It simply depends on where you are on the "good people vs bad people" spectrum from the rulers' point of view. All the regimes you mentioned can be functional and tolerable, if you're part of the ruling class or obey their rules.

Things are going really fast.
The general idea was that it all starts with "it's the immigrants" and then a sequence of minorities and then, just as the final step, non-nazi white people.
Instead, USians jumped all the intermediate steps and passed from detention camps for immigrants directly to killing white people in plain sight.

When I say that any software choice is a political choice, it's because (almost) any digital tool/platform can be weaponized for colonialism, exploitation, warfare. Thinking that tech is "neutral" can be comforting for tech people, but it's rarely true: the same ecosystem that generates new tech is based on exploitation.
This of course does not mean that you shouldn't learn tech, be radicalized and use said tech against its intended purpose. This is the original cyberpunk attitude and it's never been more important.

I’ve been asked to held a short presentation about cybersecurity issues CEOs and CISOs talk about when I meet them for work. I recollected what I heard in the last six months, assembled five slides total and finally got on stage.
Main topics were: companies don’t trust data sovereignty promises but want control plane sovereignty, they’re afraid of AI bubble bursting because cybsec vendors are too involved, they think that big threat actors do things better than cybersecurity providers.
At this point I discovered that my audience was 150 people from cybersecurity vendors and hyperscalers.
This didn’t end well.

Many people still don’t get used to fedi infrastructure and dynamics. Some of them in good faith and, huh, sorry mates. Some simply want an audience. Others need an algorithm throwing stuff at them.
I still think losing this people is not a problem. Fedi isn’t forced to “win” in some numerical way. Most of us are here exactly because refused a social race where you’re always losing, no matter how cool and interesting you think to be.
And, well, I also think that this “hard” fedi is intrinsically better than any corpo social network where you’re analyzed, monetized, stripped of any privacy, probably served to the next Nazi algorithm of predictive policing.
Also, now that Nazis actively monitor social network activity looking for “antisocial” behaviors, I’d even refuse to stay in fedi instance federated with mainstream social network. However “positive” this integration is marketed by many gurus here.

This is pure digital neocolonialism. Best parts for me, from an European point of view:
- "Shaping international policy discussions around copyright and AI" [ie: mindwash or pay gullible politicians] "to prevent less innovative countries from imposing their legal regimes on American AI firms and slowing our rate of progress" [how this peasants dare!].
- "Determining whether other countries are restricting American companies’ access to data" [because what's mine is mine and what's yours is also mine]
And of course the smart guys at Google have already supported OpenAI, with another open letter stating - among many silly things - that "Governments should generally not impose regulatory checkpoints on the development of underlying AI models or AI innovation. Some governments are seeking to impose undue bureaucratic burdens on AI development and deployment, oen in ways that would primarily aect U.S. companies".

Friend passed an industry report to ChatGPT to have it summarized, with a specific focus on data related to his country. In the summary, ChatGPT hallucinated and used fake data that weren't even mentioned in the report, with conclusions that were the exact opposite of what the report said.
Friend "told" ChatGPT of the error. Answer: "You're right! I shouldn't have used fake data. Now I'll write a new text using just the report data. Give me a moment".
Oh, yes. Let's use tools like ChatGPT to revolutionize any kind of school, tell people that learning to program is useless, use AI for "dumb" tasks. But you cannot build anything solid when the foundations are inherently broken.

Big American AI companies have used the same approach corporations have with anything else: throw more and more money, infrastructure and computing power to solve problems (any problem) with brute force. Costs and externalities don't matter because, hey, investors and marketing.
Then, of course it comes out some small company proving that reasoning and optimization are more effective than brute force. Even if DeepSeek is much worse that we see now, it's still a proof that techbros are gaslighting the market selling inefficient stuff at high prices just because they can. And there's too much money involved to officially say that the presumed Kings have always been naked.
Mind you: we didn't actually need a DeepSeek to understand the trick. Just have a look at open source AI models' performance compared to proprietary (and supposedly more expensively but much better trained) ones: less than 5% difference for the best "reasoning" models. The market was already hyperinflated. #ai

I share many of the feelings you describe. And being (relatively) old enough to have lived the first age of the web (the 90s) and what happened after, I understand what you write about how the new internet (social networks) changed interpersonal dynamics. For the worse.
But… as in the 90s we saw the internet as an autonomous zone, free of laws and stereotypes and open to creativity and subcultures, also today I believe many of us found, or even created, autonomous digital niches where expressing ourselves is easier. So, I’m slightly hopeful.
Yes, of course “out there” there still are enshittification, mass surveillance, polarization, social pressure, and a lot of people I’d like to avoid. But there are ways to minimize their impact. Or so I like to think.

There's now a long thread about what would make Lisp more successful. Nice idea, but it quickly turned into a good example of why this will never happen and why Lisp rarely fascinates new developers.
