I love that the German titles are generic fantasy and the French titles are straight-up porn

as if subjugating your neighbors wasn’t a New York tradition going back to the 1640s

trying to think who else might conceivably say something similar I thought “maybe France?” and ended up at this essay from a WNYC-listening Haitian back in 2012 who called it “a dangerous banalization of the idea of individual liberty in American society” (or something like that—my French is so-so at best), which seems spot on https://haitiantimes.com/fr/2012/05/05/cela-veut-dire-quoi--c%27est-un-pays-libre/

I feel like I got all the way through library school without ALA-APA being mentioned once, but IDK if that’s a cause or just a symptom

OK so it’s now canon that Neal Stephenson secretly wrote this, right?

"It is important that you do not discuss your opinions about unions or union representation with represented employees."
Important to whom?

The UC Berkeley Library is looking for a part-time research data curator to join their pilot project providing research data storage to faculty. 50% time and a 20-month term appointment, but it's a union-represented Associate Librarian position and fully remote eligible. And the team on this project are great people.

(Oh, and as you'll see from the job listing, they're not afraid to use words like "diverse" and "equitable".)

ugh, that’s a terrible edit. Like the formatting, that’s legit; but “in case other people with the same problem run across this question, like I did” is a totally normal thing for people to put in SE answers (maybe I would put a line break and parentheses, but whatever), and the rewrite from “I had” to “I found” is just gratuitous @npub12s4…gj4c

So what exactly's been going on at #ALA? Layoffs related to the ongoing polycrisis? Something more sinister?
(Like, I wasn't concerned, till the ALA prez emailed me to try to assuage my concerns)

note: of course I can absolutely afford this, but for lots of students in my program that's groceries for the week. two weeks, because this course has two required textbooks!
keep working "to recognize and dismantle systemic and individual biases," ALA peeps, and one day maybe you'll make some progress on "[enhancing] diversity and inclusion", too

You’d think cranking out new editions of $85 textbooks every couple of years would be clearly against the #ALA Code of Ethics, but surprise! there's nothing in there about economic justice
