@npub1cdx…k3h7 Your parsing in part 2 handles more edge cases and does report invalid input. My strategy in AOC is to no worry about giving a wrong result for an invalid input (as long as it is not a safety issue. I care about not panicking or causing a segfault when I use unsafe).

@npub1cdx…k3h7 - Hashing with u32 was twice slower on my machine than u64. I have no idea why though and I didn't investigate it any further. You can try returning a u64 as the hash and try to cast less.

- split has to search for the commas and then give you the slice between two. This means that it has to check the characters in the slice too. I tried using split. But it made my parsing about twice slower. A single scan is more efficient, but not always practical.
- Why don't you have the state field of the hasher as a u64? You could save some castings that way.

@npub16pd…3nda One might ask, why not just put the file `submod.rs` inside the `submod` directory (instead of next to it or `mod.rs` inside it)?
Well, that would make having a submodule with the same name (submod::submod) impossible with variant 2! (Not that I would recommend that design)
More importantly, it makes expanding from variant 2 to variant 3 very easy! Or actually, it makes variant 3 only an extension of 2.

@npub16pd…3nda The first variant with a an inline module is almost only used for tests that you want have in the same file but with namespacing.
The second variant is obviously useful to have a file as a module without needing to create a directory if it doesn't have submodules.

I used mod.rs too until I had more than two mod.rs files open in my editor and I lost it. You don't even have to open multiple mod.rs files to be confused. If you have one open in a hidden tab, do you know which mod.rs file this is? I ended up closing mod.rs files quickly after editing them. Then I found about the solution with the file `submod.rs` next to the directory `submod`.

@npub1jx3…m6x6 Rust offers both, channels and locking with a Mutex or RwLock. There also more flexible channels in crossbeam:

It doesn't force you to use the easier and less error prone channels, but it also makes sharing memory much easier. It is proven that data races are not possible in Rust. On the other hand, Go knows about the problem and tell you to run a program with an optin tool as long until a data race is detected (if it was reached):

@npub1ha2…k5hs One could create a new web framework that is synchronous which offers trivial parallelization (launch multiple instances). But how do you share state then without a database? A required database increases the complexity.
And what about performance? Such a framework would not have the same performance like Axum. Who would use it then?

I posted a rant today about a device crashing on a NULL pointer dereference but I deleted it mainly because its language was not friendly. Sorry for that.
But a "C++ nerd" (from their bio) tried to teach me that
- you can let your programs crash in "safe" languages too (surprise)
- Option::unwrap in #Rust is the same as a NULL pointer dereference (enum,ownership = bloat)
- it is a skill issue (always)
What I actually learned:
Don't tag other languages and keep people in their bubble

@npub1e2g…6q8w @npub1ayj…hw9x I did consider Bulma before starting with Tailwind. Bulma did seam to me like Bootstrap and I didn't want something like it. Bootstrap is very limiting.
Tera is awesome! I use it for my static websites (since Zola uses it). But for my own binaries, I much prefer Askama for its compilation checks.

@npub1e08…6ucj It would be much easier if you could host PostgreSQL. How did you plan to host OxiTraffic? If you are using Docker or Podman, then that would be only one additional container. Maybe I could also update the template compose.yaml to include PostgreSQL for a better getting started.

But since you are the first one trying to use OxiTraffic, I could also make a breaking change to only support SQLite and hope that no one did host it until now except me. I can do a hacky migration for myself.

BUT, when I wanted to implement support for both databases in OxiTraffic, I did realize that SQLx does not have good support for multiple databases yet:

I could use one of the suggested workarounds like having multiple crates in a workspace, but that would be really overwhelming for testing, publishing etc.

@npub1k7f…gqqs Using Silverblue for years now. Perfect, stable desktop with recent software. Just for the case that something goes wrong, you can roll back very easily. I did install it for my girlfried and she uses it since she bought her laptop. Upgrades are not a problem at all.

@npub1e08…6ucj It just became the default database system for me since it is more flexible than SQLite. But since I don't have any complex queries in OxiTraffic, I will look into supporting SQLite as well. I will let you know when I have progress :D
For me personally, it is just an additional Podman container. But I understand that it is not as convenient as SQLite.

@npub185a…e3wn But if you learn Flask in Python for example and master its ecosystem without trying anything else, then you probably should expand your horizon. I was there myself and got stuck on Flask too long missing out on all the deep concepts I wouldn't have learned without learning Rust.
But, because I had a good understanding of how backends are designed in Python, I was able to pick up backend development in Rust while learning its new concepts.

@npub185a…e3wn I think that I have to elaborate on what I mean with mastering a language. I don't mean syntax nor ecosystem. I mean that you have to solve different problems with a language before hopping again. Some of the concepts I think one has to try in a new language to get a deep understanding:
- Multithreading
- Async
- Interfaces (or traits) and/or object oriented design depending on the language
- GUI
- Small web server
- Functional concepts like iterators
- CLI
- Project organization
- etc.

You shouldn't be the one that knows only one language.
But if you start the hopping before mastering a language, then you will never know how async programming really works behind the scene for example. You only learn the new syntax for using async.

I did just unsubscribe from ThePrimeTime (another channel of the ThePrimeagen) because of that. He is getting the Linux distro hopper for programming languages.

Just for the Twitch audience. You know why? Because it is easier than talking about deep concepts in one language. Scratched the surface? Let's move to the next surface before the audience gets bored.
Syntax is easy. Look beyond syntax.

Language hopping is like distro hopping.
You always stay on the surface and waste time on relearning the same thing in a new fashion instead of getting things done and having a deep understanding.
Be an expert in one language before hopping to another.
I am biased towards #Rust. But I would still tell you to start with something like #Python or #JuliaLang and get good at it before moving on to Rust.
Focus and fight against the shiny object syndrome!

I did delete my post about the synchronous HTTP client `ureq`. Why reinvent the wheel when `reqwest` already has a blocking API?

@npub19pg…ygka Good question. I thought that the blocking version of reqwest would use the tokio runtime under the hood which would be a big overhead. But now that you asked, I did check it again and that does not seem to be the case. ureq is just reinventing the wheel? A good simple crate to study HTTP clients, I guess. @npub1e08…6ucj Having more than one subdomain (or subdomain and no subdomain) pointing to the same website without redirecting to only one is not a good idea. It lowers the website score on search engines.
Since I see that your website redirects www to no www, you will not have a problem. Visits are counted using a small JS snippet 20 seconds after staying on a page. Redirection will not be a problem.
