Tagging on one more thing about "tech folks" and I technically am one so I'm allowed say it.
There's loads of intelligent, friendly people in tech who are so used to not thinking about certain things, that they think you're weird if you do.
- stealing from artists
- pollution for speculation
- causing psychological harm
- invading privacy
- participating in war crimes
- doing business with tyrants

It's hard to be polite when people pretend not to understand what exactly people hate about this stuff.
I've been around so many tech debates over the years and LLM hype is the winner for patronizing absolute bullshit.
It comes down to people who want to do what they like, and still want to be liked. Sorry, but we're all adults, you have to pick one.
You can't fuck people over and still expect them to play with you.

Putting on my "not taking the piss" hat, I think sometimes people get frustrated, ultimately, by the fact that fedi isn't about shared values as much as it is overlapping values.
And it's cool cuz everyone can play their part in that context.
But there are tendencies that many of us are here to _escape_. Call it Big Bad Tech. Anti-BBT sentiment is a major, well-established building block of this thing.
And the LLM boom is a distillation of some of the worst BBT tendencies.

I like an AI fail news story as much as the next person, but do resist the lure of the Birmingham/Maccabi Tel Aviv story being repackaged as an AI fail story.
It's an Israeli propaganda success story, and a police chief has had to resign over doing something that Israeli police do themselves, and with a lot less diplomacy.

a coati walked up to me and put it's front claws onto my shorts and I didn't know wtf to do.
Then it was pulling and my shorts started slipping and it was starting to look dodgy but it lunged for my ice cream and ran off with it.
Then there was about 12 coati having an ice cream feeding frenzy.
It was at Foz de Iguaçu and I suppose the tourists had them ruined.

I find myself thinking about the difference between non-profit projects and community-owned projects, in relation to LLM adoption which doesn't show apparent sympathy for community and volunteers.
Wikipedia and Mozilla seem hell-bent on shoehorning LLMs into their systems, in the latter case blowing away community labour. There's no sense in it beyond groupthink.
Are tech non-profits separate from industry, or a section of it that doesn't make money?

I'm not mad surprised. Open Source is, to a large extent, another avenue for having a career in an industry which doesn't give a fuck about you if you're lucky. It's overwhelmingly a commons with a paywall.
It's full of people who get very cross when you suggest that what happens to people might be more important than what license something uses. Or how many computers they can get talking to each other.
A techo-libertarian circlejerk, is what I'm saying.

I've tried being very proactive about blocking servers long before anyone on our server sees them at shit.
Even just following something like fediblock is a significant mental load. Researching servers that aren't immediately obviously bad, etc takes time. Scrolling through hate is no picnic either. (And that's when you're not their target)
I think people are going to end up using allowlists instead of blocklists if things don't improve soon. Masto mod tools are pathetic.

No black women that I can think of off the top of my head. But the attackers would be instablock, and the servers that tolerate them, if we hear about horrendous shit we block.
The main server involved (as far as I could tell by clicking about) has been blocked by us for a good while, I think from watching fediblock. Known shitheads.
Similar would have been blocked by importing an Oliphant block list.
There seems to be an uptick in shitty little servers lately.
