had wondered about that too in advance. One of the features of the newer Penguin Random recordings is that Bill Nighy is the voice of the footnotes in every book. (And Peter Serafinowicz is always the voice of Death.) The same little chime signals the start and end of each footnote and it works perfectly.

I was a print-edition Pratchett purist for decades. Then about a year ago, I chanced one of the new Penguin Random House audio editions. What a revelation! Stunning, laugh-aloud performances by outstanding narrators. You feel like you're watching a film, or are in the story. Might be worth a try, if you still want to check out his work. (If I had to choose: The Truth read by Mathew Baynton or any one read by Indira Varma)

Photographers Lee Miller & David Scherman in Hitler’s bathtub, 1945. While there, they heard Hitler was dead. They'd come straight from Dachau. They washed its dirt off in his bath.
"He'd been an evil-machine-monster all these years until I ate and slept in his house. He became less fabulous and therefore more terrible."
I saw these photos recently and thought: will a similar photo be taken one day, in a gold bathtub? Then I thought: imagine that I can even imagine that.

I've added a new 2026 Digital Resolution to my 'Denmark switches from Big Tech' goals.
I had already switched from Patreon to Steady. Thanks to @npub1j05…n8qa for making that possible after he added Steady as a Mastodon.green payment option.
Now my Microsoft subscription is the only thing left on PayPal and I'm almost deMicrosofted. So I'll be cancelling, not renewing, that. So now I commit to deleting my PayPal account. Today. Inspired by @npub1r8y…9r2v, who just did this.

The #MagicInTheMundane tag has reminded me of the time I'd just finished a book and was looking at the shelves, wondering what to read next. Suddenly the setting sun turned vivid orange and hit one section, as if it had poured through the narrow passage of a megalithic chamber to show me what to pick. The effect lasted bare seconds. Just long enough for me to snap a photo and to choose the Tore Renberg novel it shone upon. Because obviously I was not going to defy the gods.

’Denmark Switches.’ A national campaign to collectively move off Big Tech. March 20th is Big Switch Day. I’ve named my goal now. I’m already almost deMicrosofted, except for my photo archive. I moved to Libre & Tuta mail and have been purging photos as I await the release of Tuta drive. Now I’m committing myself to just get the photos off OneDrive and on to my computer, that I own, in my house, by March 20th. Then I’ll delete Microsoft. Then I’ll boast about it on the Fediverse.

I cannot believe today is the first Monday of the year. I literally just checked the calendar to be sure. It feels as if it’s already been a long year and that every day of it has been a Monday. I think I will keep the Literature Clock open on my screen whenever I read the news. It’s like having somebody hum a soothing melody to me as I doomscroll. If you don’t already know it: it’s a real-time clock created by Johannes Enevoldsen at Aarhus University using crowdsourced literary excerpts. Each minute displays a quote from a book that mentions the corresponding time of day.

Strangers, purportedly men, sending a private message that just says 'do you mind if I ask you something?' or 'can I ask you a question?' Is this some new scam? I’ve just blocked my third in two days. I blocked them quicker than a reply guy on a 5000-character instance who lectured me about Linux, so I didn’t notice if the messages were all from the same server. The wording was similar but the profiles were different. Strange scam, if it is one. There were no dodgy links.

We're not going to get a chance either, I fear, if radical leadership doesn't start happening soon. Collective action, imposing necessary climate measures that we may dislike, like when the lockdowns and pandemic restrictions were announced.
