As a young person I had to go the library (YAY LIBRARIES), to track down the phone number of the company. My only clue was the bottom of the bowl. I had to wait for family gatherings to show the catalog in person to all the aunties to compile the list.
I see now they are actually Ellingers not Ellinger’s.

Luckily the Indian store in Vacaville had old stock on their shelves and I bought all 4 bowls he had some 4 years ago. Nowadays they are listed on eBay. This one listing has a decal that is probably the same decal my Mom saw when she bought the original bowl from Kmart.

Aunts had always been asking me where to buy the bowl, so at that time I called them all to see if anyone else wanted to order some more, the more we ordered the lower the shipping cost from Sheboygan, Wisconsin to California. So we ordered a bunch back then, including larger and smaller sizes. Eventually an Indian store in Berkeley, Milan started carrying them, buying them at wholesale from Ellinger’s. So I called them after the fire but their stocks were replaced by plastic copycats.

The humble bowl was super popular amongst Indian immigrants who shopped at Kmart in the 70s. I am sure it was under $5, probably $2 or $3. Eventually the one we had developed a crack after 20 years of hard use. So as a young person I wrote to the company to see about getting a replacement since they had long since disappeared from local stores. Pre-internet/website, they emailed me a catalog, that is when I discovered they had much more to offer.

Almost every 2 days I use a #120 Ellinger’s Agatized Wood bowl to knead my dough for roti / chapathi. These bowls survived smoke damage. I tried to buy another for a nephew about a year after the fire as he was starting to cook and that is when I realized that Ellinger’s did not survive the pandemic. The company has since been sold and the new owner maintains an instagram presence. I guess eventually he will start producing again, it seems he is selling older stock still.

For any battery operated ones I imagine placement would be similar. This product is not hardwired, does require a base station though. The base station pairs with other X-sense devices. So this could be a possibility for homes without hardwiring. There is an app to get notifications on as well.

Then I did the stupidest thing ever. Went back into my smoke filled room to get my keys, my phone and yank the PC from the wall. When I stood up from getting the PC the window exploded with fire I could hear the fireman yelling at the doorway, but I kept screaming. I’m coming. I’m coming so he doesn’t risk his life because I know the house in the dark he doesn’t. I was the contractor.

I then walked out into the hallway and before I could even go downstairs and before I saw flames. All I saw was a super thin whisp of black smoke coming upstairs kind of like when you blow out a candle on a cake. This was coming from the fire door leading to the garage. Before I check that part out, I dial 911 from my connected earbuds since I’m a podcast junkie. And then ran around the house waking everybody out telling them to exit the house. Engines were there super fast.

Exactly this. If I were not an early bird and fully alert and awake at 3:45 AM doing online shopping (because shelter in place)in my room above the garage. I probably would have died from smoke. I just felt my room rock. Opened another tab to see if the bad place was posting about earthquake. Checked USGS. Nada. Then heard a series of pops (Now, I assume the one battery that exploded started a chain reaction with other assorted tool batteries).

Many fires start in the garage like ours. 911 call and fire engines arrived way before they were set off. So folks may want to look for heat sensor alarms or other methods of detection in garages.

The batteries in hardwired provide backup during power outage. From personal experience I can tell you that those damn batteries provided uninterrupted alarms for over a month in our house post fire. There were ones where it was not safe for me to get on a ladder to pull the battery. To this day I dread performing the test after inserting fresh batteries since that sound is a trigger.

Oh no! I have taken to pouring bulk size laundry detergent into smaller bottles (saved Mrs. Meyers bottles that were staged in our rental model home after our fire). I do this to make it easier for me to dispense and to get family to understand only a small amount is needed. I drew sharpie lines on the small caps to align with correct amounts. People see the big bulk cup, they get carried away. Sharpie Pro markers are less resistant to fading in such cases.

If you have a screw, most Ace hardware stores will have a great display of holes. Recently wanted to replace the cheap aluminum screw that comes inside an Italian piece of cookware with a stainless steel screw so it would not rust with frequent washing. The size turned out to be Metric Stainless Steel M5 x 20 .80 pitch and they had them but at $1.49 each!

I am in California. A produce market will have just the pods, similar to how fresh snow peas are sold, for example. There is a large outdoor produce stand on a farm here that was selling the whole bundle. Usually it is 1 chickpea / garbanzo per pod but sometimes it can be 2. It is a rarity to find them fresh so it is always exciting. I once had a restaurant salad w/fresh ones in the Hamptons. Let me see if I can find my pic.

They taste really yummy fresh and green. Labor intensive to shell them. Local farm stand sometimes sells whole bundles including the leaves and branches. Cook like you would peas but longer.
