On January 30, the EU Council voted to endorse a two-year extension of "Chat Control 1.0". This is a significant setback. If passed, it legalizes the mass scanning of private messages and photos by US tech giants using error-prone AI, without any suspicion of crime. It also paves the way for mandatory ID verification (ending anonymity) and effectively bans anyone under 17 from using messaging apps. potentially preventing them from even chatting with their own parents.
**However, the fight is not over.**
The Council's vote is not the final word. Under EU legislative procedures, the **European Parliament must also agree** to the extension. Right now, the power to stop this lies with the **Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE)**.
They are deliberating *this week* to set the Parliament's position before the current regulation expires in April. If the LIBE Committee stands firm and rejects the extension, this mass surveillance regime can still be stopped.
**We must act now to influence their decision.**
Please do not stay silent. Contact the LIBE Committee members. Tell them to reject the extension of the Regulation and to defend our fundamental right to privacy.
We need targeted, judicial solutions, not a permanent state of mass surveillance.

Spending ad money to warn people about mass surveillance instead of selling VPN subscriptions. This is why I trust you.

Swedish police have been secretly using Palantir's AI tools for atleast five years to profile citizens, pulling data from BankID, phone operators, social media. When journalists asked for documents, police refused, citing "national security."
This is Palantir. The company a UN report accused of being complicit in Gaza genocide. The one tracking immigrants in the US, building registers of British citizens' sex lives and political views.
They're using tools from that company on Swedish citizens and won't even admit it exists. National security is being used to justify mass surveillance and it pisses me off.

Fair pushback but France isn't operating in a vacuum here. The EU has been pushing Chat Control, which is the same surveillance agenda France is using to justify this. So yeah, France is doing the threatening, but the EU is absolutely creating the environment where governments feel empowered to demand backdoors from security projects.
Not misinformation, just pointing out that this isn't just one rogue country, it's part of a broader push that the EU is leading on.

@npub1kwa…e0nj is being threatened by French authorities for refusing to add backdoors and they're dealing with coordinated attacks in French media right now. They're pulling out of France entirely, moving all their servers, and fighting off a wave of bullshit one-sided reporting that makes them look like they're helping criminals.
They need us to fight back. Support them however you can, whether that's a dollar, sharing their story, pushing back on the garbage news coverage when you see it, or just telling someone you know about what's happening. All of it matters because they're drowning in attacks from governments and media and bad actors who want them gone.
This is the only Android OS that actually makes me feel like privacy isn't just marketing. They fight for us now they need us to fight for them.
The EU is allowing this, governments think they can just threaten developers into compliance, and if we stay quiet we're letting it happen. Show up for them in whatever way you're able to.

Time is running out.
On Sept 12, EU countries vote on chat control - a law that would make every messaging app scan your private chats before you even hit send.
Only six countries openly oppose it right now. Germany and several others are still undecided. MEPs from different parties are warning this is mass surveillance on everyone.
I'm terrified my kids will grow up in a world where every private thought gets scanned before they can share it. You can't have democracy without free speech, and you can't have free speech under surveillance.
