that would be so good. Back in (guess what year) we had plane tickets and hotel reservations for a family trip to the Baltic States plus Finland, but everything was canceled. At the time, I was unsure how we were going to transit the borders. Sadly, the trip has still not been accomplished. A through train line would be fantastic.

Al Nier was instrumental (ha!) in pioneering age dating of Precambrian rocks. When I was at Minnesota, his lab in the physics department was still around. The Geology department then hired a number of outstanding mass spectrometrists who (continuing to this day) have made their own great impacts.

Both my immigrant parents (Lithuania relocated to Germany during WWII, and India) were not citizens when I was born in the US. My spouse's parents (Iceland) also not. All of them became naturalized. I still remember the day my mom proudly came home from her ceremony.

Similar in that it does use X-ray as the input energy to the sample! But, different in that what it measures is emitted electron energy. We can learn what elements are in the sample, plus info on how they are bonded and their charge.
