Are you an ICT professional interested in working at the EU institutions, as a permanent official? Applications are now open for an #EPSO AD8 competition covering two fields: #AI and #cybersecurity 🎉
If you have experience from relevant fields, apply by 13 October – all the information is available from the EPSO website 👉 https://lnkd.in/efrVvuRq

Hi Larvitz, this all sounds like you run your mastodon instance as well via #podman #quadlets. Every few months, I search the web for a good template setup to migrate from Mastodon from podman-compose to quadlets.
Are you using quadlets? I noticed that 2 weeks ago @npub1dvl…sjcl ( new account @npub1gca…x56k) published quadlet files at https://codeberg.org/darkpixel/Mastodon-Podman-Quadlets 👏
Why don't you compare/share your setups? 🙃

the idea is interesting, but I wonder how many people could be verified without running into scaling issues. Maybe better to have a per-user path in the verification link?

Who is "we" that selected #opensuse Is this selection process public? I like to read it.
Can you please provide a source for #RockyLinux and #AlmaLinux being based on #RHEL?
I understood both are based on CentOS Stream which is based on Fedora.

I agree on the binaries. But instead of dismissing very potent technical choices, I'd rather advocate for compiling in Europe. In the case of Fedora, the build infrastructure is open source and both RockyLinux and AlmaLinux proved that compiling from upstream Fedora is doable.
Same should be done for any free software that gets used systematically and at scale in critical sectors. It would be no different for opensuse.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molinux
"Molinux was an operating system based on Ubuntu sponsored by the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha and the Fundación Ínsula Barataria."
The French Gendarmerie is basically using #ubuntu.
When it comes to enterprise-grade distributions linked to an association with open governance (opposed to company owned), there are not so many options.

Have you considered the FAQ?
https://eu-os.gitlab.io/faq#fedora
Why is open source not enough? Isn't Ubuntu a company? It could be bought any time by someone else. Why do your arguments not apply to the kernel and other components developed internationally?

If you are Paris-based, why don't you join at the occasion of https://hackdays.numerique.gouv.fr/ and we discuss this briefly in person?
I personally have the impression that the issue is more the current choice against Nix/NixOS and less my current employer.
Anyway, I hear that you are confused and will see during the hackdays with the other contributors on how the communication on the website could be improved. Feel free to make PR if you have specific propositions.

We have an open PR in the EU OS gitlab at https://gitlab.com/eu-os/eu-os.gitlab.io/-/merge_requests/6 .
Why don't you collect the arguments there?
I am still afraid NixOS may not yet be battle-tested in the public sector. I'd like to add an example to https://eu-os.eu/use-cases#notable-migrations if you have one.
Who is using #NixOS on the desktop with some 1000 users in a corporate environment?

So to have a debate on #DigitalSovereignty, the definition is of course important and I have no specific one to offer, because it is a difficult topic.
Obviously, the (implied) local jurisdiction is part of your definition.
How meaningful is this if all countries wanted to be digital sovereign? Think of horizontal projects such as systemd/kernel.
Currently, money and experts are rare and investments must be strategic. #EU_OS cannot fork everything.

You write further "you want to be outside US jurisdiction?" It sounds as if I have written this somewhere. Did I?
Your proposals seem to promote protectionism. I like to find an approach that also works for South America/Africa/etc.
How many legal entities does the Linux kernel project require? One per continent? One per country?

I think it would be helpful if in your text on your codeberg account, you introduce the problem better that you identified and how you think it should be solved.
I understand that you prefer if a legal entity is registered in the EU. I tell you that Microsoft has Microsoft Ltd. in Dublin. This alone is not enough to keep the exist costs low.
A number of bright people from across the world have thought previously about these questions. The outcome is #almalinux and #RockyLinux.

What is incorrect? Can you be more specific?
#ReactOS uses US-based Github.
https://github.com/reactos/reactos
I think that's ok if the exit cost is low. Same for #EU_OS. Once people start using it, they may consider to have a build server in the EU. Do we now need to change the architecture because of this? I do not think so.

Dear Adam,
Let me try to convince you of the underlying choices of the distro for the stage of the proof of concept. I gathered the arguments here:
https://eu-os.eu/faq#sovereignty
Where do you disagree?
You can of course contribute through pull requests to the faq.md file in the website repo.
