April 15, 1450, Formigny, France
The Battle of Formigny was one of the last battles of the Hundred Years war and resulted in the French conquering Normandy from the English, as well as being the first battle where cannons were used in an open field battle. In the year 1449 the English conquered the town of Fogueres from the French. As a result King Charles VII of France used the capture of the town as an excuse to invade Normandy. By late 1449 the French had captured much of Normandy with the exception of the port cities of Caen and Cherbourg. In January of 1450 an English army led by Sir Thomas Kyriell left England and arrived at Cherbourg. Kyriell's army left Cherbourg and marched south, where the English recaptured the city of Valognes and continued advancing. The English switched the direction of their march and marched east towards the town of Formigny after learning of a large French garrison in the city of Carentan. Two French armies began shadowing the English led by Jean de Clermont and Arthur de Richemont.
On the night of April 14th the English arrived at Formigny and constructed an army camp, as well as defenses close to the town. On the morning of April 15th the English took up positions and French scouts were spotted sometime later. An hour later the French army under Clermont arrived. The French had around 3k men initially, while the English had around 4.5k men. Clermont observed that the English were dug in near the bridge leading to Formigny, so he decided to use cannons against them. The French had a new type of cannon known as a culverin invented by French brothers Jean and Gaspar Bureau. Culverins were mounted on a mobile carriage making them easier to move around vs the older bombard type cannons. The culverins began firing at the English postion. After significant bombardment by the French, English longbowmen advanced toward the bank of the river and began firing volleys of arrows at the French cannons. The French cannoneers were eventually forced to abandon their guns. The English then crossed the bridge and captured the cannons and took them back to their side of the bridge.
At this point in the battle the French army under Richemont arrived with 2k men. The English initially thought the French were English reinforcements, but when they saw the French banners they thought otherwise. Realizing that he was now in a bad position Kyriell ordered his men to abandon their position and fall back to a new battle line. While the English were withdrawing French cavalry crossed the bridge and recaptured the cannons. The French cavalry then attacked and routed the English cavalry as they were withdrawing. The army under Richemont then advanced on the English. The army under Clermont then crossed the bridge to attack the English. At this point Kyriell took up position around Formigny, but the English unable to form a proper battle line and were overwhelmed by the French attack. Kyriell was captured and most of the English army was captured, killed, or fled. By August of 1450 the French had completely reconquered Normandy.

Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15th 1452, in the town of Vinci, Republic of Florence(Italy). Leonardo was a bastard child who was born to a nobleman Piero da Vinci and a peasant woman Caterina. Not much is known about Leonardo's childhood and he did not know his parents. In 1460 Leonardo's family moved from Vinci to Florence. When Leonardo was 14 he became a garzone or studio boy to Andrea del Verrocchio, where he learned a variety of skills. In 1472 at the age of 20 Leonardo became a master at the Guild of Saint Luke. Leonardo also painted his first painting the Baptism of Christ. In January of 1478 Leonardo, painted his first piece, the altar of the Chapel of Saint Bernard in the town hall of Florence. In March of 1481 Leonardo painted the Adoration of the Magi, for the monks of San Donato in Scopeto. In 1482 Leonardo was sent by Lorenzo de' Medici the Lord of Florence as an ambassador to Ludovico Sforza the Duke of Milan.
Leonardo began working for the Duke of Milan. In spring of 1485 Leonardo was sent to Hungary to paint a painting for King Matthias Corvinus. Leonardo stayed in Milan until 1499 where he painted many painting including his famous The Last Supper, which he started in 1495 and finished in 1498. In the year 1500 the French invaded Milan and forced Ludovico Sforza to flee the city. Leonardo then fled Milan for the Italian city-state of Venice. Later in the year Leonardo returned to Florence. In 1502 Leonardo entered the service of Cesare Borgia for a year. In 1503 he returned to Florence. Later in the year he painted his most famous painting the Mona Lisa, which was a portrait of Florentine noblewoman Lisa del Giocondo. In 1506 Leonardo left Florence for Milan after Charles II d'Amboise the French governor requested his services.
In March of 1513 Leonardo went to work for Pope Leo X in Rome, which he stayed there until 1516. On March 21, 1516 a French ambassador went to the Papal States to request that Leonardo da Vinci work for French King Francis I. Leonardo then moved to Amboise, France from Rome in service of the French king. In 1518 Leonardo's health started failing and on May 2nd 1519 Leonardo passed away at the age of 67, having been one of Europe's greatest polymaths.

Today is the anniversary of the assassination of Julius Caesar. On March 15th 44BC Caesar entered the Theater of Pompey where a session of the senate was to be held there. Caesar was then attacked by 60 senators and stabbed 23 times(only one was lethal tho). His last words were to Brutus Albinus who Caesar thought was loyal to him, were Et tu, Brute?(And you too Brutus?) Caesar's funeral lasted for several days and began another civil war in Rome. The date later went down in history as the Ides of March.

January 18th 1815, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
The Battle of New Orleans was the most important battle of the War of 1812, and a battle fought after a peace treaty between the United States of America and Great Britain was signed. On July 18th 1812 American president James Madison, had the American congress declare war on Great Britain, due to rising tensions between the two nations, mainly caused by Great Britain press-ganging American sailors on to English ships to fight against Napoleonic France. On August 14th 1814, British Maj-General Robert Ross landed close to Washington D.C. and marched on the city and proceeded to burn it down. About a month later Ross marched to Baltimore, but was defeated at the Battle of Baltimore by American General Samuel Smith. The fighting at Baltimore would inspire a poem by Francis Scott Key and eventually become the Star Spangled Banner, the American national anthem.
The British then had plans to attack and capture the city of New Orleans. General Andrew Jackson who was in the area and had significant experience fighting the local Creek Indians, headed to New Orleans. When Jackson arrived he began recruiting from the locals to bolster his forces and assembled a rag-tag force of American soldiers, militiamen, French pirates and smugglers and Choctaw Indians. In late December 1814 the British arrived and set up a camp. During the night Jackson raided the camp, inflicting some losses on the British before withdrawing when morning came. In early January 1815 Jackson had fortifications constructed along a canal, which was named "Jackson's Line". At this point the Americans had around 5k men, while the British had around 8k led by Maj-General Edward Pakenham.
On January 8th 1815 Pakenham began the attack on New Orleans under the cover of fog as he believed this prevent American cannons from firing at his men. But as the British got about halfway to Jackson's Line the fog lifted and American cannons began firing. The Americans were also much more accurate shots than the British dues to most of Jackson's men being hunters. During the battle Pakenham was killed, and discipline broke down among the British causing them to retreat. The battle lasted around 30 minutes, with the British losing 2k men and the Americans only losing 70. At this point word of a peace treaty had been signed almost a month ago reached America and ended the War of 1812. The Battle of New Orleans made Andrew Jackson a hero among the Americans.

May 8th, 1429 Orléans, France.
On October 12th 1428 an English Army of around 8k men encircled the French city of Orléans and laid siege to it. Initially the English attacked and captured the Tourelles castle guarding the southern approach to Orléans. The French withdrew and blew up the bridge to Orléans to prevent the English from using it. Orléans was a large and well fortified city, so the English constructed forts and trenches around and waited out the winter season. During the Christmas Season, the English sent a few crates of food to the French as a chivalrous gesture and the French sent several winter coats to back to the English as well as having French musicians play songs for the English. In late February of 1429 the Dauphin(doh-fan) Charles VII of France sent around 4k men to try and relieve the Siege of Orléans. At the same time an English supply convoy with 1.6k men set out from Paris(occupied by the English at this point in history) headed to Orléans.
The French relief force eventually encountered the English supply convoy on the road to Orléans. The English used their wagons to create a wagon fort around the men and set-up defenses. The French initially bombarded the wagon fort with cannons, but some impatient Scottish soldiers in the French forces attacked the wagon fort followed by French knights and were repulsed by the English. The English then counter-attacked and routed the French. The English jokingly named the encounter the "Battle of the Herrings" as Lent was ongoing and the food in the convoy was fish, due to Christians abstaining from meat during the season. The convoy then made it to Orléans. As the siege continued tensions between Duke John of Bedford leader of the English forces in Northern France and Duke Phillip the Good of Burgundy caused Phillip to pull 3k Burgundian soldiers out of the army sieging Orléans, which left only 5k English. On February 29th 1429 a 17 year old peasant girl arrived at the Dauphin's château in Chinon, France. The woman explained to the Dauphin Charles that she had received a vision from God, that she was to lead an army to drive the English out of France and see Charles be crowned King of France. This woman was Joan of Arc. Charles had heard prophecies about a "maiden in armor" coming to lead the French to victory against the English, as well as thinking Joan would be a moral boost to the heavily demoralized French Army.
On April 27th Joan led an army with Jean II Duke of Alençon of 4k men to relieve Orléans. On April 30th Joan entered Orléans, her presence bolstering the moral of the French defenders. On May 4th Joan led a force of 1.5k men and attacked a fortified monastery known as St Loup that the English had garrisoned as the French had heard that the English were sending reinforcements there. The French captured the monastery but to their surprise the English reinforcements never arrived, the capture of St Loup also marked a turning point in the siege for the French. The next day Joan led her men to cross the Loire River on boats. As the French assembled on the bank of the Loire, the English retreated from the fortified monastery of St Jean, the French then occupied it for the night. On May 6th, Joan and her men advanced on the monastery of Saint Augustine. While attacking the fortifications Joan was hit in the shoulder by a crossbow bolt, but managed to recover from it and returned to the fighting later in the day. The French then pressed on to the Tourelles castle and after brief fighting the English surrendered it. The French then repaired the bridge to Orléans and Joan entered the city triumphant. Two days later the English ended the Siege of Orléans and withdrew from the area. The Siege of Orléans marked a turning point for the French in the Hundred Years' War and earned Joan of Arc the title of the Maid of Orléans.
