Grew up in a small town when the only time you had to lock your doors was August, because otherwise people would leave zucchini for you.

The old plates. When the NWT split into the NWT and Nunavut both territories wanted the old Polar Bear plates. Truthfully Nunavut had a much better claim as we have a more robust population of Polar Bears, throughout more of the area. But after a few years of both having the PB plates Nunavut decided to run a contest for new plates and this is what came of it.
We’ve now returned to PB plates although a different design of them. Somewhere I have NWT and Nunavut original PB plates. #Nunavut

It’s past the time for Canada to start cutting as many ties with the US as humanly possible. No more F-35s. Ditch the autopact and make one with Asia, Africa and Europe. Make individual trade deals with some states perhaps and treat those more like sovereign countries. Treat the US like the fascist country it has become.
There’s no doubt that not having the US in NATO weakens it, but if they’re going to act like the enemy maybe NATO would be better off.

Stayed at the cabin last night. I brought heating fuel out as we were getting low. My wife is in Pond Inlet for Nunavut Quest as she’s on the committee. So I thought there was no point in going back home. Very quiet, took the battery out of the clock because the ticking was annoying me.
Took another tank of heating fuel out tonight but I’ll head home soon. Pretty sky tonight. #CabinLife #Nunavut

It’s been both a wonderfully delightful day and a very challenging one.
At noon my daughter and son-in-law came home with our new granddaughter. She is a delight. And warms this heart.
But at three my daughter ended up at the health centre, in pain. By four she was on an IV. Fever and low blood pressure.
She’s been medivac’d to Iqaluit. The flight arrived about a half hour ago and she’s at the hospital now. And feeling better.
My DIL will follow tomorrow on the sked flight as an escort.

My grandfather was in a highland regiment in the Great War, the 16th Canadian Scottish.
In the Great War four men from that battalion earned the Victoria Cross, for valour. One, James Richardson, was one of the battalion’s pipers.
Towards the end of the Somme offensive in 1916 the 16th was tasked with capturing a section of German frontline known as Regina Trench.

Today is the official return of the Sun but it will be another week before we see it in town, because of the lay of the land.
Today we will see the sunlight shining on the top of the mountain and each day it will shine lower and lower.
If I rode out to Admiralty Inlet with a clear view of the southern horizon I could watch it peek out. When I first came here we’d drive up to the old Nanisivik airport to see it on the 30th.
But I’m more than patient to wait until the sixth to see it now.

My FIL has been down in Ottawa on medical, back today. While he was away Leah and a niece have been painting the in-laws’ cabin while our niece’s partner and I put down new flooring. It’s been a struggle as we’ve had one generator issue after another. But they now seem to be sorted. Lots of cutting and the mitre saw was up at my cabin as it can handle the electrical load. So I walked back and forth the 100m or so all night. The wind was bitter but the Arqsarniit danced all night. #CabinLife

Jumping back in here for a couple of seconds because I thought you might want to see a bit of last nights arqsarnitt (aurora) #NorthernLights #Aurora #auroraborealis #Nunavut

A few arqsarniit (aurora) out tonight. So I set up a time lapse. Good looks at a nice Red Fox on the way home.
Been feeling hermitish lately. I just might withdraw from social media for a bit.

Short time lapse from last night. Missed much of the big display. Most of the activity was south of us when I went out there. Short because I wasn't prepared with batteries etc. #Nunavut #AuroraBorealis #NorthernLights #Aurora #TimeLapse

I’m just being a smart ass. If my sister-in-law and her Scottish partner ever tie the knot, probably.

I’m of Irish and Ukrainian descent, but my grandfather fought a war wearing one of these, so I wear it on Remembrance Day. Well other times as well. #RemembranceDay

Made some polar bear deterrents today. Polar bears can get into cabins by standing on their hind legs and pushing windows (or doors) with their forepaws. #cabinLife #Nunavut

“I love the smell of onions and mustard in the morning. You know, one time we had a ICE squad sandwiched for twelve hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn’t find one of ’em, not one stinkin’ masked Brownshirt. The smell, you know, the condiment smell, the whole street. Smelled like…victory.” - Lt. Col. A. N. Tifa
