Why is it that I keep seeing "everyone should pin their GitHub Actions versions to a SHA because that's the secure way to do it" and not "GitHub should build tooling that creates and manages Actions lockfiles by default"? Am I just missing that version and only seeing the former one boosted?

PSA: You have less than two weeks to nominate someone for PSF Fellowship for Q4 of 2025. Details at https://www.python.org/psf/fellows/, and I wrote a blog post about the topic last year at https://www.jonafato.com/2024/10/31/psf-fellow-nominations-q4-due-date.

If you're eligible to vote in the DSF elections, please check your inbox, set aside some time to read each candidate statement, and vote before the due date of 23:59 on November 26, 2025 AoE. It's important, and it won't take you a ton of time.

Feedback is hard to come by, especially positive feedback. If you appreciate someone, if their work has helped you, and especially if you want them to continue doing the things they're doing, let them know.

I'm finally able to attend DjangoCon US in person this year (in just a few days!). It looks like there are still tickets available (see the "Buy Tickets" link at https://2025.djangocon.us/), so I hope you'll join in-person or online. Looking forward to chatting about Python, Django, and conferences with old and new friends. See you there?

🕛 The quarterly due date for PSF Fellow nominations [1] is about nine days away. I've talked / posted about this at length in the past and shared a blog post on the topic last year [2]. These nominations and recognition mean a lot to the people who help build the language, frameworks, communities, and other parts of the vast Python ecosystem, and you can really make someone's day by writing up a short paragraph or two about them.

Do you know of examples of a software library's test suite catching a bug in its upstream dependencies? I've seen a few of these over the years, and I'd like to put together a small list. Things like:
- A programming language implementation's test suite uncovering a bug in other implementations
- A library's test suite uncovering a bug in the language implementation itself
- A framework addon's / extension's test suite uncovering a bug in the framework

This episode is worth watching. I find it interesting not just for its content but also for the fact that (by my reading) it's an episode of a series that would make sense on and is of high enough production value for public television but is direct to YouTube, which is not something I've seen a ton of. This thought will live in my head for a while. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5SavjMFRLg

For PyCon US in particular, are you aware of / were you present for the 2019 "The Art of Python" Hatchery program (https://pycon-archive.python.org/2019/hatchery/artofpython/)? I mention this mostly as an example (among others) of conferences incorporating art that deviates from more "traditional" conference presentations into their schedules.

I (and I'm sure several of the other Conference Chats folks) would be happy to chat, though I imagine the answers would largely be brief and boring -- more offerings mean more (often volunteer) time and resources, which are scarce. Volunteering / organizing can help, provided there are not other limiting factors (which vary quite a bit from conference to conference, including venue time and space).

2025-02-12 15:32:27 UTC

You have a week and some hours left before the 2025 Q1 due date to nominate people for PSF Fellow memberships. I wrote a bit about this leading up to Q4's due date at https://www.jonafato.com/2024/10/31/psf-fellow-nominations-q4-due-date. While you're at it, check out the links in the "further reading" section of my blog post for other ways you can show your appreciation for folks in the Python world.

If you decide you want to complete that Contributing Membership process, it should only take a few minutes at https://psfmember.org/civicrm/contribute/transact/?reset=1&id=32, and I'm always happy to help folks enroll.
Keep in mind that historically you'll need to be enrolled as a member with voting privileges before candidate nominations are published. PSF elections are not any time soon, but I regularly see folks forget to enroll until it's too late to do so for an election they want to vote in.

The PSF's membership system is a bit more complicated. The different membership types are described at https://www.python.org/psf/membership-faq/#what-membership-classes-are-there, and you can check your Basic Membership status at https://www.python.org/users/membership/ and your Supporting or Contributing Membership status at https://psfmember.org/user-information/ (this page will display an error if you're not logged in, so head to https://psfmember.org/wp-login.php to log in first).

I think I know what you mean by this, but can you elaborate on which parts of PSF and DSF memberships have you feeling uneasy (private message is fine with me as well)? For what it's worth, I have feedback for both of these membership programs and have only been a DSF member for a month, so I am coming at this from a "how to we make this whole process better?" angle.

You have until the end of November 26th (anywhere on Earth), 2024 to fill out the form for yourself or to nominate someone else to become a member of the DSF to meet this election cycle's due dates. That's less than a week away, so don't procrastinate if that's on your todo list.

I think those are just two separate questions. A planned and graceful transition can be difficult for a lot of people, but I read Jay's post as an opportunity to think on that deliberately and avoid the more drama-filled alternative of someone clinging onto their role long after it's outgrown them. I would personally welcome a week without a tech news site story about some community or project leader burning everything down, but seamless transition stories don't get clicks.

Feel free to tell me to stay in my lane here, but may I also suggest broadening the community events language? e.g. many of us Python conference organizers factor Django's place in the Python web dev community when into the talk selection process. (Obviously there are Python events that are wholly unrelated to Django as well, but all of these things tend to be trusting that people won't abuse the system, anyway.)

I'm vaguely curious about what it would take to run something like that at a large enough scale that it paid any bills. I imagine it makes some sense for people who design the objects they sell (and maybe eventually plan to move to a larger volume method of manufacturing?), but the model of just printing something from thingiverse on demand feels like a real race to the bottom.

If you've attempted to register as a PSF member (of any membership tier), have had trouble doing so for whatever reason, and are willing to share your experience, please PM me. @npub1vv8…6fhk Is there an issue tracker / place to contribute to https://psfmember.org/? In particular, I heard from multiple people this last election cycle that they gave up trying to enroll as a managing / contributing member because they were unable to find the proper links and information (that mostly exist at https://www.python.org/psf/membership-faq/#what-membership-classes-are-there), and I'd like to help remove this barrier.

Glad I'm not the only one deferring to that FAQ.
It's good to know that the PSF is aware of the issues. My point with these posts isn't to call anyone out, I'm just trying to direct people to the correct forms, and I appreciate that some folks are amplifying that. I'll give it a rest when I stop learning that my Python community friends are not registered for these various memberships 🙂.

2024-06-22 02:39:53 UTC

There's also https://www.python.org/users/membership/ for the prerequisite Basic Membership enrollment, which is linked from the individual enrollment forms.
I tend to use https://www.python.org/psf/membership-faq/#what-membership-classes-are-there as a source of truth because it links to the different membership class forms individually and directly, but I'm not sure if there is a more dedicated or succinct page for this purpose. I don't think psfmember.org links to the Contributing and Managing options from the home / landing page.

The general context is the third change listed at https://pyfound.blogspot.com/2024/06/for-your-consideration-proposed-bylaws.html (and IMHO an unfortunate volume of discourse surrounding it).
I am happy to help with the voting membership registration if you'd like. There's a form at https://psfmember.org/civicrm/contribute/transact/?reset=1&id=32 that shouldn't take 15 minutes (and will hopefully become simpler soon), and if you've donated within the past year, you should also be eligible for a "supporting membership".

2024-06-21 23:34:13 UTC

- reply

Some context: I'm pretty active within the world of Python community organizers. The angle that I haven't seen brought up as much: the PSF's actions and endorsements have real power that extend beyond the PSF itself. Community organizers throw around the question "what does PyCon US do?" *a lot* when they have decisions to make. A PSF Fellowship is a pretty strong signal that someone would be a great addition to a Python community (of which there are many).

2024-06-21 23:28:40 UTC

- reply

This is not something presented as "person did a good thing once", it's a lifetime credential that should include the expectation to continue to follow the Code of Conduct. This is not a high bar. No one is asking that Fellows continue doing extraordinary work (although plenty of them do), just to maintain the basic conduct that is expected of all community members.

2024-06-21 23:26:43 UTC

I have a more verbose blog post about this that I may or may not publish, but tl;dr: the PSF being able to make endorsements that someone is "an example of what we aspire to be in the Python community" but unable to revoke them for Code of Conduct reasons is a problem. Many people view PSF Fellowships as a Big Deal™, and the title carries weight.
