I *am* an IP lawyer and I (along with many others) have been saying it for a while, that if the position the “AI” co’s are taking with respect to the legality of scraping “publicly available” materials were true (that all “publicly available” materials are “public domain” free to be used as raw materials without consent required), then copyright ceases to exist and all their own materials will be free for everyone else to use the very first time they’re leaked. That’ll be fun for the co.

Brin is worth the same as every other human on the planet.

I don’t think it’s the same at all, and I say this from conversations IRL withe people who normally vote across all three parties, or at least, have previously but who right now recognize that the most important thing at this moment is unity, and singular purpose, and everything else can be sorted in meetings behind closed doors. Lots of challenges and room for discussion internally, but public face: unity. I think that’s true for many people.

“Copyright” is quite literally a body of laws which recognize the property owner’s exclusive right to control the “copying” of the property, of the work. If anyone can use any property they can access - legally or not presently authorized by law - to build their own commercial product (and all of these are commercial products), without need for authorization, then the concept is gutted (as Musk and Altman want).

It’s a feature, not a bug. They have a solid contingent of people who would like to install “head-of-household vote”, which of course, leaves it to the male of the household to vote for what he thinks is best for <ahem> everyone. Add to that the push to repeal no fault divorce, and Vance’s comments… feature not a bug, appealing to a very specific demographic.

I think it would really help more Americans understand the gravity of what has been going on if media stopped using phrases like “reverse the results of the election” which is not a thing, or “overturn the election”, (also not a thing), and started using the language the rest of the world uses: attempted coup.
It’s not “reversing” or “overturning” an election; it’s ignoring the results of an election and installing a dictator through fraud, threats, and violence, ending democracy.
