Threads saying the quiet part out aloud. They never cared about the Fediverse. It was a good way to get people to sign up and cheer them on. This is a typical Meta bait and switch strategy. Start open or promise open and then switch to their proprietary services. Facebook used to have an RSS feed and used to support the ActivityStreams and then one day it didn’t.
Twitter and YouTube killed their RSS feeds when they got scale.

It was nice seeing two friends listening live with me to the show tonight. #co-listening

all new ideas and concepts take time to adopt. It's only in hindsight does it seem obvious. Unless we start to simplify the message to creators, production companies and eventually consumers about the benefits of Podcasting 2.0 or Podcasting 3.0 - we will forever be trying to sell an Elephant. Tune.FM is an interesting new company. It compares to Wavlake and LNBeats. They also use a micropayment system based on a platform called Hedera Hash???
They use JAM Tokens for direct to musician payments from fans. They use gamification, social networking plus rewards.
This is worth reading. We have many similar ideas for TrueFans. i.e fans pay creators but also creators can pay fans.

2/3 - Earlier this week we also added Import/Export for OPML.
The 'Open' (subscription list) exchange format. We were surprised how other podcasting apps implemented OPML differently.
The goods news is we support all OPML formats from Apple, Pocket Casts, OverCast etc.
Sadly many apps only allow OPML import but don't do OPML export! Why?
We also allow you to export Podrolls, Publisher lists as well as Playlists. using the Podcasting 2.0 'RemoteItem' XML format.

We just added our new 'Folder View' to TrueFans. So now you can quickly switch between list view, card view and now folder view. We will roll out this view to the homepage and other pages.
You can also choose the default view you want when you open the app in your user settings.

2/2 - Next up we are adding folders as a third way to view podcast episodes. You already have a list view or card view and now we will add a folder view. You can set the default view in your user settings.
We are going to extend the folder view option to the homepage and your library.
We are also going to extend OPML to include your listening metadata (Time Listened, Percent Completed and Value Paid) for each podcast.

1/2 - X/Twitter Integration & Gamification now costs $10K for their Enterprise V2 API follower count access!!!
18 months ago we created and tested a very cool gamification feature in TrueFans.
We enabled users to connect their X accounts to TrueFans via OAuth and back then using only their Basic V2 API ($100 p/m), we could show all their X followers inside their TrueFans profile page along with an invite button next to each follower. #deadtwitter

looking at the issue now. We only tick green of the Alby API via BatcMode gives us a confirmed payment. We have tested LNAddress and LNURLP but do not have a full deployment yet. I sent a second payment in a comment. Did you get that?

Here is the exact same post of my activity listening to Podnews via TrueFans.social/samsethi
Every user and every podcast on TrueFans can be followed on TrueFans.social so that when they auto-post new activity you get notified.
This is exactly what we have just done on X and if BlueSky's Ouath was easier to implement we would have done that today too. But later this week we will enable auto-posting to BlueSky.

Auto-Post Your Activities to X
Today we have integrated sending all TrueFans user activities to X.
In your user settings you enter your Twitter account and validate the account via OAuth.
Then in your user settings you pick the Activity verbs you wanted posted.
For example, simply listen to your podcasts or comment on an episode and we will post those activities for you.

I only want to follow a dozen or so people on social media. I have reached an age where I know the good people to follow and don't need the rest of the noise. How do I create a feed of only those people? How do I stop irrelevant RT. Is this possible in Mastodon? I left X because Elon removed the ability to block the people I previously blocked and even though I blocked him he keeps injecting himself into my X feed. So now I just want to follow a few smart people who I can learn from. How?

pls use Fountain. TrueFans is not for you. We tried being an open wallet (money in/out) and scam users simply withdrew the §5k sats we gave them when onboarding to another lightning wallet. So we stopped users from withdrawing SATs. We will allow them to add SATs from another wallet soon. If a podcast creator has a wallet we make the payment instantly from our Alby Hub. If they don't have a wallet we give them a TrueFans wallet and allow them to withdraw monies

wow scam? We are trying to find a solution. So all the websites that sell tokens for access to content are scams? I buy Audible books with credits/tokens. I pay Amazon $7.99 a mont for my Audible credit. I can exchange my credit for a book. Amazon then pay the book publisher I assume as a separate transaction but I guess yo might call that a scam???

wrong. We take $10 from the user and we give them virtual SATs. We could/will call them TureFans Tokens. The user is buying Tokens not SATs. We top up our Alby Hub using our own money. We then see a user want to pay a podcaster with Virtual SATs or TureFans Tokens. We adjust their virtual wallet. This is purely a database accounting challenge. We then make a separate TrueFans Alby Hub payment over lightning to the wallet address. so the two parts are not connected.

We have by-passed the KYC nonsense with one click top up via Stripe.
Our wallet is free. No end consumer will ever need an Alby Hub. That I agree is crazy. TrueFans as a business will pay for our Alby Hub.
We use it as a payment solution. We manage the virtual wallets in our app.
But we make payments from our Alby Hub over lightning to any other creators wallet.

Good luck selling Strike, Invoices, Bolt 12, NWC, Nostr, KYC, UMA and LNURL to the mass market.
I agree Programmable Money using Lightning + SATs is the future but its the underlying technology to enable splits, wallet switching and reverse SATs. etc.

all Fediverse apps need to support lightning wallets and offer SAT micropayments. Many podcasting 2.0 apps like TrueFans.fm give all new users a lightning wallet and have enabled one click top up for wallets via Stripe.
For marketplaces like this to exist they need to build a wallet and allow users to pay in either SATs or Fiat Currencies. The Fediverse like the Web needs a micropayment system. A boost with 10 SATs means more than just a comment. NOSTR has built support for Bitcoin SATs

Love the concept of using the Fediverse as a platform for discovery of many different types of content.
TrueFans is building an AP integration to help discover podcasts. But the irony at the end. Come to the walled garden of Apple to download Mammoth. And he can’t see the irony of that.
Stop using closed proprietary App Stores and stop using platforms like iOS - use the open web to build PWAs.Don’t advocate for open standards and then use closed platforms!

we currently track Streaming SATs every second. We need to do this with Wallet Switching (VTS). So when a live or recorded show plays a music track, we need to know the exact second this happens in order to switch payments.
The other use case where per second tracking and payments needs to occur are with boosting comments on a live show so the host gets the information in a timely manner.
However a boost to a recorded show does not have to be as timely. It could be sent later.

As TrueFans aligns more with the Fediverse I wonder if we rename Boostagrams to Quotes. We already have Boosts. Or do we need Boosts, Quotes and Boostagrams. So a Quote is a comment without SATs payment. I am not a fan of NOSTR so I wont be using terms like Zaps.

agree lets hope that happens and if not TrueFans then Fountain, Podverse, PodcastGuru etc. What I am trying to grapple with is how do we change the podcasters mentality. That can only happen if users first understand V4V and which wallet to use and why SATs and not fiat etc. Oh well happy Friday!

that is great and admire you for that but I need to turn TrueFans into a sustainable business or I need to move on and find another project. Taking a risk to start a business that eventually brings a return is what every entrepreneur risks with no guarantees but it's not a passion project for me while I do another job to pay the bills. I am 100% focused on TrueFans.

I too have volunteered to get a wallet and pay millions of sats. I too have spent 2+ years promoting and building podcasting 2.0
I am simply trying to get a conversation going and asking this group about how can we (collectively) can get more people to use wallets, understand sats and thus make it more rewarding for podcasters and artists. Yes I need TrueFans to generate a revenue. 2 years+ of no income following the dream of Podcasting 2.0 is not sustainable.

V4V is a voluntary payment but this is not a sustainable model for podcasters or music artists. Busking or begging for money is not a sustainable model. We need to have three models - free interrupted with adverts, ad free model with subscriptions and a third way where you pay only for what you listen too.
I am a massive advocate of V4V but lets be honest its not getting mass adoption because the mainstream sees no value in it. Why pay for the same free podcast on Apple?

1/3 - On this weeks Podnews Weekly Review I had another rant about Apple podcasts. Unfortunately it didn't make the editors cut. So here why I think Apple Podcasts is the reason podcasting is a second class digital product.
We are all prepared to pay for music, films, audiobooks etc. and in the UK we also have to buy a TV/Radio license but for some reason people don't expect to pay for podcasts and I think the reason is 100% Apple's fault. #podcasting

On TrueFans you top up your wallet with $10 we then put that in your TrueFans wallet. Then when the payments are internal between TrueFan wallets we manage that for you. All external payments are over lightning. If you are a podcaster and accumulate $20's worth of SATs we will let you make a withdrawal via Stripe.

I think what Russell is describing is that each host becomes a payment node and that Truefans sends a payment to the PodToo node from our Alby node and then PodToo makes the required payment to their hosted podcasters. If honest I don't like this model as we have removed the P2P direct nature of the payments from the listener's wallet to the podcaster's wallet. This will also make Value Time Payments extremely complex.

Step1: We are already working with Alby and have setup our Alby Hub. We are opening 3 channels (one public). Our current Alby API configuration will work once we change the node addr. We already have virtual accounts in TrueFans. So similar to the model Russell describes. We will onboard new users with a virtual account (this is much better for us) and we will track their transactions and then make lightning payments to podcasters from our node.

At the moment all hosts claim to support the medium tag. However I would like a way to differentiate hosts who support more than medium=podcast. For example RSSBlue supports medium=music and Podhome supports medium=courses. I wonder how we can so this distinction in the podcastindex host/app page.

I agree asking hosts to add even more medium tags may be overly hopeful. Currently we look for VTS items in the feed and then add the musicast category. Thats the best/only option.

Should podcasts like Mixtapes from Wavlake and Musicasts like Boostagram Ball be tagged medium=music instead of medium=podcast -or do we need another attribute medium=musicast. It would greatly help apps like TrueFans. https://truefans.fm/music
And when I look at which hosts support the Medium tag there are 47+ but only a handful support more than medium=podcast. We need a better way to show which hosts are supporting medium= music, audiobooks, video etc. /cc @npub1fmx…wp74 @npub1rcn…dw4h.

Podcasting 2.0 was meant to mirror Web 2.0 (which was 1st coined in 1999 by Darcy DiNucci over 25 yrs ago) It was later popularized by O'Reilly Media during the Web 2.0 Conference in 2004.
I think podcasting missed a marketing trick. It should have been called Podcasting 3 to mirror Web 3. Web 3 characteristics are data portability, decentralisation, ownership and monetisation.
I believe RSS has all of these traits today. Often people confuse RSS 2.0 and Podcasting 2.0 - should it change?
