Some big news from #Bluesky for #ATProto again 👀
Two things:
1) Daniel has recently been publishing a series of blog posts about how the shared-private / permissioned part of the protocol will look like, and today he published a first complete overview of how it will work. This will enable non-public posts on Bluesky and a lot of new types of apps (e.g. non-public photo sharing, private Facebook-like groups, services like Strava, etc.)

yeah well… it's a downside. But it's a solvable problem, it's not hard to detect such fake engagement because of how transparent everything is. It's also possible to build smarter feeds that take such things as who you follow & trust into account (and people have).
Mastodon also has the Trending feed, if you go to mastodon.social logged out, you get an overview of what people are talking about today on the Fedi.

But the conditions aren't publicly known, since then the spammers would work around them… so sometimes people get it unfairly and don't know why. (I've seen it applied e.g. after someone posted a gofundme link, since there were a lot of scams like that, e.g. a post about some dog that got hit with a car, with a drastic photo, and they're collecting money "to save the dog", plus 1000s of likes on it from fake accounts to bump it up in feeds.)

there are some conditions they've configured that trigger this label being added, and it stays until it expires in 7 days or until they review it. It's meant to detect likely spam accounts and hide them until they're manually checked.

I wouldn't put it this way that they want their service to be the best among alternatives, because they're generally very happy when alternatives show up and they support everyone doing that, it's just that naturally since they're starting from a position of absolute dominance, it's hard to imagine them not being the largest on the network for a long time.

What I mean is, a relay by itself doesn't give you anything. An AppView usually feeds from one trusted relay, so you can kind of treat these two as one whole from the decentralization perspective.

The relay isn't the crucial piece, because you don't really interact with it directly, the key part is the AppView (API server). Blacksky is now beta-testing theirs. Of course most users won't be using it, but I think at least most from the Blacksky community will.

Yeah, things like fetching missing replies are a huge step forward I gotta say (though I'm not sure what are the performance implications of that), but I still think a lot of such things that the AppView approach allows will be very hard or impossible to do in Mastodon (although on the other hand, in practice a big % of the Fediverse is on one server mastodon.social, which makes a lot of these things work almost as well as on Bluesky, but it's also not really what you're arguing for…)

While the AT approach gives you the benefits of everything outside your circles also being accessible in one place, like:
- custom feeds with all posts from anyone matching some set of keywords
- global trending topics and popular posts
- global search as you mentioned
- hashtag feeds with actually every post on the network tagged with this hashtag
- looking at anyone's profile and seeing their past content
- being able to always like/reply/RT anyone's post (doesn't always work here)

If you only want to view content from accounts you've explicitly followed (and only posted after you've followed them), then I think the AP architecture is more optimal for this use case… (maybe ignoring the "DDOS effect" of having tens/hundreds of thousands of followers on a large number of different instances that you'd need to send every post to).

Not necessarily - if you have a server designed to index the whole network but serve 1000 users actually using it (reading data from it), then it might work just as well for those 1000 users as what Bluesky is running

Nope, but they have a very custom setup that's meant to support millions of DAU users, and none of the current or near future independent installations is going to target anything close to that size - this might happen one day but it's probably years away

Rudy says he "needed to buy a $14K OVH Cloud instance", but I honestly don't know if that's one-time or per year (or per month??) or what… But it's been done for $200/mo too (https://whtwnd.com/futur.blue/3ls7sbvpsqc2w), though that was a prototype and you definitely need something more robust for production use by many people

We're not fully there yet I'm afraid, AFAIK the alternative AppViews haven't yet gone beyond experiments phase. I don't think Blacksky has launched theirs yet publicly. There is a fork of the client you can use which loads data from PDSes directly (RedDwarf), but that's a bit of a hack.

To be clear, this is very different from Twitter, because 1) if you remove it, it never ever comes back to your pinned tabs, and 2) for better or worse, it's a much much simpler algorithm than on Twitter. But it is a default, and defaults are powerful.

I think looking for similarity between ATProto relays and Fedi relays just leads to confusion, because imho they serve very different roles: one is a critical piece of the architecture, and the other is just an optional tool to let you see more content than otherwise… I wrote a bit about this in my blog post here: https://mackuba.eu/2025/08/20/introduction-to-atproto/#relay

I think it's also e.g. for hashtags - for example, on my personal instance, if I click on a hashtag # swiftlang, I see 2 posts from the last week, while on https://mastodon.social/tags/swiftlang I see over 20. One of the two is from someone I follow, and the other is from a person that someone I follow replied to. This makes following hashtags completely pointless on small instances like mine, because I mostly just see the posts I've already seen there. So a Fedi relay can fix that.

Yeah, it's fair - though it also makes it impossible to build many useful tools that are possible on Bluesky, e.g. feeds in that form as they are there, where you can make a feed with pictures of cats or moss or whatever that anyone is posting, or any mentions of terms related to iOS development that aren't explicitly tagged, wouldn't really be possible to build here

One possible problem with that is that even if that happened, this would mean that when one random person follows you from Bluesky, all your future posts would become visible in the open on a public website and the global firehose and to the 30M+ Bluesky users. From what I know about Mastodon users, a lot of them would probably not like that… (since a lot of them very loudly objected specifically to that when Snarfed wanted Bridgy to work this way at first).

And when I commented there that I was just thinking about building such thing for the Mac, I was quoted "hey look, this tech bro wants to violate our consent, block him".
Meanwhile, on Bluesky I have an index of all posts on the site, which I use to run feeds, stats, directories, search and so on, which many people use, and no one even thought to say a bad word about it. I couldn't do anything like that here.

There were some threads about "Searchtodon" which was a tool that let you search for things in the posts you saw on your timeline recently, and the guy who built it got harassed for "violating people's consent", because on Fedi you're not supposed to ever save other people's posts. (And that wasn't the only such case)

Ok, technically it's a not a full-network one - I added ~2000 known self-hosted PDSes there, but *without* Bluesky-run ones. Which means it has like 2 orders of magnitude less traffic than a full one… But if you're self-hosting a PDS, you should see your records streaming through there, if you either send a requestCrawl there or my PDS indexer has found you.

So realistically, the only way to be on the Fedi and not be risking being hit by a ricochet when your admin: a) is discovered to be a bad person, b) gets into some arguments with other instances, or c) gets tired of running the instance 3 years later, is to run your own server. But this also has a lot of downsides (like not seeing anything interesting in search or hashtag feeds, plus the responsibility of maintaining the server).

One of the many insane aspects of how the Fediverse works for me, is that people apparently apply "collective responsibility" for the newly discovered views of a server admin (who stepped down quickly) to all the previously completely unaware users on their server… who are now expected to quickly find a new place to move their accounts to (losing their old posts! since there's no post migration here). It's a proposal to add an extension/field to the protocol to let people explicitly express consent or lack of consent for a few different types of uses of their data. Something that could very well be a thing in ActivityPub too, if it isn't already. Sort of like the #NoBot hashtags people put in the bio, but in a more organized format.

You can use third party clients, the API is completely open - there aren't nearly as many as Mastodon ones, but there are some third party devs building things, e.g. there's https://www.skeetsapp.com or https://deck.blue.
The custom server thing has been usable for a few months now, but it doesn't work with Mastodon servers since it's a completely different, incompatible protocol.

Running one is a bit non-trivial, you need to either set up this Ozone service somewhere on your server (if you want this to be at least partially manual and use their moderation UI), or you need to figure out the API and build some custom code for this if you want a purely automated one

To use it, you just go to the profile of a labeller service like https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:qezlipqc4yfk2lebu7533zyr and you click the purple "Subscribe" button, then below you can choose how you want to handle each label (Off = ignore, Hide = hide post/user completely, Warn/Badge = show with a badge). You can also access this through the settings (Moderation - Advanced section).

To be honest I haven't actually worked with iOS/Mac things much in the last 1-2 years, Bluesky kind of diverted my attention 😅 I had a small app on the App Store (now actually suspended because I haven't updated it in too long) and I was tinkering with a few more, but the last year I was mostly working with Ruby and JS, building some open source / server-side things related to Bluesky.

But you can log in from another web client like Skeetdeck to a Bluesky-hosted PDS, or from bsky.app to a self-hosted PDS

Yeah, there's an artificial limit of 10 accounts right now enforced at the Relay so things don't get out of hand too quickly before shit's fully ready (it can be raised on request, but I think only Bridgy has did that so far).
Oh and one more thing, web UI isn't really integrated with the AppView, it's just a web-based JS client in the same way as Elk is for Mastodon. It's technically not any more privileged that any third party app, it's just "the official one".

So, correction, *all* of your data has its "original location" at your PDS - all kinds of records (profile, posts, likes, follows, non-Bluesky records like WhiteWind blog posts), "blobs" like attached images, and even videos now. You can even put non-Bsky records like whtwnd posts on your Bluesky-hosted PDS.
They aren't usually directly served from there (data is served from the AppView, media from Bluesky CDN), but they can always be fetched from the original source.

Yeah, so it's not a bad explanation, maybe a bit biased ;)
The key is that the architecture is very different, and there isn't a direct equivalent of instances. There are PDSes, but they do much less than Fedi instances, and they also don't directly talk to (federate with) each other. The data flows from PDSes to relay(s) to AppView(s) and to clients.

I think what Justin meant here was that the product and the protocol/architecture were designed together by the same team, with a feedback loop between them, instead of building on an existing protocol that someone else designed much earlier
