I turned the airplane mode on for my 2015 Kindle years ago to never accidentally run into a situation that Amazon can brick it remotely.
I only read ebooks brought from outside Amazon on it anyway these days so for me the downside wasn't that big.
The device itself is in such a great shape still that I don't think I'll have a reason to buy a new one in years.

He might be right in terms of what happens (I'll take your word for it) but to me, that's not a negative thing.
Personally I find that growth almost always happens at the expense of people already at the platform or who are customers because growth focuses on everyone who is not there and not to those who are.

If Google was a more neutral party, I might be able to agree with. But Google being an active party who can decide whose apps are allowed and block for example competing apps or apps they deem morally questionable.
I think we've seen the problems in this kind of thing with Apple and iOS and I hate seeing the same happen in Android as well.

I wanted to do something productive so I started building a new portfolio site. Quite quickly, I noticed I was constantly copy-pasting stuff from my existing site to it and then realised that my site is already a very nice portfolio that tells my story and to which I've poured my heart and soul into.
Making a new one is like moving food around on the table instead of eating and hoping to get rid of the hunger.

I have very similar experience as a teenager on a local video gaming forum.
I made life-long friends there that I've stayed friends outside of Internet as well and most of those were positively life changing.
Many of my day-to-day best friends today are from another forum and we didn't meet each other in person until we were adults, maybe 15-20 years later.
It was a very different Internet than what we see now with the main platforms.

I understand (yet don't agree) on the social media ban for children some countries have implemented and others are discussing.
However, if we look at the state of some societies right now, I don't think it's just kids who need to stay away from platforms like Facebook, X and TikTok.
Of course, the real problem is not "social media" but rather the companies who run these corporate controlled, rage bait algorithm fueled money makers.

A lot of people seem to consider Obsidian a very complex tool and often rule it out when looking for a simpler solution.
I understand where it comes from as a lot of content about Obsidian is about building complicated systems with tons of plugins.
But you don't need any of that. You can write plain text or Markdown notes with a good editor experience — and it's cross-platform!

A static site — like one built with #Eleventy — which either builds from local files or fetches from a CMS before build time can have magnificient time travel capabilities.

Improvements in the language and tool ecosystem keeps making Python more and more suitable for writing self-contained shell scripts.
With uv and inline metadata, you can write scripts that contain their dependencies. And with pytest, you can even add tests to the scripts themselves.
I feel way more confident writing Python than bash scripts and I love how much better the experience keeps getting.

I agree for those kinds of APIs. In this case though, there is only one resource: next event and it's either present or temporarily missing. (And there's only ever R from CRUD.)
I'm having a hard time of mapping this idea into restful CRUD model. 404 kind of tells the user "you are looking from a wrong place" which is the opposite of what the domain logic here is.

My use case in this one is that either the API returns the next scheduled event or not (if no events are scheduled for the future).
That's why 404 feels a bit different here than in the case of "customer does not exist" because it's still saying that hey, nothing's up yet but you're in the right place.
Maybe I'm reading too much into the nuances and I might be completely wrong.

Is there a way to then differentiate between endpoint not existing and endpoint currently not providing any data?
Isn't 404 appropriate for both but couldn't that be confusing?

Let's brainstorm a bit of API design together, shall we.
I have a single endpoint API that returns an object with two keys and values.
However, sometimes that object does not exist.
I'm thinking about what to return in the second case. Should I tell the situation via HTTP code? None feel proper.
Should I return an empty object and document it as the case in the API docs?
Should I wrap my data in both cases with some metadata that says whether there is a valid object or not?
Any ideas?

I agree with David.
Personally, I like to follow people for their posts and if I notice someone mainly boosting, I tend to unfollow them because it leads to my feed being mainly posts that I don't follow.
When I want to find something new, I usually browse hashtags as that's separate from my feed. My main gripe with social media platforms in general is having my feed full of stuff I didn't choose to follow (ads, boosts, likes etc).

Changing to 4 day weeks was the best thing I did a couple of years ago. I did it after a burnout as desperate measures but I'd love to do it in future jobs as well when possible.
I ended up with a "Wednesdays off" model and it was brilliant. I only ever had to work two days in a row which lead to me being much more energetic and productive for those days and it helped give me an extra day to run errands which in turn gave more time for weekends to relax and recharge.

Writing technical blog posts on iPad is so challenging when I can't run the code examples I write.
I usually carry a Raspberry Pi with me, set up to connect from iPad over SSH so I can write code too on the go. It's not quite as good as a proper laptop but works as a workaround.

Something I learned from many discussions with others that didn't really bother me has led me to discover the First Rule of RSS:
"You don't need to read everything in your feed"
A very common reason for people to stop using #RSS readers is that they become overwhelmed with things to read, kind of like a "task list" of required reading.
The trick is, it's just a catalogue of things that might interest you (because you picked the blogs in the first place) and you can skip some or all of them.

Is there any handy mnemonics for remembering in which order the values come in CSS for things like margin or padding?
I never remember if it's left-right or bottom-up first in the one with two values or in which order they come up when using all four.
I always just put in values and then open developer tools to see how it went. But I'd like to learn them because I always get them wrong.

Mainly for DSF as the PSF membership requirements are more lax.
Generally I want to build more open communities that welcome people more openly. As a community organizer, I'm not sure if I want to be part of a club where my community members wouldn't be able to be part of.
For its purposes it might be the best working model and I don't have any hard feelings about it.

One reason I never have despite my love for the Python and Django communities is that I feel uneasy about very exclusive communities.

Are you a web developer who needs to fill a form dozens of times a day to test functionality as you develop a website or an app?

I don't want "Super Apps" that do a million things. I don't want Google, Meta, X or anyone else to control everything from mail to socials to money and information as they aim to do.
Instead, I want apps and services that do one thing well and build on top of protocols that communicate with other apps.
In my utopian view, streaming services would allow others to build clients on top of their subs so there could be competition on features.

When the company calls their home appliances "smart", what I hear is:
- they spent money on features I don't care about
- those features will be worse than standalone devices but will drive them out of market (looking at you TVs)
- the appliance is more likely to break
- my data is likely being sold to advertisers
- when the company loses interest in it and cut support, I will need to buy a new device
So no, I don't want "smart" home appliances.

Syntax highlighting isn't necessarily the difficult part, I can use something like Prism.js to provide that as I currently do as well.
My challenges are fundamental on getting from my ideas to even prototype level web component as I don't seem to catch a break in figuring them out.

I don't know why but I find learning #WebComponents so hard, despite knowing HTML, CSS and Javascript relatively well. I try to follow guides and docs and have a clear idea on what I want to achieve but somehow I can't seem to make any progress getting them done.
