To be fair, I've never tried to "orange pill" anyone, and will continue to not do so.

If it ain't one thing it's another... Sorry nostr, but I will be venting some negativity here. Skip it if you don't want that in your life, I understand.
I was fortunate enough not to have my life savings stolen by invisible strangers with bot armies. I was sufficiently paranoid, and prepared.
But I was complacent elsewhere.
I am taking a couple of weeks off work. The death of my mother was the inciting incident, but I was at a breaking point anyways. It has been incredibly restorative to get away from the stress for a bit.
But, I have recently been informed by my lead hand that our jobsite was broken into and robbed. Again. Over the past year that I have been at this site, the local crackheads have stolen company tools, personal tools (not mine, until now), and thousands of dollars worth of copper wire. This stuff was secured but locks were cut and wooden doors were smashed through.
Apparently this time they hacked and smashed their way through the *steel* door to my temporary office (located in a concrete bike room in the parkade) and stole about $3000 (CAD) worth of my tools, some of my lead hand's tools (who already got robbed previously), and the company laptop that was the command center for the work that I do as foreman.
Drug addiction can turn a human into a monster with freakish strength.
Tool theft, in particular, is a type of theft that especially disgusts me. When one steals something of monetary value, they are stealing the time and productive energy that went into earning the money to fund that purchase. They are stealing that past portion of your life. Theft of property is partial theft of life (while murder is complete theft of life).
But when someone steals your tools, they are also stealing the means by which you convert your time and productive energy into value to be spent going forward. They are attacking both your past (the money you spent on the tool) and your future (the money that tool would help you earn). It is doubly evil.
Of course, questions of good and evil, and morality in general, do not factor into the equation for these guys (and occasionally girls). I have seen the photographs of the ones who got caught at my site, bent over the hood of police cars in handcuffs (we are constantly under attack; sometimes they get caught, sometimes they get away with it). These are not rational people making informed choices. Their eyes are dead; the drugs have drained the last of what made them human and all that is left is a Gollum-like creature, forever in pursuit of its Precious, to be obtained at any cost, even as it kills them.
They are past the point of reason. You may as well try to explain to a bear why it shouldn't eat you. It simply does what it must to obtain what fuels it. But at least with the bear, it sustains its own life by taking yours. The zombies who attack our site seek only to perpetuate their own degradation, and hasten their own incremental death, one hit at a time. It is the ultimate waste: the theft of one person's life in service of the destruction of another's.
I must fortify our defenses. The ineffectual security guard who works the night shift is of little use to me, and the general contractor is unwilling to increase the security budget. The cops who show up an hour after the attack has begun are a porous sieve who catch only the most inept. I cannot rely on anyone but myself here.
I don't know what I will do yet. What I want to do is rig our toolboxes (metal, but isolated on rubber wheels) with a serious but non-lethal voltage every night when I leave, but that's undoubtedly a crime in my jurisdiction. If someone were to smash and cut their way into a locked room and then recieve an electric shock when they tried to steal the means with which I feed myself, I would likely go to jail. I will have to pursue more neutral defenses.
My city is rotting, and I want out. It's a lost cause. My plan was to wait until my bitcoin would get me a bigger down payment on a house on the coast, far away from this cesspool, but I'm starting to weigh the quality of life improvement that would come from getting away from all this versus the benefit of waiting for appreciation.
I'm still half young, and I have many years of productive work ahead of me. The exchange rate of bitcoin isn't running away from us anytime soon, I've come to believe. I used to buy into the idea, pushed by certain influencers, that hyperinflation was right around the corner and my chance to stack cheaply was quickly running out, but that story is getting stale. "You're running out of time" is just high time preference in a different costume.
It's just money, and its primary purpose at this point in my life is to get me out of this city and into my first home that actually belongs to me. Waiting around to time the market is feeling increasingly hollow.
That said, I'm not going to do anything immediately. I intend to finish what I started at this project, which is scheduled to finish early next year. But I'm not waiting around after that, even if the dollar value of my bitcoin is the same then as it is now. If it's significantly lower, well, then maybe we're just looking at continuing to rent but somewhere more sane. But my wife and I have had enough.
It's great to stand and fight, but there comes a point when it's time to just walk away, let it burn, and build a life somewhere else. I once loved this city, but it's time to let it go. It has become but the corpse of what I once knew.

We've just learned a hard lesson about not trusting software (because that's what the CC vulnerability was, not a hardware issue). That's great. All wallet software (including SeedSigner's) is now being subjected to a viscious probing by AI and when that's done we can all sleep a little easier.
But it need not stop there. Almost none of us are qualified to audit hardware, even generic Raspberry Pi components, but building it yourself is a step in the right direction if you're serious about minimizing trust.

The arrogance and dismissive contempt for others always irked me, but I set that aside in the spirit of "separating the art from the artist."
In retrospect, someone who is that brashly confident in themself is perhaps less likely to take seriously the possibility of their own failure, to question their own assumptions, to seek to disprove their own results. We've seen it in science, now we see it in engineering.
I am recalibrating how I assess people who build things. Humility doesn't merely make someone more pleasant to deal with, I now believe. Self-doubt, so long as it is not crippling, is a virtue of the utmost importance.

Those who were unaffected, or had done enough to buy themselves the necessary time, will become increasingly paranoid and well educated on cyber security.
Those who were affected, or fear future incidents, may sell their holdings, possibly convert to ETFs (if they haven't merely walked away in disgust), and further centralize real on-chain corn in the grasps of the FIC.

Recently saw an old aquaintance of mine who was in town and staying at our place. We used to be friends, but that would be too strong a word now. Nothing happened, we just grew apart as our different values took our lives in different directions. My wife seems to get along better with her now than me.
She was pretty open about her drug use, and she left her bag on the bathroom counter, wide open. I didn't snoop, but standing there washing my hands, I couldn't help seeing the five or six transparent orange prescription pill containers in there.
From what she told us, it must be some combination of anti-depressants, sleeping pills, and probably some secondary pills to counteract the side effects of the primary pills.
A couple of the familiar little containers, about the size of an old film cannister for those who remember them; the kind I'm used to from the handful of times I've been recovering from surgery or taking antibiotics.
Some bigger containers as well, what could accurately be described as jars, containing literal hundreds of pills. These are not temporary measures just to get through a rough patch. This is her life now, what she ingests daily just to remain normal, or so she believes.
You walk around the world meeting seemingly well put-together people, with no idea what kind of complicated chemical scaffolding some of them rely on just to keep from collapsing.

Wallet question, hoping someone more technical can help this caveman understand:
I created a wallet on YakiHonne, then connected it to Wisp, Primal, and Amethyst with NWC.
Now, the wallet no longer works on YakiHonne (balance: N/A, no transaction history, won't generate receive invoices), won't reconnect to Wisp and Amethyst, but somehow still works on Primal.
Anyone got any experience with this kind of thing? Is it time to get my shit together and start using a better wallet? Any wisdom is appreciated.

I think that if he could have just been honenst about who he was, to himself and others, he might have had the mental peace be a better person.
The guy just needed a good man to love, and to love him back.
Forever denied that by his own self-loathing, he became bitter and vindictive. I don't particularly care if he ever had kids, and I don't care that he was gay, but a man who can't be honest about such a fundamental (and bleedingly obvious) aspect of his identity cannot be trusted, and the lie clearly ate away at his soul.

As an electrician, I'm tired of pulling loomex through drywall encrusted shitboxes. Let's have more stone, more brick, more large timber, with steel conduit for the electrical (makes modifications and upgrades super easy too). Hell, even concrete can be aesthetically pleasing when done right.
It's a bit discouraging to know that most of what I install will be demolished in a few decades. Lights and devices will evolve and be replaced over the years, but copper circuitry can last more than a century with minimal maintenance. Let's make buildings that can match this.

That last part is a particularly difficult problem to address. Any one company is wary of investing too much time on an apprentice because they're free to pick up and leave whenever they want and go work somewhere else.
It's a prisoners dilemma of sorts. If we all did our best to give our apprentices a good education (cooperate), we would all benefit from the improved quality of the labour pool, even if individual apprentices moved around from company to company. This could even be a further benefit, as different companies specialize in different types of work, and so apprentices would become more well-rounded.
But if we all distrust each other to provide good education (defect), and we distrust our apprentices to stick around for any significant length of time, then we all collectively lose because the general quality of the labour pool is lower, and apprentices are less likely to stick around when they aren't getting the mentorship they need.
It's a collective action problem playing out predictably in a low-trust society. I don't have a solution that doesn't infringe on people's freedom (like being indentured to a particular company for a specified length of time), but it's worth pondering.

The Fiatization of My Job
I am an electrician, broadly speaking. Four years ago, I was an apprentice. Today, I am a foreman. For a few years in between, I was just a standard-issue journeyman. That I was promoted to foreman after just a few short years could optimistically be interpreted as proof of my superior intelligence, or just as well as a sign of the increasingly scant quality human resources in the skilled trades. There weren't many options to choose from when the 30 year vet they had lined up pulled out, and they had to take whatever they could get, even if it wasn't ideal. I sure didn't feel ready to run a crew of 20, wiring a 100-unit apartment building as my first project in charge (what experience I have has largely been in concrete commercial construction; wood frame residential is an entirely different ballgame).
Before my recent promotion into the dismal ranks of middle management, I had ideas about how I would run things when I got here. Notions of improved professionalism, quality-of-workmanship, efficiency, and education for apprentices. Like so many of the recently promoted (or elected, I would imagine), I have now had the full weight of my naivité impressed upon me by the human-logistical constraints of the job market, and a race to the bottom for competitive bids.
The tradition of apprenticeship in the trades, or craftsmanship generally, is one that goes back for centuries, even millenia. Divine origins notwithstanding, someone had to teach young Jesus the art of carpentry. And long before him, uncountable generations of of elder masters have been handing down the techniques of shaping and assembling the useful materials of our world; wood, bronze, iron, all the way back to the crude stone hand axes at the dawn of proto-humanity. Education in the material arts is inherently physical, and can be accomplished only by doing; poorly at first, then a bit better, and a bit better, and so on. There is only so much armchair philosophizing one can do about smithery; sooner or later you need to go hammer on a piece of steel and see how it reacts.
The role of the apprentice is, and has always been, two-fold. The apprentice is:
1. A student.
2. A source of cheap labour.
The two are inseparable. The cheap labour is how the apprentice pays for their education, and frees up the older, experienced master to do the more complex aspects of the job. Contrary to some journeymans' opinions, it's not about "earning the right to not do hard labour anymore." It is merely an economic calculus. The boy cannot yet be trusted to terminate the high voltage connections, but he can haul in the heavy cables, and perhaps faster than the older man by benefit of his youth. But if the boy is not there that day, the man will haul in the cables. No one is above the hard physical work. There are many on modern jobsites who seem to have forgotten this.
From my vantage point working for a particular company in a particular trade, it seems that these two aspects are very frequently out of balance. Namely, I feel that we (I speak now for my company, specifically, but it's a problem in the industry broadly) are failing to give our apprentices a proper education and leaning on them too much for their cheap labour. This ultimately leads to poorer quality journeymen in the future, who do poorer work and give the next generation of apprentices an even poorer education than they received. It is a recursive spiral of degradation, created by the delusion that competent journeymen can simply be produced by fiat, without proof-of-work.
This is a yet another example of enshittification brought on by high time preference. On any given day, an apprentice is more economically profitable to a company as cheap labour, with the absolute minimum amount of training being given to them to do the task at hand acceptably. An hour spent learning is an hour spent not pulling wire and installing lights. At their lower rate of pay, there is also an incentive to make the crew as "bottom heavy" (that is, more apprentices and less journeymen) as possible, with only the minimum number of journeymen necessary to do the really critical stuff (distribution, live work, etc).
What this amounts to is a few overworked journeymen doing all the complex work with little opportunity to pass on their knowledge, and an army of unruly youngsters hacking and slashing their way through the building, screwing things up as they go because they don't have the guidance and mentorship they need to consistently do it right the first time. The time spent redoing and repairing things, and how much of it could be avoided through better training, is difficult to quantify and thus gets too easily ignored.
There exist laws that aim to put a limit on this in regulated trades: journeyman-to-apprentice ratios. In my trade, in my jurisdiction, the limit is 2 apprentices to 1 journeyman. That is the bare minimum level of supervision allowed by law.
We consistently run 4:1 on my site.
My father tells me that when he was laying brick back in the '80's, his ratio was 2:1 but inversed: 2 journeymen to 1 apprentice.
The free market libertarian in me is conflicted on these laws. They're well intentioned, and they probably make work more pleasant (when they're followed), but they are nonetheless an infringement on a company's freedom to run itself poorly.
I have informed upper management (who determine the composition of my crew) that we are in violation of the law. I will do what I can with what I have available to me for the time being. I will not go tattle to the government. But I will not take any shit about the project being behind schedule.
Perhaps it is time to find a new job. There will come a day when it is time to strike out on my own, but that time is not yet. Electrical work is not something you learn in 4 years and then just apply for the rest of your life. The physics never change, but the technology is constantly in flux. The most recent edition of the Canadian Electrical Code (part 1 of 3) is about 1000 pages long. Provincial and municipal regulations on top of that. Building code and fire code to contend with as well. Running a business, liasing with engineers, building clientelle... A more free and noble career awaits, but there is so much to learn, so much to learn...
If you need to hire a contractor (electrical or otherwise), I would implore you not to just go with the lowest bid. High prices do not automatically mean high quality, but the inverse is almost always true; low prices usually mean low quality. You simply cannot do good work for bargain-bin prices for long without going out of business. Do some due diligence on the people you hire, and try to support quality workmanship.
Lord knows, we could use a bit more of that these days.

Personal experience:
-Coldcard Q: easily the best in security, features, and general usability. People who say this is too advanced for beginners baffle me.
-Jade Plus: janky, difficult to use, and the whole QR unlock via Blockstream's website just rubs me the wrong way. Is there a way around this to get a fully airgapped session without involving Blockstream? Maybe I just didn't look far enough into this; the whole experience was annoying and I never pursued it further.
-Ledger Flex: first stab at self custody, didn't know what I was doing, now I'll be looking over my shoulder for wrench attacks for the rest of my life. Goddammit... The experience was pretty smooth though, I'll give them that.
Would like to learn more:
-Foundation Passport: the software is basically a clone of CC though, right? Maybe pointless if I'm already using one.
-Seedsigner, Krux, and other self-built devices: this may be my next project. Sounds like they're less convenient, but maybe these two and a CC make for the ultimate multi-vendor multisig at this point.

I come at this from the fundamental physics perspective so no, I don't believe we have free will. I behave as if I do, but I didn't really have any choice in that ;)
That raises uncomfortable questions about personal accountability, crime, and punishment however, since a person without free will can't justifiably be punished for taking actions they had no say in (likewise, credit and reward for valuable or good deeds are also moot).
This leads me to one of The Necessary Lies of Civilization*

Ties into the free will debate too, IMO. Most of the time it doesn't feel like you're choosing the next word from a selection of options. They kinda just... come out.
One level higher, even if you are choosing from a list of options, where did the list come from? Who selected the options for you to become consciously aware of?
If you're convinced you have free will, who's to say the LLM doesn't? If you're convinced the LLM doesn't, who's to say you do?

I think I'm primed from my days on Reddit where I found it just absolutely cringe when people would go out of their way to thank people for their worthless upvote karma, so on the one hand I lean towards not acknowledging.
On the other hand, zaps are money; they have real value, so it feels a bit different.
Ultimately, I'm with the people who say "expect nothing in return for your generosity." It's a pretty good stance for life generally.
If you need some sort of pat on the back for your zap, just don't zap.

This is where I think Lyn Alden might be onto something.
Big prints have been conspicuous due to their spikiness. If they just do it at a constant rate without letting up, it becomes the new norm, not some anomaly.
Of course, the system will still break at some point, but I suspect they will get away with it longer using this strategy.
