@nprofile…ggeh patreon and similar does seem like the least-bad route currently. YouTube sucks in a great many ways, I can only manage to do anything with it with severe ad blocks - not because I don’t want those making the videos to be supported but because it’s functionally near impossible for to get around the place otherwise.
Man I miss mid-late-90s internet.

- “classic”

To basically anything more than 3 gen back. So PS3 won’t be retro until PS6 comes out for example.

It’s done! All my CDs and DVDs all ripped, converted, and on a media server. Much physical space cleared! All of music and movies much easier to access than on actual disc. Lovely stuff. The external dvd drive can finally rest back in storage.

@nprofile…e92q OnlyOffice can be a good off-ramp to wean someone off MS Office. Looks damn near the same, has reportedly actually slightly better file compatibility with MS docs than Libre Office (YMMV). Exists on Windows and Linux, so if it takes they could have their nice free (for personal use, it’s not FOSS I fear) Office suite on an exciting new Linux install down the road 😉

@nprofile…e92q I did add my pre-immich stuff. It's self-hosted so just made sure my existing archive drive was mounted for its Docker image and away it goes.
Immich does a great job of face recognition, processing metadata, and making that all easily searchable and easy to work with.
It took my laptop a few days for Immich to process a roughly 400gb existing archive, but once done it's been plain sailing.

@nprofile…e92q @nprofile…npc0 Installing on parents devices is genuinely high praise. I’ll pop it back on my list of options! My iPhone 13 has a few years in it yet, no plans to replace the hardware until I need to but if graphene remains I can see me picking up a compatible refurbed Pixel and giving it a spin ^_^

@nprofile…ml9f It’s shouting into the wind, I appreciate, but the simple rule should be that any *actual* journalist just shouldn’t use AI. At all. Ever. At least not for anything relating to an article.
I remember being at uni in 2000 and watching the journalism course student and dreading for the state of News once they were in charge. Now they are, and I was right to worry.

@nprofile…e92q @nprofile…npc0 A pixel 7 pro will be plenty powerful enough for general usage for a good few years yet. Graphene does look interesting to me but I’m at a point in life that I need a stable system. I don’t have the luxury of rolling an alternative ROM and spending the evening tinkering to resolve some oddball issue (as much as a genuinely used to enjoy doing so).
Would love to see a viable alternative shake up Google and Apple.

@nprofile…e92q @nprofile…npc0 as long as AOSP exists a lot of niche devices will be OK, even if they roll without formal Play Store support.
But it’s troubling nonetheless. I’m on iOS currently (no loyalty to it) but don’t like where it’s going. Not keen on where Android is going. But, realistically, I do “need” my banking app among other things and it’s a real gamble for how that works on degoogled forks or Linux alts via Waydroid.
Interesting times for sure.. 😔

@nprofile…wtal Batocera has been great when I’ve played with it in the past. It’s perhaps a tiny bit fiddly to get set up (a few nuances really need you to SSH in or get command line up) but a lot really just does work “out of the box”.

@nprofile…tlrx depends on what we mean by crash maybe. I’ve had Windows crash plenty of times, Linux less so (purely in my experience, not meaning to discount yours). I’ve found Linux recovers well after a crash too, generally a quick reboot and I’m back on the go. Rare though, mostly had crashes as it turned out my SSD was failing.
