It's eye-watering stupid how politicians in @npub1m96…ag4y and #EU parliament - in a time when there's big opportunity to forge more unity in our Union, and (re)gain people's #Trust - continue to pursue deep #dystopia against the #People's will over and over and over again. It is embarassing and shameful, and should be criminal.

Is there any prior experience, I wonder, of open social networks where free culture thrives, and the socio-cultural impact that introduction of monetization schemes has on such environments?
I'm quite worried about how such introduction for fedi may create monetary incentives that attract people for all the wrong reasons, and in ways that harm the current culture of fedi, which sets it apart from mainstream corporate social media.

I wonder what your thoughts are regarding the sustainability model of #Datastar they came up with.
- They founded a non-profit for custodianship.
- Their Datastar library is fully self-contained, considered feature-complete. Simple, concise code, available to anyone.
- This library contains a plugin mechanism. Any added feature is an extension.
- Anyone can build/offer plugins. Datastar has free + paid ones.
That is not an open core model exactly, isn't it? Musing 🤔

Btw, the event-based approach is also what attracted me to Datastar. One of the devs who works in gaming (hence focus on performance and intermediate UI) is using a bootstrap for both hobby and work that is event-sourced and has NATS and SQLite on the back-end by default.
More generally it is interesting to consider event-driven architecture e.g. for the collaborative social web i.e. fediverse.
I'm looking for simple tech to experiment with that a bit :)

hey, this is very interesting. The old VB UI in a new web jacket. I just tooted about the Rube Goldberg machine that is modern web dev, and in some ways I was more empowered at the start of my career in 1997 with Visual Basic.

The issue I see with the Object Links FEP is that it boils down to: "If I know you adhere to the FEP, now I know to apply special logic to as:Link". May work well if we only do (micro)blogging. Is it a good general mechanism for a heterogeneous interoperable social web?
I am thinking more of: "Use existing open standards". Web annotations comes to mind. Specifically an annotation motivatedBy linking.

What works very well is making comparisons to the offline world. Here we are a 'single-threaded' individual that walks their own timeline, who enters a global square when there is a need and just as seamlessly weaves into different social contexts where other social networking use cases play out, for different audiences.
This approach is what Social experience design or #SX explores for patterns & practices of its design method.

Weird. You edited the toot and changed 'index' to 'feed' in the fedi handle to 404 media.
So I received a mastodon 'edited a post' notification that in the display text reflects that. However when I hover over that with my mouse it still points to the 'index' handle, and same when replying.
'Open original page' shows everything as I'd expected it to be.

#SocialMedia is not #SocialNetworking but a particular subset thereof. I personally reserve it exclusively for the corporate #BigTech variant, because people have such strong associations. "Socials" and social media big techz.
The kind "that leads us to the complete unraveling of the fabric of #society and wars" to use the same ominous words of Tristan Harris, formerly at #Google as #Ethics adviser, in 2019 when he explained the new strategic direction for the Center of #HumaneTechnology to me.

Oh, that is cool. I refer to him a lot these days, mostly related to fediverse installed base and open social stacks built on next-gen social web technology.
How current approach ensures we build a technosphere, and most of the 'social connecting layer' to real people and day-to-day human activity is for people to figure out as the tech is dumped into society.
How to do better is part of raison d'être of the social coding movement, which introduces the new IT field of SX.

Now image the situation where the popularity of the #FOSS project grew unnoticed, and the expectation of "hobby project" was never well conveyed.
Even the maintainer at this point considers the project "more than hobby". They want to keep working in the way that motivated them to start, despite people demanding differently. They still want #JoyOfCoding and to build what they want, thus decide to retain full control of contributions.
The label #BDFL is slammed broadly about in harsh criticism.

Someone starts a new #FOSS project as a hobby activity. "No one bossing me around like at work, just having fun, do as I wish." they write in the README.
After some time the project starts to get noticed, people request new features, and some Pull Requests are contributed and merged. There's a good vibe with similarly interested devs.
One year later. An unhappy community has formed. People complain about the #BDFL and harsh words circle the social channels.
Is the label of "BDFL" justified?

It is a pity that #Peertube has never been well integrated with #Microblogging. The primary way we become aware of a #video is when someone drops the URL in a toot, and we open it in a separate tab. We watch while not logged into the particular @npub17gp…7p4g instance, thus not giving likes and having interesting discussions in the comments section.
Same is true for #Pixelfed and #Mobilizon etc.
While organically building my social graph for years, this stuff just doesn't reach my timeline mostly.

Check out @npub1p9l…l05x on #SocialHub with a proposal to work on #ActivityPub #C2S, the client-to-server Social API part of the #W3C Recommendation.
The Social API didn't get much uptake on the #Fediverse where generally the #Mastodon API is used (and abused) for client/server communication.
It is not because the Social API isn't good, just that no one ever did the legwork to mature this part of the spec.
