A few years ago, I reached my breaking point with Gmail’s escalating privacy issues and chose to stop replying to Gmail addresses entirely. At first, it felt a bit harsh, but I soon realized: if people genuinely need to reach you, they’ll find another way. And indeed, they have.

If you’re anything like me—a Linux user who counts on voice typing and TTS because of visual impairment—you know that accessibility is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. Speaking from experience as someone who depends on voice typing (and TTS) , the quest for a seamless, local, FLOSS speech-to-text (STT) setup on Linux can be frustrating.
Here’s how you can succeed with modern tools using Linux. FLOSS means freedom and privacy; working locally means real control.
Let’s dive in! I’ll tell you what I’ve learned and what I use—and hope you’ll share your favorite tools or tips!
System-Wide Voice Keyboard: Speak Directly in Any App
Want to speak and have your words typed wherever your cursor is—be it a terminal, browser, chat, or IDE? Here’s what actually works and how it feels day-to-day:

Heads up: Handy lets you pick your own shortcut key, but it actually overrides the keyboard shortcut for start/stop recording. Like many of you, I’ve been using browser bookmarks for years. I’d save articles, tutorials, and interesting links, only to find them gone when I finally got around to reading them. Link rot is real, and it’s frustrating. But until I heard about Linkwarden https://linkwarden.app/ on Linux Unplugged https://jupiterbroadcasting.com/, I didn’t realize how much I needed a better solution.
I used to think, “Browser bookmarks are fine,” and honestly, backing them up manually from time to time isn’t a real trouble—just a slight inconvenience. My problem is that I experience massive link rot when looking into two-year-old links, often with interesting subjects on small sites—they are often just gone when I want to recall them. The problem is that saving the link isn’t saving any of the information.
But Linkwarden @npub1gwz…j8pg isn’t just another bookmark manager—it’s a preservation powerhouse, a collaborative hub, and a self-hosted dream. And thanks to the folks at Jupiter Broadcasting, I now understand why it’s a game-changer.
I haven’t started hosting it yet, but I definitely will, and I hope some of you out there will find it useful too.

@npub1xlm…0lay I recently got a Redmi A5 (Xiaomi Global), which was released earlier this year. Since it’s a newer model, I haven’t been able to find any custom ROMs or GSIs that are confirmed to work with it. I’m particularly interested in installing iodéOS for a more privacy-focused experience, but I’m having trouble finding information about compatibility.
I tried checking the official iodéOS website, but it seems to be down at the moment, and I couldn’t find an updated list of compatible devices. Does anyone here have experience with installing iodéOS (or other custom ROMs) on the Redmi A5?

I'm reaching out again because I'm looking for an Arch-based distro for a friend of mine who is fully blind. He's already a Linux user and is eager to get started with Arch Linux. I recalled your distro as a wonderful and easy starting point into Arch Linux, so I wanted to test the accessibility features before recommending it to him.
I truly appreciate your patience and understanding as I seek to ensure that my friend has the best possible experience transitioning to Arch Linux. It's always great to help someone get good advice on how to start their journey into Arch Linux, especially when it comes to making technology accessible to everyone.
Including Orca preinstalled on the demo version would be incredibly helpful. Without a screen reader, testing a distro as a visually impaired person is even more challenging than testing a distro without a graphical user interface. Orca is a powerful screen reader that integrates well with GNOME and other desktop environments, making it an excellent choice for users who rely on screen readers for navigation.
If it wouldn't take too much effort or space on the ISO, it would be greatly appreciated if you could include Orca in the Demo installation. This inclusion would make your distro much more accessible and user-friendly for visually impaired users like my friend and me.
I strongly believe that including Orca by default would not only help my friend get started with Arch Linux more easily but also demonstrate your commitment to accessibility and inclusivity. I typically use QEMU for more involved virtualization tasks and GNOME Boxes for a quick impression.
I tried the ISO in Virt-Manager based on your recommendation. As for the screen reader, I managed to get eSpeak running; it is the default TTS used by Orca and seems functional. However, I encountered an issue with installing Orca itself, and I wasn't able to install it using pacman.
I've taken a screenshot of the issue, but without a screen reader, it's challenging for me to navigate, and I don't know if it helps with troubleshooting.

Attention everyone on Mastodon! There's a scam making the rounds where malicious actors impersonate moderators or admins. They send private messages or make posts that mimic notifications, claiming that your account needs verification. These messages often include a link for you to "complete the verification process."
⚠️ This is a Scam!
Your server admin will never ask you to click a link to verify your account.
No other admin from any other server will either, even if they appear to be part of the main Mastodon team.
If your account is suspended, you won't receive a message about it. Instead, you'll see a notification upon logging in that your account is temporarily suspended.
How to Identify the Scam:
Fake admin accounts often use names containing "moderator" or "admin," but this doesn't mean they are legitimate.
Legitimate admins or instance owners usually have a badge or marking on their profile indicating their role.
What to Do:
If you receive a message or post urging you to click a link to verify your account, report it immediately.
If you have any doubts about your account status, contact your server admin or moderation team directly.
To verify the authenticity of an admin or instance owner, visit the "About" page of your instance. This page typically lists contact information for the real team administering your instance.
Always be cautious when interacting with accounts claiming to be from Mastodon or your instance's admin team.
