We do not have the crude oil here. We need crude for byproducts to make fertilizer, and many other products. Our refineries are only geared to process crude because we ran out of the sweet stuff before fracking was developed. Apparently, building new refineries, to process what we have here, is very expensive and difficult to accomplish due to regulations. They need our oil and we need theirs. Hence the global trade back and forth.
