#WSocial will open up their beta program today… and I have a SCOOP for you: it appears that they have quietly gone closed-source!
This is ironic, considering that the @npub1m96…ag4y just unveiled their Tech Sovereignty Package, emphasizing the importance of #OpenSource. And yet they have migrated their main ATproto accounts to W Social - whose code can no longer be inspected!

The @npub1m96…ag4y and its president Ursula von der Leyen have recently migrated their ATproto (Bluesky) accounts to W Social.
I cannot fathom why they would pick a private enterprise whose leaders didn't even have ATproto accounts 3 months ago... and who are so open to having their users' data mined to train European AI models.

related: I went to the profile of a person I deeply admire (who used to be a mutual) - and saw that the “follows you” was missing. I got a mini heart attack, thinking: “did I post something that upset her?” Then I checked the profile of another mutual. Same thing. By the third profile (of someone I message with daily) I guessed that the label had been removed in the latest version. HUGE sigh of relief right then and there 😅

I noticed your posts Jared… and I was following with curiosity the replies. It doesn’t look good.
What worries me is that here in Europe advocacy for the open social web groups the two protocols together (ATProto and ActivityPub).
Also: European politicians and media organizations are gravitating towards Bluesky / ATproto and mostly ignoring the Fediverse…

With the news of the secret $100 million investment in Bluesky by Bain, I keep thinking about protocols.
Maybe the perceived "drawbacks" of #ActivityPub are ultimately strengths?
#ATproto handles identity in a way that allows a single sign-in across apps. But wouldn't this make it easier to profile you? Is this why crypto VCs are so attracted to it?
And ATproto has funding in the 100s of millions by VCs but at some point they'll want to turn a profit. There is ZERO pressure here to ensh*tt*fy

tangentially related but I'm beginning to think that maybe the whole point of the ATmosphere being open is to find a way to capture billions of data points for profiling / monetization purposes? I know everything is public here too, but the language of their press release gave me the creeps.
I may start referring to them as Blue$ky and the ATmo$phere.
I mean what's the draw otherwise for VCs and crypto bros?

Mike Masnick, who sits on the board of #Bluesky, claims the team was too busy to announce the series B funding (see screenshot).
But something is fishy.
Even the VC firm - Bain Capital Crypto - isn't listing Bluesky anywhere on their website: https://baincapitalcrypto.com/portfolio/
Why the mystery? Was Bluesky afraid of a public backlash & asked to keep the information under wraps?

Can you imagine Mastodon raising 100 MILLION dollars from a crypto VC fund and failing to disclose it... for a full year? No I can't either.

Yesterday my VPS set off a warning, as it was hit by a huge spike in incoming traffic, peaking at 55GB at 2:15pm and lasting for an hour.
Upon investigating, it turns out it was my PeerTube instance that was targeted.
Where did the traffic come from?
meta-externalagent (aka Meta's web crawler which is used to grab content to train its AI system).
I feel a little bit violated thinking my Fediverse promo video was grabbed by it, sigh.

Fun fact: I have an official GIPHY creator channel with 2 billion views 💁🏻‍♀️ (I actively used it from 2017-2020). Maybe it’s time I resurrect it to create GIFs and stickers to promote the Fediverse

I’ve been looking for a 4-leaf clover my entire life. Actively looking whenever I’m in a garden… and never found one.
Until today.
In a countryside train station, before hopping on a train to Como with my family.
I told my child and she immediately found another. She was so proud: “It’s my first 4-leaf clover!” (I immortalized the moment with my phone - the photo shows her hand picking it).
I’ll be pressing them in a book later today. Such precious keepsakes 💚

I was thinking of privately reaching out to Casey and PJ first (Kevin has barely used the instance) to see what their plans are for the future...
and then maybe try to assemble a group of volunteers to see if anyone is interested in helping out with hosting, moderation, onboarding, community engagement, etc.
For now whenever I can I browse their local timeline and interact with people to make them feel seen and valued...

Year 1 (2023):
It feels a little lonely as 99% of my friends stayed on Big Tech platforms.
Year 2 (2024):
I start a blog - #TheFutureIsFederated - to explain the fediverse to "normies"... and I make a lot of new (techie) friends.
Year 3 (2025):
My techie friends encourage me to start self-hosting with #YunoHost... and I do! (GoToSocial, PeerTube, NextCloud...) I LOVE it.
Year 4 (2026):
I plan to buy a Heltec to try out off-grid mesh radio communication 💁‍♀️

what infrastructure are you using? Masto.host has SUPER affordable plans. You could easily pay 6 dollars a month and they handle everything in the backend.
49 a month is a robbery!
I pay 12/month for a VPS that has my PeerTube, NextCloud, GoToSocial, Pixelfed and a bunch of other FOSS apps

GoToSocial is lightweight and super efficient and it works perfectly on a basic VPS (4 Euros/mo).
I hear that Mastodon is resource intensive… people recommended I opt for GoToSocial when I shared my plans to self-host. I’ve been using it for 14 months now and I have nothing but great things to say about it

A month ago there was a lot of buzz on the Fediverse about a new Mastodon server set up by prominent journalists: #TheForkiverse.
There was a rush of sign-ups: nearly 10,000 users in a couple of weeks. People new to the Fediverse, willing to try it out.
It's been hard to gauge how active it still is... so this morning I re-downloaded @npub1cnh…wtw0 so I could browse their local timeline.
I've been liking and replying to recent posts. Just doing my little in making them feel seen and welcome 🤗

Popular YouTube creators hold so much power in raising awareness about alternatives to Big Tech platforms.
I felt hope while watching Johnny Harris's latest video "The Internet Didn't Fail. It Was Taken"... which ultimately launched a new initiative: crowdsourced journalism on a site called NewPress.
Looking at screenshots I thought the site was hosted on #Ghost and thus federated.
Alas it's on SquareSpace and filled with trackers 😭

Apparently my Fedi promo video is giving error messages on YouTube (shocker).
So I just logged on YouTube Studio for the first time in months to see what's going on... and found some interesting comments.
I'm not caffeinated enough to deliver zingers but I hope my response was adequate.
On the upside, I also saw a few comments of people who set up new accounts here, so yay.
As for the unplayable problem: no clue. But this is why I LOVE #PeerTube and on my website I'm using the PeerTube embed

Some say other protocols have bigger budgets and are better at marketing.
I say: the Fediverse - by the people, for the people - has passionate advocates who use their talents to promote it, often without any financial incentives. It comes from the heart.
Before FOSDEM I asked my friend @npub1ms7…qe2y - a super talented photographer - if he'd consider bringing his professional camera to take photos of speakers in the Social Web devroom. He did... and so did I.

FOSDEM achievement = unlocked: yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting @npub1cm0…enqe in person and grab some cool #curl stickers, yay! 🥳
I was really sad to miss his keynote (early train, sigh), but I'm planning to watch it online.
It was amazing to meet so many wonderful people at #FOSDEM... I've already started a countdown on my phone for the next edition. I can't wait.

yesterday at FOSDEM there was a member of the European Parliament who was asked why so many politicians are still on X and her answer made total sense (sadly):
Politicians stay on X because journalists are still there, so they feel that if they leave they will become irrelevant / not be written about.
And journalists stay on X because politicians are there.

Current status: fuming with rage at the SHEER INEPTITUDE of the French press in covering W Social and Mastodon.
In the article linked below "journalist" François Saltiel wrote that @npub1vl7…f6g0 "quit his own network [Mastodon] because he was fed up with the behavior of certain users."
Eugen referred to deleting his bridge to Bluesky, not quitting Mastodon FFS.

The French press devoted many articles to it (meanwhile: crickets about the Fediverse).
Before I go full steam ahead grabbing domain names and creating a web site that shows the weaknesses of W / suggests to check out the Fediverse instead, I want to put it to you: should I do it?

The "brilliant" minds behind the new social network wsocial.eu forgot to grab related domain names, so I applaud the efforts of the creator of w-social.eu... encouraging people to be social and simply join the fediverse.
Fun fact: yesterday I almost registered wsocial.lol (1 Euro for the first year) and wsocial.wtf.
I guess if I see an article in mainstream media about wsocial.eu I may do it (if the domains are still available).
Journos, you should cover the fediverse!

How lucky I am that I can still protect her from the Brave New World of the broligarchs. It's relatively easy now (she's turning 5)... but it'll get more difficult as time goes by.

I'm well aware that posting this info on the Fediverse seems like a pointless exercise, but it's to raise awareness and spread the word to people active in BOTH places.
I was never really active on #Bluesky and entirely stopped using it months ago but there's no point in posting this info there because I have zero reach. Or rather: 1100+ followers and 1-2 likes (at best!) and zero comments for any post. It's like I'm shadow-banned.
If you use it and enjoy it no judgement but please be safe!

An important PSA for people who are active on #Bluesky and who, upon hearing that the ICE account was officially verified, are saying: "I will just block it."
Blocking on Bluesky is NOT PRIVATE: it's very easy to see who is blocking any account by visiting sites that list that information.
I took a screenshot from https://clearsky.app, listing all the accounts that are blocking ICE (I pixelated avatars and usernames for privacy purposes).
The safest bet is to mute (that info is private) 😫

Today I learned from @npub1xse…lgk3 that the Parisian art space @npub19xa…rx37 is on the fediverse.
I was curious about the server it's hosted on, so I checked it out and more good news: there are several cultural institutions on it.
Turns out, it's an initiative by the French Ministry of Culture: a Mastodon server to share "cultural news in a way that is freer, open and independent" (their words)!

Looking back at 2025 I can't help but feel an immense sense of gratitude towards the fediverse.
I found so many friends and lovely communities on here. I feel part of a rebel alliance, working towards the goal of creating a better internet - and resisting broligarchs.
This year I made a stock photo for the fediverse and an introductory video. I hope I can find MANY new ways to support the good cause in 2026.

I spent 6+ hours building LEGO sets yesterday - one for my child (a pirate ship) & one for myself (the Wicked Emerald City Wall Art - still a work in progress).
I was checking my fedi feed from time to time and it was making me SO HAPPY to see many friends building LEGO sets. It seems a popular hobby here 💛
You should have seen my excitement when I found a rare teal brick separator in the Wicked set 😂

By the way, your homepage states: "Follow us on" followed by the icons of Facebook, X and LinkedIn. I always found it odd, since those are algorithm-based U.S. companies and you are the EUROPEAN Commission. How about putting your Mastodon icon on your homepage?

There is something truly magical about witnessing (and helping) your child learn to read and write. *Especially* in the age of AI.
Meanwhile, many humans only a decade older than my child already default to using LLM systems for any form of writing. For “convenience’s sake.” Not to mention grown adults (who should know better).
This is making me even more motivated to advocate for digital literacy… and make sure my child develops & nurtures critical thinking skills. For life.
