Aspires to be NYC? Haven't seen that. I think the city is its own unique self.

It's a city. Traffic has to do with cost of living in the city and affordable housing, so many folk are living farther and farther out. It's an older city than Vancouver, so built up differently. The city has been expanding outwards, gobbling up outside communities as it goes. But those communities give the city a lot of its character. So pluses and minuses.

Canadian parks have long had restrictions on numbers. In Ontario, parks can have a max of 9 on an interior camping spot, people need to camp in designated spots, which is meant to minimize damage to the ecosystem. This is a good thing.

I had no idea that cannabis could be addictive, but with the new stuff especially, "Using cannabis before you are 25 years old can affect brain function. These effects on the brain can be permanent.
Up to 1 in 6 people who start using cannabis as a teenager will become addicted to it."
I wish it weren't young folk who were most likely to be experimenting with it.

I imagine more studies are being done with the modern stuff, to offset old studies.
This has some suggestions, including "Delay the onset of cannabis use as long as possible. Since brain development continues into your 20s, using cannabis at a younger age can negatively impact your brain’s growth and development. If you can, try to delay cannabis use until later into adulthood to reduce potential development impacts."

This is something those using pot should be aware of. Pot today is not the pot of many folk's youth.

I was once in Chicago a few days for work. When I arrived at my hotel, the desk clerk asked if I had a room preference. I told her it was my first time in the city, so would appreciate a room with a view.

I got a chemistry degree and with the exception of 2nd year organic, which was a requirement for all the -ologies, so was about 50/50, there were few women in the classes. Profs ranged from resenting women, seeming to be afraid of women, and going out of their way to be helpful to women. The most “normal” were those who taught 1st & 2nd yr Organic. Wearing skirts & lipstick seemed to make the resentful & scared ones more so.

It’s also addressing a non issue. The only headlines of folk having been caught illegally voting that have made it north have been Republicans plus a Black woman released from jail who didn’t know she shouldn’t vote (which most of us in the rest of the world thought reasonable).

Edit: I have been trying to identify this caterpillar for YEARS. Turns out it is not a caterpillar, but a sawfly larva. Sawflies are wasplike insects. The larvae eat voraciously of roses and pine trees, both in abundance here.
I am not sure how I feel about this discovery.

I know the US feels that they are above the law, to the extent that they are not part of the ICC, but Americans can still be tried in absentia, with warrants issued for their arrest when they leave US soil. I hope none of these evil people will ever feel safe to leave their borders once the trials begin.

Doubling down on ties that bind us? What does that mean? Carney isn't perfect, but he understands that Canada has to build new ties to maintain our sovereignty.
I love the NDPs role in our government, but right now, they are seen as the vote for those who really don't want to vote Liberal or PC but also are terrifying of splitting the vote and that is what needs to be addressed. Perhaps examining Wab Kinew's campaign might give them ideas.

A lot of “religious” types are pretty clueless about what’s in the bible. They might go to church, and feel sanctimonious in the doing, but they are used to being preached at. I dated a Catholic once and was amazed at blank looks I got when quoting or talking about things in it. But, he felt special because he was a church-goer. He didn’t want to be a “bible thumper,” which, it turns out, is someone who has peeked inside a bible instead of just having one to glance at. 😁

So looking at net this Sunday, for once, a glimpse of hope. Texas flipped a red seat blue, Chicago is setting boundaries for ICE ( good luck with that, and please no disparaging comments, this is about good things), and Liam and dad are back where they belong!
Bless the people who are taking photo and video evidence. If not for you, Liam’s outcome would be very different, and it’s sad knowing other young kids are in that same place, no photos of innocence sporting a bunny-eared hat to help.

Yep. And if you read more of the background, it makes this ruling seem worse. She apparently has taken steps (not sure what) to make sure she never gets pregnant again.
This was a horrible thing, but justice isn't throwing someone in jail and saying, "see, we take this seriously." Making the mental health aspect a feature would've been supporting the community better. He's an ass, and I hope this is overturned.

This was a test shot, to make sure my settings were working for snow. As I walked past the group of boys we see, I was hearing them discuss who was going to hold the camera.
"Why don't we just prop it up on the bench, so none of us has to hold it?"
I continue onwards, then hear music, so turn and look and the Indian boys were doing Indian dancing. :)

Highlight of my year!!!!! After about a decade of hearing them call around my neighbourhood, I finally saw one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I might have stayed to wait for it to wake up if not afraid of giving its location away. :)
You would not believe how many holes in how many trees I've checked out, hoping to see something peer back. Over the years, I have seen a few birds nests, but not the elusive screech owl. Woohooo!!!!!

Here is when they first became noticed by us. The one in front is the young from the female behind. From this perspective, it's not easy to see the size difference.

Another woman and I were standing on a trail looking at some birds in a tree, when she turned around and gasped. Two deer had quietly walked out of the woods behind us. They are so quiet, even in dense thickets, and if not right next to the path, it's easy to see how they can easily disappear into the background.

Looking at a cardinal puffed up in the cold when two other birds flew in. The chickadee is a blur, still in the process of landing, but the woodpecker poked its head between branches for a moment, which was nice of it. :)

We are in a time in which actual artists are being accused of AI work. An artist was booted from Cara for his “Ai” work - he is a physical artist with an amazing talent & imagination, no AI. Now a photographer who posts on IG is defending his non AI photography. The guy is a DP in film industry, has an amazing sense of colour & composition. Folk need to take a breath before accusing humans of being too good at what they do. When they talk about how AI is dumbing users down, this a part of it.

My mother had to travel with 3 kids alone when I was 5. I remember the stewardess making sure she was ok, bringing us a selection of kid books to keep us occupied, with each of us being allowed to keep one.
