At uni. I took a computer architecture and assembler classes. I understad how a bunch of and/or gates can allow "if" and "add" commands etc. And understand how a machine processes op codes and references to addresses in RAM.
When PSION reeased its series 5 with proprietary formats, while the hardware was Arm based, the excuse I was given for not documenting file formats as they had done for Series 3 was that it was all object oriented and there were no file formats.

if you cannot restore a backup of root volume to recreate it , then your backup strategy isn’t working. You should be able to clone your system disk. What matters is setting up the bootable structures so the CPU can find the boot file on it. (And update identity of new node with new name, ip address).

Generic question:
If you have a program that calculates pi to infirnity. Does the 8086 know to pass certain opcodes to the 8087 and wait for it to complete before continuing to next instruction? do both share the same registers?

His highness Emperor Trump has had a $1 coin created for him.
It may look like gold , but as with everything he does, it is fake.
Composition 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, 2% nickel, balance copper
As with everything related to the emperor it is a scam.
It costs USD $61 to buy 25* $1 or his coins, or $2.44 to buy a coin worth $1.

But Trump does get a lot of mileage out of the criminal endictment mugshot that was professionally done instead of letting police take it

Traditional conservative principles would never have supported anti-vaxxers and them overstaying their permit to be on Wellington and paralizing the city.
I would agree that on many policies, they may be well grounded, but they still have the MAGA style performative/theatricals/culture wars.
Poilievre railed against the Bank of Canada governor without understand what the bank does. Just to create artificial issue and get some attention.

when Reform split ftom original conservatives, they got helped by a group called « New American Century ». This is why Preston Manning had « radical » policies by Canadian standards. New American included folks like Rumsfeld ,Wolfovitz and Cheney. Harper realized he couldn’t win that way and mellowed the party by merging with what was left of conservatives. However with Poilievre they seem ti have realigned with MAGA.

depending on states, some do use inordinate amount fo water because they just draw cold water from river and pass it through evaporators and that water evaporates from heat taken out of data centre.
The water taking heat out of an aisle inside data centre to the outside cooling plant may be a closed loop, but it all depends on how they manage to get rid of all that heat by dumping it into environment. Some may draw water from river and dump hot water back into river.

Never ever stop once you have engaged a rail crossing. The barriers are designed to break to let someone out.
(In this case it appears the driver engaged crossing before barruiers started to go down, but he shoudl have never slowed donw/stopped.)

with advent of look pedals in 1986, (clip on) , the concept of taping shoes to pedal is long long gone. The only possible exception is the kilometre competition where the amount of power exerted by cyclist , especially from standing start , is enough to bend handlebars and frame. They go 0 to 60 very very fast.

Something done right: First 9 locos built by Stadler in Spain, but with canadian workers learning how to do it, and the remainder will have final assembly in Montréal.
Unclear: wherher Stadler assembly in Montréal will be done in existing VAi maintenace hall (upgraded) or if new facility will be built. Minister said "right here" while speaking inside the maintenance hall with old loco in background.

45 locos. Big question is whether they are replacing the 32 unreliable Siemens locos or just for the 2 remaining LRC trains and the couple of long distance trains not yet cut ? The only use of batteries is at central station where idle trains could run on battery instead of diesel. Huge weight to carry around instead of just plugging trains in at central station like they used to.

It is time for world leaders to signal to the US Cabinet and Congress that his temper tantrums from demential have reached a damaging level that cannot be allowed to continue.
The Overton window in his irrational behaviour must cease to move to normalise his behaviour.
We are past the stage where world leaders treat him with white gloves to make him feel comfortable and avoid temper tantrum.

2026-07-20 22:45:42 UTC

If I were Prime Minister, this is how I would respond to Trump's new tariffs:
I hope that the United States Cabinet and Congress will deal with the irrational emotional outbreaks and start to rebuild positive relations with former allies.
In considering import of Canadian aluminium to be a national security risk, it sends strong message that we are no longer allies. Congress needs to confirm in law whether this is what the United States policy is or whether this is result of dementia.

The mirror was demoed at some ice castle in Iceland when he benevolently lit up just the castle at night to impress the guests, but then focused mirror to try to fry some british spy out to disable mirror.
Curiious which international body could stop this.

Europe takes to digging tunnels like Americans do building interstates. Here, is there no tunnel industry any TBM needs to be imported from europe and politicians don't see tunnel projects as politically popular. They prefer highway bridges.
Am very curious if Alto will at least pitch many tunnels and show that digging tunnels is normal and not some out of ordinary exception to construction.
Rail freight in Europe is very weak. No standard automatic coupler across counrries.

Canada’s largest airports have already been somewhat privatized decades ago. Contract for their management given to friends of government. YVR Inc, GTAA. ADM are all corporations in charge if running their airport and fund uogrades. As a result, Toronto has some of highest fees in world. ADM was nearly bankrupt twice due to white elephant plans to rebuild Dorval and literally demolish Mirabel, à federal asset.

@npub1z7x…q5jf BTW, the "traffic signal priorioty" that Toronto added to the Fimch trams is nothing more than shifting left turn signal to end of cycle instead of start of cycle, so after waiting at red light, the trams can proceed without waiting for left turn cycle to end.
They hope to eventually have hardware to detect incoming trams and affect the car signals.

Original Order:
18 Park
18 Skyline
18 dining cars
29 Chateau
42 Manor
30 Coaches
18 baggage/crew dorm
So Via inherited a total of 71 Chateau+Manor. Not all were converted to electric heat. Some sold during 1990s, and since 2020, VIA started to canibalize its fleet for parts intead of having new parts made. So that they still have at least 56 is good. Though they had fewer.

North America’s economy is politically attached to cars (and steel/oil). Very hard for politicians in Canada and Ontario to fight to lower car addiction since that means job losses in key Ontario tidings. And very hard for Ottawa to fight to lower oil production for both Alberta politics and tax revenues. Car addiction is deeper than just consumers.
