It's the vocal fry. Western women use a lot of vocal fry, intentionally, believing it makes them sound more masculine. It's the ugliest thing to my ears.

Is it cheap? If you're getting it through your job, it can cost next to nothing. I had a job way back with big corporate benefits, it cost only $12/mo to get a $1mil life insurance policy. Injury insurance was also offered, I think it was $100k for less than $20/mo.
