TLDR
1. My definition of "P2P" or "Federated" is that if server A goes down, servers B and C can still talk to each other.
2. Bluesky/"Atmosphere" fails at this because Blacksky (B) utilizes Bluesky (A) to talk to me (C).
3. In order for Blacksky to avert this, they have to do something unreasonable and expensive.
4. Blacksky someday *will* do this, but will depend heavily on massively overworking Rudy and a few other people. This may someday fail.

This is why I believe Bluesky was never meant to be federated. To create a Bluesky "instance", like Blacksky is heroically attempting, you have to perfectly duplicate every server Bluesky runs. But Bluesky is a business operating at a loss by burning unlimited-for-now VC cash. That has always implied only a business with unlimited VC cash can create an instance. Blacksky is succeeding. The repeated lesson here is that a company, organization, computer program, or person who uses the privacy, environmental, and trust disaster sold as "generative AI" for one thing, can no longer be trusted for any thing. If it is tolerated for one thing, it will eventually be used for all things. If a program adds an optional "AI"-branded feature you *have* to stop using that program completely, because if (when) the company feels the use metrics are too low they will stop making it optional.

Now one *assumes* these buttons don't activate unless pressed, but there's a problem. First, the checkbox to disable "Gemini" in Messages itself only turned off an activate-on-select button. Second, on a phone— where "scroll" and "tap" are both taps— accidental activation of buttons is a part of life.
This happens to me again and again, with Google, with Copilot in VS Code, with everything. A company adds an "AI"-branded feature with an off switch, you turn it off, they later enable it anyway.

Related, consider the Android "Messages" app. This has checkbox settings for "Smart Reply"; two additional checkboxes for "suggestions" of stickers and "actions"; and a fourth checkbox, "Gemini in Messages", for explicitly turning off Gemini. I have turned off all of these. Despite this, this week I discovered that if I long-press or open ANY image in Messages, there are two buttons, "Remix" and "Create", which Google's documentation explicitly says network-sends the image to, quote, "Gemini".

Google Mail / "GMail" has no fewer than nine settings for "Smart Features and Personalization", e.g., Gemini. I have these all turned off in order to prevent Gemini ingesting my emails. To do this, you now have to opt out of benign machine-learning or even pattern-matching-based features, like sorting promotional emails from regular ones or spellcheck.
Despite this, as of today, Google is offering a Gemini smart compose feature on all my emails, despite me having turned off smart compose.

If it were my project i would ban the contributor. One line or not they are not following the DCO as written which this project requires. So either the DCO is violated, the DCO has a "you can do anything as long as it's through a hole in a sheet" exception for AI, or the DCO is not enforced at all, or most likely this crept up on OpenZFS and they have never thought about this and did not notice the claude line.

The thing is, my understanding is you have to use the tool in a particular way for it to actually create the committed-with header. For more complex uses I believe the header does not show up.

- I sign up for the free service.
- A couple years later, they say to continue with the free service you must now do something I don't want to, like pay monthly or agree to put my home address publicly on the Android store.
- I decline, and my account on the service is deleted.

I do think there is an interesting perspective where computer software based on deterministic execution of instructions *can* be aligned with the goals of a user but computer software based on a trained statistical model cannot, technically, be aligned with anything at all as there is inherently random behavior. My understanding is that Bitwarden and KeePassXC, the two open source password managers, are *both* using random code generators at this point, which is terrifying as those are the exact tools where a small error could have the largest negative impact, and also tools that once you've committed to using it you can't quickly back out if they enter a code quality decline

Based on this visualizer I issue you a challenge.
Bluesky's post limits work like this: You can fit 3000 bytes OR 300 graphemes, whichever is less. I thought at first that hitting the byte limit would be nigh impossible, but it turns out to be pretty easy with emoji: 🤷🏾‍♀️ is 1 grapheme but 17! bytes, thanks to stringing an emoji, a skintone, a gender, and two ZWJs.
My challenge: Can you hit the 3000 byte limit, without hitting the 300 grapheme limit, using only *natural human text*, any language?

In the docs, ByteStream has a generic argument. However the generic argument's meaning is not documented (it's just "S"). The worst/most Ruby-like thing about Rocket is when you return a value from a Route function, you just kinda return… whatever datatype you want, and Rocket figures it out.
Unless it doesn't, and you have *no* idea what to return.
For a string, you return a String.

By the way, one other thing I've never figured out about the "mine a block" race. Imagine two miners in New Zealand and Spain by coincidence mine a valid block within 0.04 seconds of each other. Due to the speed of light, neither could have known about each other's block at the time they mined the block, but transmission speeds and clock disagreements would make it almost impossible to prove which happened "first". How does the network decide which miner wins the next-block race?

To be clear, my reason for pondering these things: I believe the total elimination of Bitcoin from the planet is a necessary prerequisite for cryptocurrency becoming a remotely useful or good thing. I'd like to see Bitcoin eliminated from the planet. However, I believe capitalism will always find a way to do the worst possible thing. So *if* there's a path to BTC surviving and continuing to do at least some harm, I assume BTC will find it. I'm trying to see if I can identify that path first.

To elaborate on those two points:
- My understanding of BTC is that there is a "race" element, you need to not just compute hashes but compute them *faster* than your competing miners. If accurate, this means the price of mining could naturally adjust itself downward.
- Bitcoin was always designed for "mining" rewards to be gradually replaced with transaction-processing fees. The number we really want is "cost to add block to chain" / "revenue to add block to chain". Mining rewards are trivia

I've long believed Bitcoin is impossible to "kill" but a possibility that didn't occur to me is mining a bitcoin block could start to cost more than one acquires from mining a bitcoin block. And the compute cost of making a block *does* increase w/ time.

Amusingly, I did not participate in the Rust Developers Survey this year because there was a question about which RFCs are the most important to you and then I spent the rest of the evening reading RFCs and forgot to finish the survey

I dunno, maybe uv really is objectively better than pdm. A friend showed me pdm and I was like "yeah, this is good, this is better than just using requirements.txt… I will use nothing else forever". The only other thing I've tried was Poetry because i thought it would be cross compatible with pdm (it isn't, and I don't think I liked it as much

Hrrrmm… kinda worried about the implications of what it says for pdm that that python developers survey considered Poetry significant enough to include under virtualenv/dependency management tools but not pdm.

If computers were just bad, that would be more tolerable to me I think. It's the fact that computers start off good and get worse over time. We know things could be better. Software companies *make us know* they're capable of making usable stuff before they go and break it.

Firefox recently updated with an uglier font into the url bar and I was like "why'd they do that", but now I'm starting to notice this same font I think in certain other parts of Android, the clock bar, the copy/paste menu. I don't like it. I can't tell if I'm imagining it.
Silent software updates are literally gaslighting! I think something changed, I can't tell if something changed, I'm doubting my own perceptions and mental capability

It is a noir story in a shitty SoCal high school. It's so weird and so incredible, the structure is so interesting and twisty, the cinematography makes ordinary objects cryptic and beautiful, it moves so quickly from "this makes no sense" to "this makes so much sense"

This is why—although, now Blacksky is letting me "see through" Bluesky's worst moderation decisions, I'm glad, because Bluesky's moderation is weird and arbitrary—I think it's a downside of the network, and Mastodon made the right decision not offering this feature. Fediverse defederation forces a degree of soft group consensus on moderation: it's possible to say "if you're talking to X, I don't want to talk to *you*". On Bluesky we are all ghosts walking through walls and this can't be enforced
