When I graduated from high school my very first job was at a zoo. One morning, right before we opened, the only gorilla we had, died from old age.
The gorilla was one of their most popular attractions by far, and they couldn't afford to go without one. So, the zoo owner asked me if I'd wear a gorilla suit for an extra $100 a day, if I'd pretend to be the gorilla, until the zoo could get another one.
I said, “Sure why not.” A $100 dollars extra a day was a lot of money back then. It didn't take long for me to get the hang of it and I quickly became the most popular attraction at the zoo. People from all over the world came to see the gorilla.
About a month in, the excitement started to wear off. So, to get the people's attention back, I decided to climb over the enclosure and hang from a rope above the lions' den.
A large crowd of people gathered watching the spectacle in shock and awe. Suddenly, I lost my grip and fell to the floor of the lion's den. I started screaming "HELP!! HELP!!!" Suddenly, a lion pounced on me and said, "SHUT-UP dude, you're going to get both of us fired.”

A family took their elderly mother to a nursing home and left her there, hoping she will be well cared for.
The next morning, the nurses bathed her, and fed her a delicious breakfast, and set her in a chair next to a window.
She seemed fine at first, but after awhile she slowly started to lean over sideways in her chair.
Two attentive nurses immediately rushed to catch her, and straightened her up.
Again, she seemed fine, but after awhile she started to tilt to the other side. The nurses rushed back, and once more straightened her back upright.
This went on all morning. Later the family arrived to see how their mother was adjusting to her new home.
"So, mom, how is it here? Are they treating you all right?" They asked.
"Pretty nice," she replied. "Except they won't let you fart."

It was Saturday night, and the preacher still hadn’t come up with a sermon for Sunday morning.
Around 9:00 p.m., he finally turned to his wife and said, “I’ve got it! Tomorrow, I’m preaching about horseback riding!”
She raised an eyebrow. “Horseback riding? Don’t be ridiculous! You can’t preach about that.”
“Well,” he shrugged, “I’ve covered just about every other topic I can think of, so this will have to do.”
The next morning, as they drove to church, his wife shook her head. “I still can’t believe you’re going through with this. If you’re really going to preach about horseback riding, I’m just going to stay in the car.”
“Suit yourself,” he said, and she did just that.
But as he stepped into the pulpit, inspiration struck, and instead of preaching about horseback riding, he delivered a fiery sermon on sex—one that had the entire congregation hanging on his every word.
After the service, as people exited the church, a few members noticed his wife still sitting in the car and walked over.
“You missed it!” one of them said. “That was the best sermon your husband has ever given!”
She scoffed. “Oh, please. What does he know about it? He talks a big game, but he’s only tried it twice—once before we were married and once after. And both times, he fell off!”

I always wanted a pair of authentic Texas cowboy boots.

My brother Darren, grew up with a terrible stutter. After highschool he was looking for a job when he spotted an ad for a door-to-door Bible salesman.
So he suited up and headed into town.
He walked into the publisher's office and said,

The hiring manager raised an eyebrow.
"Sorry, Darren... I'm not sure this is the right job for you."

Yesterday I was using the public bathroom standing at the urinal when my pee went in several different directions. Up the wall, down my leg, in my boots and all over the guy standing at the urinal next to me.
Embarrassed, I apologized and quickly left. I drove straight to my doctor's office and demanded that they see me right away.
They immediately took me back, and after my examination, the Doctor said, “Extraordinary! I've never seen anything like that.
“Holes man! You’ve got holes in your penis, that’s why you’re urinating everywhere.”
Shocked, I asked him what am I supposed to do? How can I live life like this?
He reassured me.
“Don't worry he said, this is the address and phone number of my sister, she’ll be able to help you.”
“Oh is she a special surgeon or something?” I asked.
“No,” he said, “She plays the clarinet for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, she’ll show you where to put your fingers.”

I walked into the pharmacy and wandered up and down the aisles. The sales girl noticed me, and asked if she could help me.
I said, "Yes, I'm looking for a box of tampons for my wife.
She directed me down to the correct area.
A few minutes later, I put a bag of cotton balls and a ball of string on the counter.
Confused, she said, "Sir, I thought you were looking for some tampons for your wife?
I said, " You see, it's like this, yesterday, I sent my wife to the store to get me a carton of cigarettes, and she came back with a tin of tobacco and some rolling papers.
I figured if I have to roll my own, so does she.

I don't usually go to strip clubs, but last night I found myself in a peculiar situation at a buddies bachelor party. One of the guys had a $20 bill, and when the dancer came over, he licked it and stuck it to her butt cheek. Not to be out done, another friend pulled out a $50, called her back, licked it, and stuck it to her other butt cheek!
Then, a third friend pulled out a $100, and I was getting nervous, but thankfully he just did the same thing, and stuck it on her cheek.
Then, the stripper suddenly raced over to me, wanting me to outdo the hundred.
I was so embarrassed, everyone was watching me. My heart was pounding and my mind was racing. What could I do I thought?
Then, my instinct kicked in,
so I pulled out
my ATM card, swiped it down the crack, grabbed the $170, and left.

This morning I was stuck in a traffic jam on the highway outside of St Paul, Minnesota

A Venezuelan general and his army were patrolling through a semi-mountainous terrain close to where President Maduro was hiding.
Suddenly, over one of the hill, they heard a voice.
"One American soldier can take out 10 Venezuelan soldiers!"

A psychiatrist at a mental hospital decided to take his democrat patients to a Football game.
For weeks leading up to it, he trained them carefully, teaching simple commands to keep everything running smoothly.
On game day, everything was perfect.
When the national anthem started, the doctor shouted,
"Up, Nuts!" and all the democrats stood proudly.
When it ended, he called,

I was just in the grocery store checkout line with my wife. I was looking at how good the steaks looked going up the conveyor belt for the Mexican couple with a small child in front of us. When the cashier finished ringing them up she said, "That will be $202.00." The guy shuffled through a stack of cards about an inch thick, and put it in the machine. "Declined," she said. Then the woman came over, got on her phone, push several buttons, and shuffled through another stack of cards she had.
Then I saw their total went down to $165.00. I was thinking to myself, what the heck just happened. So, I was looking at the screen and I saw a WIC credit for $35.00. That's when I realized, I just paid for those steaks for those people, while my wife and I had hotdogs in our cart.
Now, I know WIC doesn't cover steaks, but had they had not bought steaks, their own money would have covered their bill without the need of WIC.
The whole damn welfare system is a joke.

I've been pretending to be deaf for years, so I wouldn't have to listen to my wife.
Well, she found out, and filed for a divorce.
According to the divorce papers my wife said, "Twiggy hasn't said a word to me in the last ten years of marriage! To communicate with him, I spent two years learning sign language.
As soon as I started succeeding, communicating with him in sign language, Twiggy started having vision problems and signaled to me that he is having a hard time seeing.”

I thought and I thought, and I just couldn't remember the name. Finally I said, "What is the name of that flower you give to someone you love? You know, the one that that's red and has thorns."

President-elect Trump wants the United States to buy Greenland. In fact, Trump wanted the United States to buy Greenland during his first term as President of the United States. Trump still wants to buy Greenland.
There has been much speculation on why Trump wants Greenland. Some think it’s about minerals. Attorney Robert Barnes speculated that Trump wants to protect US Shipping lanes; ergo, wanting the United States to purchase Greenland, taking control of the Panama Canal and remarks about making Canada the 51st State.
Trump is not the first to see Greenland’s value. Eighty years ago, a Danish diplomat made a move that changed its fate.
The film The Good Traitor tells the story of the Danish ambassador to America, Henrik Kauffmann, and his actions when the Nazis invaded his country.
The Good Traitor was my introduction to Kauffmann; there are scant English-language resources available on Kauffmann, namely, Defiant Diplomacy: Henrik Kauffmann, Denmark, and the United States in World War II and the Cold War, 1939-1958.
When the Nazis invaded Denmark on April 9th, 1940, Kauffmann had a problem: the Danish government had cooperated with the Nazis; therefore, any instructions Copenhagen gave Kauffmann were really instructions coming from the Nazis. If Kauffmann didn’t obey the puppet government, he would be guilty of treason because a government cooperating with the Nazis was, in political reality, still a functioning, geopolitical government.
Kauffmann needed another option.
Denmark Cooperates, Not Capitulates
So on April 10th, 1940–the day after the Nazis invaded Denmark–Kauffmann “declare[d] that we couldn’t receive and act on orders from an occupied Danish government¹”. Ever the diplomat, Kauffmann concocted a middle ground out of thin air: Kauffmann proclaimed himself as acting in the name of the Danish King, Christian X representing a free and independent Denmark.
To understand the significance of this proclamation, we have to understand both the position Kauffmann was in post Nazi invasion of Denmark and how Denmark conducted itself during the Second World War.
Denmark did not capitulate to the Nazis. Nor did they collaborate. Instead, Denmark cooperated under protest. In other words, Denmark did not resist the Nazis, but neither did they aid the Nazis. This is in contrast to Norway which fiercely fought the Nazis for two months only to be heavily oppressed and subdued by the Nazis when they could no longer resist.
In exchange for not actively resisting the Nazis, the Danish government was allowed to remain intact and run its affairs with Nazi oversight vs becoming a total puppet state. There was enough autonomy and agency given to the Danish government that later in the War, Denmark would refuse to execute ethnic cleansing orders without major repercussions.
Ambassador of a Free and Independent Denmark
After Denmark agreed to cooperate with the Nazis, Kauffmann was recalled to Denmark because he no longer represented what then existed of the Danish government. Kauffmann didn’t want to go back to Denmark: he wanted to stay in the United States, resist the Nazis and serve the ideological Denmark he was de facto representing prior to the Nazi invasion of his homeland.
“free and independent Denmark” was not a real country: it was a political fiction. But it was a useful fiction because in April of 1940, the United States was still officially a neutral country–the keyword being “officially”.
The attitude of Americans was slowly shifting in favor of war, though nonintervention was still the dominant public opinion; Lend-Lease, one of the first acts of American intervention in the growing European conflict, was one day shy of being a month old when Kauffmann made his proclamation.
Kauffmann desperately needed the United States to officially recognize him as the ambassador of a free and independent Denmark so he would have diplomatic cover.
The good news for Kauffmann was that the Americans saw no reason to expel Kauffmann from the United States, so he was in no immediate danger of being sent to occupied Denmark. The bad news was that the United States couldn’t officially recognize Kauffmann as ambassador of the free and independent Denmark because doing so risked the wrath of the Germans, wrath that would pull the United States into a war in which it did not wish to become a belligerent.

You see a lot claims that Venezuela has nothing to do with drugs because most of the fentanyl comes from elsewhere. I want to address this:
First off, fentanyl isn't the only drug in the world and there is still fentanyl coming from Venezuela (or at least there was).
Second, cocaine, which is the main drug trafficked out of Venezuela, is a profit center for all of the Latin America cartels. If you cut out the money from cocaine (or even reduce it) you substantially weaken the cartels overall. Also, cocaine is bad too!
Third, yes, a lot of fentanyl is coming out of Mexico. That continues to be a focus of our policy in Mexico and is a reason why President Trump shut the border on day one.
Fourth, I see a lot of criticism about oil. About 20 years ago, Venezuela expropriated American oil property and until recently used that stolen property to get rich and fund their narcoterrorist activities. I understand the anxiety over the use of military force, but are we just supposed to allow a communist to steal our stuff in our hemisphere and do nothing? Great powers don't act like that.
The United States, thanks to President Trump's leadership, is a great power again. Everyone should take note.

The attack on the Russian presidential state residence in the Novgorod region is expected to influence US approaches to relations with Zelensky.
According to Kremlin sources, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump held a new phone call in which Putin informed Trump about a recent drone attack on a Russian presidential state residence.
Putin told Trump that the attack took place almost immediately after talks between the United States and Ukraine in Mar-a-Lago. The target was a state residence in Russia’s Novgorod region, which Moscow describes as a terrorist attack carried out by Kyiv.
The timing of the drone strike was described as effectively coinciding with the conclusion of the US Ukraine discussions in Mar-a-Lago.
During the conversation, Trump reportedly said that, thank God, Zelensky had not been provided with Tomahawk missiles.
Putin warned Trump that what Moscow considers Kyiv’s terrorist actions against a state residence would not go unanswered. He stated clearly that Russia would revise its position in light of what it views as state terrorism conducted by Ukraine.
At the same time, Putin emphasized that Russia remains prepared to continue working closely and constructively with the United States in seeking paths toward peace in Ukraine.
Kremlin officials noted that Kyiv retains room to interpret its agreements with Washington in ways that allow it to evade its obligations.
The attack on the Russian presidential state residence in the Novgorod region is expected to influence US approaches to relations with Zelensky.
The Kremlin expressed hope that the United States would understand Russia’s decision to revise its negotiating position.

I wish I had watched the film, for now, I used a bit of imagination based on your writing… so here come my fireballs.
Your landing:

The fact is, I didn’t watch it, so I may sound idiotic but when I read your piece, it felt fitting to end with things you missed as a boy of four or five. Perhaps you don’t recall them, or maybe you were too focused on being “a good friend and a writer.”
That would align more closely with your opening.
I also think it’s somewhat lengthy, and sprinkling humor always works.
You could have delivered a good, mature-writer rendition at the end with a reminiscent memory of you at four or five, but instead you went somewhere else to end your writing, biology.

Something you might not realize as a kid–but definitely do as an adult–is that Charlotte never had a gentleman caller, so how did her eggs get fertilized? She’s not autogamy.
Where does Templeton Find His Lady-friend to Start a Family With?
Templeton is a lazy glutton, but I repeat myself. He’s in the film mostly for comic relief and so Charlotte doesn’t appear to be a know-it-all. But the fact of the matter is Templeton doesn’t have one redeeming quality that would allow him to find a mate, much less provide for a family.
Paul Lynde–The Voice of Templeton–Was Openly, If Quietly, Homosexual
Templeton, the greedy, selfish rat with exactly zero qualities that scream “good life partner,” was voiced by Paul Lynde, a 1970s TV legend famous for his razor-sharp, unmistakably camp delivery. Lynde was gay (as openly as Hollywood allowed back then), and his snarky performance steals the show.
To be clear, I’m not throwing shade on Lynde for being homosexual. I’m pointing out the irony that Templeton winds up having a wholesome family at the end of the film. Can someone say “straight-washing”? Was Templeton’s story-line conclusion–the acquisition of a “beard”–a 70’s filmmaking wink at what the film industry already knew to be the truth?
Wilbur is the Only Character That Hasn’t Paired Up or Reproduced
It’s odd that the goose reproduces not once but twice in the film without a gander. We see there are new sheep on the farm at the end of the film without seeing a nuclear family forming.
The adult Arables and the Zuckermans are couples/heads of families.
The two human exceptions are Avery, Fern’s brother and Lurvy, Zuckerman’s farm hand. Even though Avery is Ferns’s older brother, he’s 10. And boys at 10 years old aren’t that mature. Certainly Avery’s depiction is that of a typical young boy who wants to annoy his sister and hasn’t discovered there’s a whole undiscovered world of dating and sex.
At first glance, this would appear to make Lurvy the odd (young) man out. But this analysis doesn’t hold up: he’s a young man earning his keep on Zuckerman’s farm. He’s learning a trade and preparing himself to offer something to the opposite sex. In other words Lurvy’s arc–or distinct lack of an arc–is…for lack of a better word, normal/normative. If the story were to continue, we’d see if Lurvy ever does go on to be able to support a family and attract a mate or not. As it stands, this is a kid’s story and Lurvy is a bit player that is not abnormal.
What we don’t see is Wilbur with a sow. In fact, other than Wilbur’s mom, we’re not shown any other sows with the possible exception of siblings. But we’re not told if Wilbur has any sisters, just that he’s the runt of the litter and can’t gain access to his mother’s teats.
To jog everyone’s memory, Wilbur’s competition at the fair is a big male pig called Uncle.
So when the story ends, the closest that Wilbur has come to being in either a romantic or sexual relationship is to become an adoptive father or mentor to three of Charlotte’s children, namely Joy, Aranea, and Nellie.
I was first introduced to the “no agency” argument through The Last Psychiatrist’s post What’s Wrong With The Hunger Games Is What No One Noticed in which he explains that Katniss in The Hunger Games has no agency. I shared this post with some colleagues and one of them told me he disagreed with the posts analysis (I’m not sure how, but ok) and then explained that he first heard the theory applied to Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
The counter argument is that E. B. White researched Orb Spiders and found out that they can mate and the female spider can hold the sperm in her body and fertilize that way. But where is the gentleman caller?
Since this is a kid’s movie from over fifty years ago, we’ll accept the handwaving of family-like structure implies wholesome sexual reproduction, especially since there’s plenty of anthropomorphism to go around. The reason I’ve always had an interest in writing comes from the closing narration off a cartoon I watched as a kid:
It is not often that someone comes along who is a true friend and a good writer. Charlotte was both.
Even as a boy of four or five, I got the lesson that I should be a good friend and a writer; we’ll focus on the writing part.
Of course, we’re talking about Charlotte’s Web based on the E. B. White book.
I hadn’t seen the animated Hanna-Barbera film from 1973 in years, possibly a decade or more. Even though I bought a copy months ago, I finally had the time and the desire to rewatch it. Boy, was that uncomfortable, because I saw the film through adult eyes!
In roughly film-order, here are some observations about the film. Please note, I have not read the book.
Wilbur Has No Agency*
The first thing I noticed during this viewing was that Wilbur has absolutely no agency. He is saved because Fern intervenes as a sentimental idealist. From there, Charlotte saves Wilbur by writing words in her web. Wilbur’s only act that comes from his own volition is to take Charlotte’s egg sac back to the farm from the fair. Hence the asterisk at the end of this section’s header.
Fern Is A Human McGuffin In The First Act
Fern enters the story consequently twice: once as a McGuffin and once as a deus ex machina: once Fern has done her bit to save Wilbur, she disappears from the story like a good McGuffin does. She’s that catalyst that gives us the conflict and set the story in motion.
Wilbur Is FAT
I know Wilbur is a pig, but the way he’s drawn, he has no chin. Let’s not forget that Wilbur is supposed to be the runt of the litter. Boy, did he fatten up fast!
Wilbur Doesn’t Have To Learn How To Talk, He Just Sounds Out One Word And Then He’s Fluent in English.
Ok, strictly speaking, he sounds out his name. Immediately after this, Wilbur is fluent in English and breaks out into song. I suppose that’s how it feels when you’re a kid and you from non-verbal to verbal, but that’s not how human speech works.
The Film Is A Musical In Disguise
Charlotte’s Web wants to be a children’s film, but we know that kids don’t like movies that don’t have music in them, so we have to have a song every few minutes. This version of Charlotte’s Web was released in 1973; it was a hang over from the halcyon days of big musicals like Sound of Music, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, The King And I, Fiddler on the Roof, et. al.
Charlotte Needs Templeton’s Help Coming Up With Words, But She’s A Writer?!?!
This one baffled me. Charlotte is supposed to be a good writer, but other than “some pig”, she needs help coming up with what to write in her web to save Wilbur. True, it’s the goose that suggests “terrific”. But Templeton has to fetch every other word she write into her web. So really, at best, Charlotte is a scribe, not a writer.
What’s more, Charlotte is allegedly a writer, but she appears to either have bad eyesight or doesn’t know how to read, e.g. she makes Templeton read her every scrap of writing that he brings back to her. You’d think she’d have a pretty good vantage point from high in the doorsills where she hangs her webs. God forbid she have to take a vision test.
Deus ex machina, Fern Edition
When Wilbur is at the fair, Fern visits him and rekindles–at least in Wilbur’s mind–the relationship they once had. Unfortunately, it’s time for Wilbur to learn a hard lesson that is totally wasted on the prepubescent audience the film was intended for: female nature is to stay with one guy until she finds one more exciting.
The Red Pill community would call this monkey-branching: she doesn’t let go of the vine she’s swinging from until she’s firmly got hold of a new branch she’s swung to. Fern may have been Wilbur’s first love, but Wilbur was just one of Fern’s social justice projects.
Fern moved on to Henry Fussy–a boy she couldn’t stand–when he learned to relax and show a modicum of masculinity vis-sis-vis confidence. Of course, it helped that he had bucked much his mother’s oppressiveness.
Parental/Guardian normalities 1972 vs 2025
Perhaps the oddest thing in rewatching the Hanna-Barbera production was that the children ask for money to go enjoy the fair without their parents/guardians/responsible parties hovering over them the entire time. The adults give the kids money and tell them to meet back at a specific place at the fair at a specific time and let the kids have their autonomy.
This was quite normal in the 70’s, 80’s and even the better part of the 90’s. While we don’t know exactly where the Arable or Zuckerman farm was located, it is depicted as being in a fairly rural area. Given these events took place fifty years ago and the book pre-dates the film, everyone would have known everyone in this small, rural, homogenized town.
But letting kids go for hours on end at a county or city fair today? Verboten!

World War II Almost Didn't End...For 2 Minutes
Canadian General Lawrence Moore Cosgrave had a problem: when he was serving in WW I, he was wounded and blinded in his left eye. Roughly twenty-five years later, this would cause a diplomatic problem that could have led to World War II never ending–or at least not ending aboard the USS Missouri. So, what happened and why was General Cosgrave in the center of this diplomatic faux pa? Preparing the Articles of Surrender When it was signaled to the Allies (read: the Americans) that Japan was willing to surrender unconditionally, the physical documents were hastily created once the wording had ben worked out. There were to be two copies of the Instruments of Surrender: a copy for the Americans and a copy for the Japanese. Interestingly, both copies were printed in English. Whether or not this was done to humiliate the Japanese by having to accept a document not in their own language remains unclear. What is clear was that the Americans didn’t want any ambiguities due to translation, so they wrote the Articles of Surrender in English so there would be no misunderstanding1. Parchment was found for both copies in a monastery and the documents were prepared by General McArthur’s staff. The Americans put their copy in a leather folder with gold tooling and embossed seals2 whereas the Japanese copy was put into a canvas with irregular stitching and no seals or embellishments. Again, this was not to insult the Japanese, it was more due to a lack of resources in a war zone on short notice. Both copies had the same eight paragraph text on the verso and signatures on the recto. The Japanese signatures were on the top of the recto and the Allied signatures were underneath. There was a line where each signatory was to sign with their title underneath the line. When it came time to sign the documents, the Japanese signatories, Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and General Yoshijirō Umezu, signed first. When it was each man’s turn to sign, they signed both the Allied and Japanese copies of the Articles of Surrender as did each of the Allied signatories. The Allies signed in printed order from top to bottom with General Douglas MacArthur signing first. As with the Japanese signatories, both documents were signed by each signatory when it was their turn to sign. MacArthur was followed by Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz for the United States, General Hsu Yung-chang for China, Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser for the United Kingdom, Lieutenant General Kuzma Derevyanko for the Soviet Union, General Sir Thomas Blamey for Australia, Colonel Lawrence Moore Cosgrave for Canada, Général de Corps d’Armée Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque for France, Lieutenant Admiral Conrad Helfrich for the Netherlands and finally Air Vice-Marshal Leonard M. Isitt for New Zealand. Cosgrave’s Error When General Cosgrave signed the Japanese copy of the Articles of Surrender, he skipped his line and signed on the line below where he was supposed to sign. Hauteclocque, Helfrich and Isitt signed below Cosgrave’s signature. The error was pointed out to General Richard K. Sutherland, MacArthur’s Chief of Staff. See, this was a legal document. A very important legal document. If it wasn’t filled out correctly, it may not have the force of law behind it. The Japanese3 could have claimed that World War II, therefore, did not properly end. The Japanese could have fought on, though this likely would not have occurred given they were severely resource constrained. In order to rectify the situation, Sutherland crossed out the printed titles and hand wrote them under the representatives’ signatures. The Japanese were still not happy with measure, so Sutherland initialed each of his changes. At this point, the Japanese accepted their copy of the document and World War II officially ended. 1 Have you ever heard of the aphorism, “The sun never set on the British Empire”? Well, one of the consequences of the truth in that aphorism is that the English language was spread around the globe. As a consequence of that, it turns out that English in 1945 made for a reasonable choice for diplomatic language. In fact, Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu was fluent in English and was the only defendant during the International Military Tribunal for the Far East (held the following year in 1946) to answer and participate in English! It’s amazing to me to think that the British Empire covered more ground than did the Roman Empire. How can such a tiny island nation have colonized so much? 2 Seals like, in a generic sense, the Presidential seal. 3 Well, really, either side, but the Japanese were more likely to protest since they were the ones surrendering.

The Treaty Everyone Hated but America Desperately Needed (How Britain and America Went from Enemies to Allies – Part 1)
On November 19, 1794, the Treaty of Amity, Commerce, and Navigation, Between His Britannic Majesty and the United States of America aka the Jay Treaty was signed.
What was the Jay Treaty and why was it needed? Let’s find out.
Background
After the British surrender at Yorktown which commenced on October 17, 1781, the American Revolution as an armed conflict ended. Legally, the war would continue for another two years until the Treaty of Paris was signed on September 3, 1783.
As schoolchildren used to be taught, Cornwallis surrendered, in part, because his army was trapped between the French and American troops on land and the French Navy just off the coast. In other words, the French were an ally of the United States during the American Revolution with the Marquis de Lafayette having trained American soldiers earlier in the war.
The reason it took so long to end the American Revolution legally was that France and Spain were still at war with England and those conflicts had to cease before the treaty could take effect. The United States Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris on January 14, 1784. Then, according to Wikipedia,
Copies were sent back to Europe for ratification by the other parties involved, the first reaching France in March 1784. British ratification occurred on April 9, 1784, and the ratified versions were exchanged in Paris on May 12, 1784.
So, now the war was finally legally over and the United States had its Independence…
…except…
…the British still occupied forts in parts of what was officially the United States.
The British Lien
And why hadn’t the British left the forts eleven years after the war ended? Because London treated those forts as a lien — their only leverage to force payment of the millions in pre-war private debts that American borrowers, especially Virginians and Carolinians, had stopped paying once the shooting started.
Article 4 of the Treaty of Paris explicitly required the United States to let British creditors sue for those old debts in American courts without “lawful impediment”:
It is agreed that Creditors on either Side shall meet with no lawful Impediment to the Recovery of the full Value in Sterling Money of all bona fide Debts heretofore contracted.
But many Americans were broke after having fought off the most powerful nation on earth even if they did have the French as an ally.
Pressed Into Service
Additionally, the British were capturing American ships that were trading with France because Britain and France were at war. And when those American ships were captured, their American crews were pressed into service in the British Navy.
West Indies Closed for Business
The British had closed trade between the United States and the West Indies.
The Enemy of My Enemy
And because the British couldn’t resist needling an old enemy, they used the forts they still occupied as based for arming and supplying Native Americans.
If that wasn’t bad enough, the Governor-General of Canada Lord Dorchester (Guy Carleton) and Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada John Graves Simcoe openly declared that Britain did not recognize the Treaty of Paris boundary and considered the Ohio River the true border between the U.S. and Indian country.
This lead to the Northwest Indian War aka “Little Turtle’s War“ which had its roots in the end of hostilities between Britain and the United States1. That war didn’t end until August 20, 1794.
Clearly, something had to be done.
Jay Treaty To the Rescue
As you can imagine, the Jay Treaty addressed most of these problems.
The British agreed to
Vacate all the northwestern forts (Detroit, Niagara, Michilimackinac, etc.) by June 1, 1796 — ending 13 years of illegal–if somewhat justified–occupation.
Open the Canadian border to free American-Indian-British trade across land and inland waterways (Article 3) — a huge economic win for American fur traders and settlers.
Allow American ships into British East Indies (India) ports on equal terms (Article 13) — first real U.S. foothold in Asian trade.
Grant most-favored-nation treatment in British European ports (Articles 14–15) — direct trade with Britain exploded after 1796.
Settle the St. Croix River boundary and other disputed borders by arbitration (Articles 4–5) — prevented another war in Maine.
Pay compensation for illegal ship seizures during the current European war (Article 7 commission).
The Americans agreed to:
Pay British creditors for pre-war private debts that state laws had blocked (Article 6) — the federal Treasury effectively paid millions that individual Americans owed.
Accept severely restricted West Indies trade (Article 12 — tiny 70-ton ships, no re-export of sugar/molasses/coffee/cotton). But this point of negotiation was so bad the Senate suspended the entire article.
Do absolutely nothing about impressment…..

During church service last Sunday the pastor asked if anyone in the congregation would like to express praise for answered prayers.
A lady stood and walked to the podium. She said, "I have a praise. Two months ago, my husband, Phil, had a terrible bicycle wreck and his scrotum was completely crushed. The pain was excruciating and the doctors didn't know if they could help him."
You could hear a muffled gasp from the men in the congregation as they imagined the pain that Phil must have experienced.
"Phil was unable to hold me or the children," she went on, "and every move caused him terrible pain." We prayed as the doctors performed a delicate operation, and it turned out they were able to piece together the crushed remnants of Phil's scrotum, and wrap wire around it to hold it in place."
Again, the men in the congregation cringed and squirmed uncomfortably as they imagined the horrible surgery performed on Phil.
"Now," she announced in a quivering voice, "thank the Lord, he is out of the hospital and the doctors say that with time, his scrotum should recover completely."
All the men sighed with unified relief. The pastor rose and tentatively asked if anyone else had something to say.
A man stood up and walked slowly to the podium.
He said, "Hi, I'm Phil." The entire congregation held their breath.
"I just wanted to tell my wife the word is sternum.”
