Not sure why people are treating the US threatening ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz with acts of piracy as some kind of new red line being crossed.
He's already kidnapped a foreign nation's oil tankers and blown up random fishing vessels in international waters. Then decapitated said foreign nation. Then stole all their oil and redirected it away from another sovereign state.
The US are already sea criminals, worse than the pirates from Somalia in that, unlike the Somali pirates, their actions are sanctioned by a democratic government.

K, sorry, I'm going to be a downer here. I'm trying so hard to care about this Artemis thing but I just can't. I've always been a big fan of science, discovery and space exploration, but this whole thing just seems like a... well... a wank to me.
More than being a repeat of a 60s mission when it was supposed to be Mars by now, a lot of it is that I've become convinced that there's no point in sending human beings into space. Space is hostile and building outposts on moons and other planets is simply a waste of our own habitat's resources.
A bobblehead on the radio yesterday was panting over a commercial vacation industry on the moon. I heard "wank for rich people," their flights choking up the stratosphere worse than their private jets. Sounds like a great vacation - throwing up all the way there, the toilet blinking while you lose bone mass and absorb radiation.
Send robots to do the exploration or mining or whatever, and focus on taking better care of Earth. That's something I find far more exciting.

@nprofile…s67t @nprofile…vx0n @nprofile…a7r2 One thing I'm trying to figure out is that 50 years ago most middle class people could get themselves through university, buy a home and a car and feed a family with a good single 9-5 income.
Since then, despite massive boosts to productivity, globalized supply chains, and information technology people now work longer hours with fewer benefits and struggle to afford anything, and anything you buy is useless garbage that's meant to be disposable and you don't really own it anyway because they want to keep nickel-and-diming you until you die broke. Oh, and social programs are too expensive for us.
So, yeah... any day now then I guess it'll all pay off, right? Just gotta see the big picture.

It's bad enough when people skirt regulation in the name of profit disrupt the hotel and taxi industries, ultimately making them less safe, but if there is one industry that should be tightly regulated, it's nuclear.
As the article states, CNSB has been a captive regulator for a while now. That needs to end.

@nprofile…wuyc FWIW I have a pair of 6TB Seagate "Archive HDD" (ST6000AS0002) drives which the manufacturer claims are good for not having the bearings gum up after prolonged periods of time on the shelf. I see they're listed at CDN$235 on NewEgg, you could probably find a better source - but they are more expensive than regular HDDs.
And I say FWIW worth because my sample size is 2 and neither has failed yet, so I really don't have any stats on lifespan. That said I got these two at least 6 or 7 years ago, can't really remember.

They said Venezuela was crazy to be worked up over US warships in the area and they were lying. Now they're telling us the ship they sank was running drugs and "terrorists" without any proof and we're supposed to believe this is an adequate reason for a 'sustained military campaign in Latin America'. It's even weaker than "Iraq has weapons of mass destruction and they're targeting America" particularly because even if it's true, it still makes no sense to start a war over a drug running ship.
Truth is the US has been involved in a sustained campaign against Venezuela ever since Hugo Chavez was elected, when he kicked the corrupt oligarchs to the curb and dared to nationalize the oil industry.
Say what you will about the current state of government in Venezuela, but it's a US creation.

A couple weeks ago I planted a young black walnut tree in the backyard thinking that, when it matured, it would be a nice treat for future generations of squirrels.
Wasn't to be though, the little jerks came by and ate all the leaves and branches off it. Now it's just a dead stick in the ground and the prospect of all those future walnuts is gone.
There's a lesson here for humans, I feel.

Because they were bored I asked them about some stuff posted here yesterday:
1/ Yesterday was insane, blew their minds, waits of up to two hours at this same location.
2/ The slow hand-written process. Ink beats tech. Doesn't fail and elections are everywhere including places where communications can be dicey.
3/ The code they copy when you show up is your registration's database ID, it gets used to verify ballot counts. There is no link back to your actual physical ballot.

Just finished voting here in Ottawa-South. There seemed to be a lot of chaos reported by people yesterday, just wanted to share that today there were 6 polling tables, each staffed by two people. Two people directing traffic both outside and another two directing traffic inside.
When I got inside, there was virtually nobody there except a bunch of very bored looking volunteers. I was able to vote immediately and was done in less than 10 minutes.

The question being raised by the Russian invasion of Ukraine is "can powerful nations get away with simply annexing their neighbours if they want to?"
How that question gets answered will have deep repercussions not just for Europe, but for Taiwan, Palestine and us here in Canada.

Further to what I posted yesterday about the political right's stoking of intolerance. Weaponizing public hysteria and creating a culture of vigilantism is Fascism 101 - think Kristallnacht.
Who is banning books, attacking trans rights, committing violence against racialised communities or attempting coups?
Those with power merely express a concern, apply a tweak. It's their supporters that do the dirty work on their own.
