Lots of negativity here today, which is both disheartening and disappointing.
I won't deny the difficulty in finding both—especially an agent—but both CAN BE done. All it takes is a little research, an understanding of what you want, and patience (and, for editors, money).

Yeah, I feel the same way. I never read long reviews for that reason. I also don't like them because they tend to spoil some of the story. Keep it short, and IMO keep it positive; if it can't be positive, at least be neutral.

Thank you! Granted, they're not super long—usually 2-4 paragraphs—and I write them while the book's still fresh in my mind. I sort of enjoy writing them, especially for the indie books. I know reviews are for readers, but with Indies, I know the author appreciates it, too. 😊

Nothing, save the feedback I've been asked for (as a beta reader). I've also written reviews for every book I've read in the last two years, including every indie book.

My initial outline for this book had many scenes being their own chapters. Now that I'm approaching the end, I've realized that some scenes can be combined with others to form a more focused chapter.
So, I just went through and updated the outline. I have 10 chapters left, including the epilogue.
We leave for Japan in eight days. 😬 🫣

AWS is experiencing a widespread outage, which is terrifying for a self-published author who sells exclusively on Amazon.
I can't log into my KDP page, or my author portal. I can't check my product pages on Amazon. Even Goodreads is down.
I know it will resolve itself, but in the meantime, it makes me incredibly uneasy. 😖
Anyone else experiencing this?

#WordWeavers 13Aug—On a scale from 1 to 10, how safe is your world?
That depends a bit on who you are, where you are, and when you are.
Wielders are less safe than non-Wielders (not everyone is okay with magic), and southern Vastrenar is more accepting of Wielders than its northern regions.
But in general:
–Before the end of book 3: 7/10
–During book 4: 5, maybe even 4/10
–By the end of book 4: hopefully 8/10 or higher

I've seen this happen on other social media sites. Mostly FB, and I've had an increasing number of emails to my author email address. This is the first time I've seen it on Mastodon, and it's distressing.
Like you said, it all starts the same way: a brief hello, asking about your work, and then asking if it's on Amazon or Goodreads. Then they try to sell you something, or leave a fake GR review written by AI.
As if a writer's life isn't hard enough. 😩

This "person" followed me as well. They introduced themselves the same way, and after a brief back and forth, started asking questions. Their first one: "I want to ask that how can one divert from his or her known genre."
I'm pretty sure a "bestselling author in the world" would know that without asking me.

Most people are capable of writing; thus, most people are persons who write.
But IMO, a writer is an artist. They use words to create, to evoke the senses, to stoke the imagination of readers everywhere.
An email can be interpreted one way, but a story... each reader finds something different that sticks with them. That's art. That's magic.
If you've written/are writing a story, you're a writer. Own it.

Anyway, this is as much a venting post as it is a warning to all other self-published authors. It seems that book “promoters” are getting more extreme with their methods of getting you to notice and use their services. Protect yourself and your IP, and don’t let anyone misrepresent your work.

I’m not the kind of author that moderates reviews. If someone wants to leave a negative review, that’s fine. That’s their opinion, and they’re entitled to it. But reviews that are riddled with inaccuracies are not something I’ll tolerate.
Fortunately this woman emailed me, so I had her contact info; if I didn’t, I would’ve had no choice but to leave a comment on the GR review itself. I hate when authors do that, but it’s not fair for potential readers to be led astray by false information.

BUT HERE’S THE KICKER: In her final email, she said, “Just so you know, I’m a beta/ARC reader, book promoter, and book trailer creator that helps authors get visibility before book launches, and to reach out to her if I wanted her support.”
REALLY!?! You wrote an inaccurate review for a book that’s not even published yet, and you want me to trust you with promoting said book?! GTFO of here.

I assumed it was an AI generated review based solely on the blurb, but I emailed her again to ask where she got the book. She confirmed she didn’t have a copy of it, and said that her review was based on her “general impressions” based on the blurb and “promotional material”, whatever that means. She never denied that her review was written by AI.
I asked her to remove the review, because I don’t want to give readers false information about the story. She said she would, and she has.

Not an hour later, I get a 5-star rating and “spoiler” review on GR for COC from this same woman.
She's not one of my ARC readers, and the book isn't published yet, so I'm already uneasy about this. But I read the review, and it’s… not accurate. The details (the “spoilers”) are skewed, perhaps not enough for the unassuming reader to notice, but definitely enough for THE AUTHOR to notice.

The strangest thing happened to me today.
(A thread, but TL;DR: beware of "book promoter" extreme tactics.)
I got an email from someone, subject: Inspired by your journey as an author. "Cool," I thought. So I opened it.
The sender said my book, Convergence of Connection, caught her attention, and asked if it was available on GR. My books are listed there, but you can't buy them there (obviously). I told her she could buy them on Amazon, and moved on with my morning.

#WordWeavers 1Jul—Which other medium besides writing would work best for your story and why?
There are times when I close my eyes and envision the scene as I write. In these moments, I write what the POV character sees, experiences, etc.
In this way, I think my stories would do well as a TV show. Some readers agree, saying they can almost see the story unfold in their mind's eye.
As for why, I write to immerse the reader in my story, and [fantasy] TV shows usually seek to do the same.

I absorb the emotions of my characters.
On one hand, I think it makes for a more gripping story for readers. On the other, when my characters experience strong emotions (especially ones like sorrow or loneliness), I feel them *deeply*.
Writing Convergence of Connection was challenging for this reason. I often had to take breaks while drafting it, to regulate myself. I endure, but it can slow me down.

I WANT to continue working on my WIP, but... I have two books coming out this month.
July 8–Mission Aboard the Longfin (my MG story)
July 22–Convergence of Connection (TWOTW book 3)
I'll have to spend some time getting announcements ready, then a day or two marketing for each. COC will take more effort than MATL, so I'm hoping I can be more productive in the first half of the month.

It went fairly well!
I managed to write just under 20k words, which is almost more than April and May combined. I feel good about that, considering July will be chaos (more on that tomorrow).
I ordered author copies of both books coming out in July, sent copies of the MG story to cousins/friends with kids around 10yo, and got a couple of ARC reviews for book 3 on GR already. A good month overall!

When I damn well say it is!
In seriousness, a piece of writing is done when I think it's the best it can be. At that point, I'll publish it and release it into the world.
That doesn't mean it doesn't have the occasional minor error. Finding those after publishing is annoying, but I can fix them without much ado. "Don't let perfect be the enemy of good," and all that.

WRITING: I wrote a few sweet, tender scenes. Nothing sexy, just those soft moments of affection. Those are my favorite to write. ❤️ I also shared a couple on Mastodon, which I don't usually do.
GARDENING: I managed to plant some veggies and herbs. There's something so calming about tending to a small garden, and with everything going on in the world, a little bit of calm is just what I need.

I'm so in love with this book.
This is the fourth quote I've noted, and I'm only halfway through it. I look forward to reading it each time I pick it up, and I'm already sad for when it will be over.
It has some of the most beautiful writing I've ever read. There's a mix of history, environmental awareness, and hypothetical science—all connected through the life of a raindrop.

25Jun—What do you like about #ScribesAndMakers? What could be better?
I like that it encourages me to think of other creative things in my life (mostly gardening these days).
Not every question is relevant to me, so I don't answer all the time. But nothing needs to be improved for my sake.
It might be interesting to have a theme each month. Like, in addition to the more generic/hypothetical questions, you could focus on gardening, pencil art, sculpting, etc. Just a thought.

Anyway, I'd love to write a women's historical fiction story about some forgotten important woman from an ancient civilization. Ancient Egypt was always an interest to me, but ancient Asian or Mayan would be tempting, too.
But I won't. As fascinating as I find those civilizations, I know those aren't my stories to tell.

Writing goals can be helpful... until they impact your creativity. Sometimes, the pressure of meeting them can overwhelm you, and when you don't hit them, it can dissuade you. Best to set low goals until you get into a habit.
But at least you're being creative in other ways! What do you do in film?

These days, I aim for 1,000 words/day on the days I write (which isn't every day). This year, I've averaged about 1,200/day, and have hit 2,000+ three times.
I do track my progress by word count/day, but I'm trying to be gentle with myself on the days I don't make that 1,000 goal. This year has been particularly challenging, especially with getting two books ready for release in July.
But that'll be behind me in 32 days, and I can finally dedicate most of my time to my WIP. I can't wait!

Back in 2021, I was still working, and had so much story lodged in my head, with so little time to get it out.
We had a local getaway planned, but we had just moved and couldn't find anyone to watch our cats. So my husband stayed home while I drove 1.5 hrs north, to the mountains, for my first solo writing retreat.
I don't recall the specifics by day, but I wrote almost 35k words in six days.

A few years ago, I sent my husband the first chapter of The Way of the Wielder (back when it was a different POV, actually). I was really proud of it, so I asked him, "Just read it and let me know what you think of the flow and stuff."
He sent it back ENTIRELY redlined, with comments on what he would change if he were writing it. 😑
For the sake of our marriage, he now doesn't get to read my books until they're published. 😅

You're right. I do know a handful of middle graders who have some kind of tablet, but I'm not sure how many are reading outside of their school work on it.
But I know some adults read MG stories as well. I guess that's mostly why I'm asking. What price does someone who reads that length of story anticipate paying?
The print price is $7.99, which I think is reasonable.

I do generally agree with this. However, there are a lot of self published authors who publish their work through Amazon (some exclusively, some not).
If someone is interested in buying books through Amazon, I always recommend buying books written by self published authors. Yes, Amazon takes a cut, but you're also supporting a small business (by supporting the author).

She seems alright at first, but then things get weird. Her smile's a bit too sweet. Her words too flattering. Her interest in you too earnest. Before you know it, you're involved in something dangerous, and can't escape.

It's tough to say.
Ultimately, I don't think one or two reviews makes a difference (unless they're from Kirkus or something). However, I *do* think the more reviews/ratings a book has, the better its sales are.
When I had fewer than 10 reviews on Amazon, sales were slow. Now that I have 18, sales have picked up a bit.
Whether that's the reviews, the marketing, or @npub12s2…9gr0 mentioning my book on his website, again it's tough to say.

I've never paid for a review. However, I’ve offered my book for free (to ARCs) in exchange for one. Of the 8 that took me up on that, only 1 left a review.
I’ve also used BookSirens (again for ARCs, although my book’s published). Technically, I guess I’m paying for that, because each time someone downloads it I get charged $2. So far, 10 have downloaded it, and 2 have left reviews.

I think, in this case, "grow" is meant to symbolize the growth of our society. Not economically, but grow into a better, healthier, more accepting nation.
I think it fits her—and what we see in her—well. But if you're looking for another word, perhaps "thrive" or "rise" would suffice.
Whatever word is used, it's a tall order—but one I think she can achieve.

Aw darn, I missed the poll. But I tend to read fantasy most.
I also write fantasy—romantic fantasy, to be specific. My debut novel (The Way of the Wielder) came out back in March, with several sequels and other stories to follow.
