I did another quick Waymo count today, this time at Guerrero & 29th in #SanFrancisco
In 10 minutes:
• 46 driverless Waymos
• 85 human-driven vehicles
About a third of the traffic on my street is driverless cars.
Hard to confirm, but I never saw a passenger in any of these AVs.

Some days it feels like there are far more Waymos than usual. Maybe there’s a special event, or maybe there are fewer human driven cars out today, but I saw a few large caravans of Waymos that were sometimes 7-8 deep, all in the same lane.

I counted 28 Waymos in ten minutes (10-10:10am). It’s hard to tell, but most appeared to be unoccupied. I only saw 2 passengers.

does your library have a policy on how the digital data is handled? In SF, the data is left in the cloud for 24 hours after printing, then permanently deleted, but it's handled by a 3rd party, so I'm not 100% sure how reliable that deleting is.

I took a train to Sacramento today. The second we got off the train, I started playing with my #yoyo and this stranger walks buy and asks “have you heard of Doctor Popular?”. I said “that’s me” and we chatted for a minute. It turns out I was talking to #AndySinger, a cartoonist from Minneapolis that was a major influence on me and my art. It’s funny we bumped into each other in a town neither of us live in. I’ll write more about him, and the impact he had on my life, soon.

I posted Trump's mug shot photo on Threads and got an instant notification that the post had been fact-checked. The message under my post claimed that the image was AI-generated (which is false) and links to a super-spammy website claiming, "No credible outlet has published a police mugshot of Trump."
I did find a way to request a review of the fact-check, but it made my post hidden from public view. I'll update here if/when the review has taken place.

* easily jailbroken in Windows

iPod cons (for unhacked models):

* limited media support
* batteries might need replacement
* no bluetooth
* limited storage size
* weird gap between songs

Meta is relocating their Trust and Safety teams to Texas. Considering the state’s restrictive laws on reproductive rights & gender-affirming care, this seems like an easy way to remove women & trans folks from the moderation team.
Zuck says the move is to remove "concern about the bias of our teams." However, TX ranks second in the U.S. for censored books (behind Florida) and attempted to ban drag shows in 2023. IF perceptions of bias are an issue, why pick a state with such heavy censorship?

In 2024 San Francisco, more people have been killed by drivers (34) than by homicides (33).
Of the 34 traffic fatalities, 22 were pedestrians. Yet, SF politicians seem more focused on property crime and other exaggerated threats than addressing the growing danger pedestrians face every time they cross the street.

I agree, but what I think they'll really miss out are the features of ActivityPub more broadly.IE, cross-platform interactivity (with Threads, Friendica, and many other platforms), or the ability to follow and interact with websites on the fediverse. Those are the killer features that I can access through Mastodon, and I wish my friends on Bluesky could have access to those features too.

I tried cooking tofu in a waffle iron... and it was fantastic! Seriously! I used firm tofu and cut it into three slices, about 1/2" each. I cooked each slice in the iron for 10-15 minutes, then cut them into strips, and then seasoned them with Szechuan spices and chili oil. It's a nice chewy texture with a crisp outside, sort of like chicken nuggets. #vegetarian #tofu

I'm 46 and never listened to a Cure album before. I fixed that today. "Songs Of a Lost World" is a pretty good album. Not sure if I'll be playing it again, but it was better than I expected.

I saw the .ai domain and thought it was also some sort of generative AI project too, but I can't find any mention of that. I guess they wanted a tld that sounded futuristic.

centralized repositories aren't perfect, but I'd argue they are extremely important for your average WP user because they are well vetted. Having a repository of free apps that are easy to search, review, and consistently be able to find details like "last updated" is so handy. The most important feature though, was that users didn't have to run through the tools themselves to look for malicious code.
Without a central repository, most beginner WP users might avoid installing plugins.

Sometimes life hands you a theremin.
I found this simple theremin and portable amp at an estate sale on #BernalHeights today. The family shared the story of the previous owner, who was a music teacher. They said she used to pull it out at parties for people to play with and asked if I could keep that tradition going. I’ll do my best :)

I’m using the embed code that Mastodon provides and putting that code into the customer html block in WP. Unfortunately, codes from some Mastodon servers don’t appear the same as the codes that Mastodon.social supplies.

I'm trying to embed posts from Mastodon and Threads on my #WordPress site and... wow... things are a mess.
Posts from Mastodon.social look great, but posts from other Mastodon servers aren't displaying properly.
Then the Threads posts break all the formatting and shows up wherever they want. All of the Thread embeds show the comment they are replying to. Which means you see the same main comment appear over and over again.
I need a break.

I dug up a few of my photos from September 9, 2020 (aka "the day of red sun" in #SanFrancisco). The first is a photo of Sutro Tower from our block. The other, which is a photo looking out from our apartment, shows the contrast in color.

On September 9, 2020, #SanFrancisco experienced "the day of red sun" due to massive smoke from a series of nearby wildfires.
I was able to find some footage of Highway 101 on that day using the historic view option on Google Street View. Does anyone know of any other footage captured on Google Maps from that same day?

I first heard #BreakmasterCylinder's work in theme song for Reply All and have loved hearing all their work since then (most of which can be found on https://breakmastercylinder.bandcamp.com/ )
