we are living in an age of grievance politics
hurt the people hurting you, or any scapegoats they provide
its hard to get people with different ideologies to focus on billionaires though
they believe in meritocracy, that the people at the top are their by hard work and not inherited wealth, or even that inherited wealthy is not an issue
or worse, they believe in might makes right, and see any effort to undo that as rigging the game and evil
meanwhile a lot of the left aren't out to hurt people, they want to give their enemies healthcare, social services, help them etc
Bernie Sanders was pretty good at cutting through all of this. being a font of soundbites
but I've come to realize its very hard to rally large amounts of people behind a single ideology, especially post internet
that's why our political parties get 30% not 50% or 70%
its sadly far easier to rally people in opposition of something, which brings us full circle back to the start

I think a lot of people don't understand that well before Brexit and COVID, people's lives were rapidly declining
Amazon was killing high streets
the modern wave of Austerity governance began in 2010 not 2016, by which time it was too late
the social contract has been broken
if you work hard it won't get you your own home, enough to live well and have a few holidays
most of my generation will be working until we are unable to survive
Reform voters skew older, but old people are part of that social contract too. they rely on children to fund their care or look after them directly. they can't count on that safety and they don't know who to blame
then there are young people who want to be edgy and rebel
a lot of poor communities aren't getting the education and opportunities that might teach them they are being sold lies by fascism
Reform voters aren't stupid, they are hard working people, they're just suckers
guys like Trump and Farage are laughing all the way to the bank

anthropic, on the other hand, does
it clearly stole artists work, particularly musicians
one of its stated goals is destroying jobs, rather than proving tools for human beings

the UK is not a representative democracy
the average age of a politician is 51, and not because we have a wide spread of representation, because there's a lot of them aged that
for the longest time our politics was exclusively the domain of private school people too. now you do get people coming from public school - ripped from the working class into the upper class. they can suddenly afford a second home and lose all solidarity. meanwhile I can't afford one home
I see what Churchill meant when he said democracy is the least worst system. if 51% of people vote to attack a minority or commit economic suicide the 49% are expected to suck it up and go along with it
the democratic mechanisms that are supposed to protect people from oppression are a lie. the people protected are white, heterosexual, home-owning men who care only for themselves

primarily - AI is a weapon for the ownership class to beat the working class with

its also over-hyped
LLMs don't do all the things people say they do. they primarily tell people what they want to hear - not facts, their factual accuracy is 50% - usually by searching existing content, not always with permission
they also mash together existing artwork, mostly without permission
its turning the internet to slop, same as those Search Engine Optimization assholes but automated
its also being shoved into every existing program without rhyme or reason, reducing security & privacy
its primarily funded by rich kids who invest their parents money in stuff that sounds cool but is not profit making
and regular joe men who jerk off to fresh gadgets then realize months later they have little use
perhaps some day it will turn a profit but today most people hate AI and want it out of their browsers

a decade or two from now there will be a picture like that of the same kinds of people standing with trans people pretending like they gave a damn about our rights while the same kinds of people were passing laws to kick us out of toilets and pretending trans kids don't exist naturally and we're brainwashing them
the Guardian didn't support the Suffragettes, it let people from both sides contribute articles and stayed neutral, same as they're doing with trans people now. and people call it a left wing paper 🙄

there was a guy in a PRIDE documentary who said something like this
"political parties exist downstream from large social groupings engaged in protest. their purpose is to legitimize the acquired power
the working class solidarity that birthed the Labour Party has long dissipated
all it is now is a managed decline by people ignorant of what made it successful in the first place
it will surely die"
trying to "fix the party" won't do anything
instead it must pick sides - stand for something instead of everything and nothing - draw power from somewhere
its for workers AND owners
its for immigrants AND xenophobes
its for trans people AND transphobes
its for freedom AND fascism
its a mess
if it picks the same sides as multiple opponent parties its doomed via superior competition
if it picks the same positions that were once held by the people it used to draw strength from - will they even believe them anymore?

I left when they decided to have opinions from both sides on trans rights 🙄
same as they did on whether women should vote or not, back when they were known as the Manchester Guardian
regardless, the modern Guardian has been in decline for a long time, largely thanks to its increasing over-reliance on privately educated individuals who seem disconnected working people's struggles
its a class of people who fear going against the rest of the right wing media, or worse, romanticize the center ground
they shouldn't favour the left, they should favour the truth, and we as people who value that stuff will meet people there... if we didn't arrive first
when the Guardian sold the Observer it threw a lot of good journalists into the hands of a company looking to pump out entertainment rather than inform
its representative of how the Guardian is become increasingly useless too. not that its history/ethos is particularly progressive and good, only RELATIVE to so much far right bullshit

I always dread articles like that because they're usually a bunch of rich people explaining to poor people how they shouldn't be poor if they can simply budget, with an ignorance about the added expenses of everyday life and of the cost of keeping your sanity when you have close to nothing
