On this day, August 26th, 1970, American women took to the streets for the Women’s Strike for Equality. This also marked the 50th anniversary of the passing of the 19th amendment, which effectively gave women the right to vote.

our moderation team is small; a handful of folks moderating 15k accounts. It’s a LOT of work. I think we do a pretty good job, but we’re not perfect. And we see some absolutely horrific things that I’d love to avoid.
But I wouldn’t ever want to see AI taking the load on this. Because the reality is that it can’t be trusted to moderate, or suggest moderation, with integrity. Especially when it comes to equity.

in my talk, I share some research on this. I cite a ProPublica study about a predictive policing system built on AI called COMPAS. The data shows that it was incredibly biased. It put/kept Black people in prison at significantly higher rates than white people who committed the same crimes, even when white people were far more likely to recidivate.

as a moderator, I love the idea on paper. But I can with almost absolute certainty say that it won't work. It will let marginalized people down. Especially Black folks and women.
I've been studying and giving a talk on ethics in AI since 2012. My research shows that AI is a reflection of who we are. And we are ethically challenged. And given that the majority of people who build these systems are white men, the problem is exacerbated.

But the real story is that your mobile privacy means nothing, especially to Google. They can and will at any point for any reason hand over your location data to the police simply because you were in the area of a crime.

good question. While the <button> tag can be used for links, that's not its technical purpose. They're designed for use with forms.
An <a> takes you somewhere, while a <button> performs an action. Screen readers will also read links as links and buttons as buttons, the latter inferring action.

in my experience Mammoth, Wooly, and Ice Cubes do well with search. I can’t say for sure how many options and operators they support, but they do work well for me. Ivory is the absolute worst. Don’t even try theirs or you’ll be more frustrated. Nothing beats the main UI, though. Apps are nicer experience than mobile web, but if you use mobile web for search you’ll be in good shape.

They are 3 partners, all white and only 1 a woman. They've published 10 books, every one of which was written by a man. Except for 1, which was written by the woman who told me biases aren't a real problem. And all but 2 of the 11 authors are also white.

you’re likely correct that it would require the government to step in. All the ethics in the world won’t inspire most people. But a potential lawsuit gets ‘em every time.

This got me thinking. I rarely ever see braille on packaging. How frustrating this must be for blind folks. We’re lacking immense inclusivity in this area. We need to fix that.
Anyway, the makers of these dog treats do it right. Let it be a beacon for package designers everywhere. Good job, Dogsters.

🧵 Gratitude, Day 30 of 30:
This is it. My final entry for this series. And I’m grateful for the ride.
My favorite thing about this has been tapping into my emotional state of being.
Some days I feel grateful for everything. Some days the world is weighing on me so I feel wholly ungrateful. And that’s what I want to learn to avoid. Because, really, I have so many things to be grateful for. Even when things suck.
