One thing that really annoys me about the way the media explains the rise of populist right around the world is the idea that they're somehow more authentic... That politicians and people in general have a "real self" hidden inside that may reveal to the public. Pauline Hanson and Trump might be more willing to say what they think and express controversial opinions than centrists, but that doesn't make them more "real". In the end like all humans are just organisms reacting to their environment. There's no beautiful soul hidden away inside, waiting to shine through.

GPT-6-Astra is not available on the plus subscription yet, so I thought, OK, for once, I'll buy some tokens using the API. I bought $60 worth, and used them all up, just like that! So expensive! Usually, I would just use a crappy cheap model, if anything, while I'm rate-limited on ChatGPT.

I've been thinking about this blog post:
https://philosophtly.blogspot.com/2008/11/offended-is-choice.html
> "Offended" is a choice you make
Victoria’s new vilification laws reject that principle. Instead of asking only what a speaker intended, civil liability depends on how a “reasonable person” from the protected group sees it.. who is "reasonable" being highly subjective.
> From 15 April 2026 in Victoria, vilification can be: hate speech or hateful behaviour that a reasonable person from the target group is likely to consider to be hateful. The basis for the hateful behaviour must be because of a person’s protected attributes.

Conflicts of interest should be disclosed and considered, but they are not evidence that a result is false. For accuracy, that Australian study was funded by the Australian Government, not Merck, although some authors disclosed separate industry relationships. We can set it aside anyway.
A nationwide Swedish study of 926,362 women was funded by public and non-profit bodies and declared no commercial financial relationships. Quadrivalent Gardasil given before age 17 was associated with 79% lower adjusted incidence of invasive cervical cancer, with protection persisting 13–15 years:
https://doi.org/10.1136/bmj-2025-087326
Here are some others:
https://doi.org/10.1016/j.lanepe.2024.101178
https://doi.org/10.1542/peds.2014-2961
https://doi.org/10.1093/infdis/jix244
Australia’s linked screening and vaccination-register data also show the expected vaccine-specific effect. Among people under 25, HPV-16/18 was detected in 5.3% of unvaccinated participants but only 0.3% of fully vaccinated participants. That pattern was not seen for oncogenic HPV types outside the original vaccine:
https://www.aihw.gov.au/reports/cancer-screening/ncsp-monitoring-report-2025/contents/screening-outcomes-hpv-vaccinated-participants/hpv-test-positivity-by-hpv-vaccination-status
As for the all-age graph, "on track to eliminate" is a projection, not a claim that elimination has already happened. In public health, according to the WHO, elimination means reducing incidence below four cases per 100,000 women, not reaching zero. Australia began routinely vaccinating girls in 2007; cervical cancer generally takes 10 or 20 years or more to develop, and most current cases occur in older women who were never vaccinated at that age. An all age curve through 2021 is therefore dominated by largely unvaccinated cohorts.
The changes should appear in sequence:
Vaccine-targeted HPV infections fall first, then high-grade precancers, then cancer in vaccinated age groups, and finally the all-age rate as those cohorts grow older. The first three are already being observed. An aggregate rate can't be expected to show the full population effect before the vaccinated cohorts have reached the ages at which most cervical cancers occur.
Now, I feel like you've been making me do work. My plan is to sit here next to the Maribyrnong river and read yesterday's newspaper.

That is an all age graph. Gardasil was introduced mainly for 12 to 13 year olds in 2007. Cervical cancer generally takes 10 or 20 years or more to develop and occurs mostly in older women. Most cases in that graph were therefore among women who were never routinely vaccinated as adolescents. Why use the all-age rate rather than the vaccine-eligible women? In Australian women aged 18 to 24, the HPV types covered by the vaccine have fallen dramatically since Gardasil was introduced. https://doi.org/10.1093/infdis/jiy075
Also, HPV vaccinated women are less likely to have precancerous abnormality of the type that can develop into cancer.
https://www.aihw.gov.au/reports/cancer-screening/analysis-of-cervical-cancer-and-abnormality/summary
A flat aggregate curve can't show negative effectiveness.. that would require comparable vaccinated women to have more disease than unvaccinated women.

Early-life sugar restriction causally reduces adult cancer incidence and slows biological aging
Big if true, but I wonder about whether this is actually "causal" and how they could test something like that (I only read the abstract)
#nutrition #food
> Excess sugar consumption is implicated in multiple cancers through insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, and metabolic reprogramming, yet whether early-life sugar exposure causally shapes long-term cancer risk remains an open question. We exploit the abrupt end of United Kingdom sugar rationing in September 1953 as a natural experiment, analyzing 64,761 UK Biobank participants born 1951–1956. Cohorts whose first 1,000 d of life fell under rationing exhibit dose-dependent reductions in adult cancer incidence: liver/intrahepatic bile duct (IHBD) (hazard ratio 0.31), rectum (HR 0.60), lung (HR 0.59), prostate (HR 0.48), and breast (HR 0.64). We uncover two pathways through which this early-life exposure propagates across the life course. First, a behavioral pathway: Rationed cohorts consume less sugar, eat smaller quantities, and maintain healthier, more diverse diets five decades later, consistent with persistent taste preferences shaped during a critical developmental window. Second, a biological pathway: Rationed cohorts exhibit longer leukocyte telomere length (+0.05 SD, approximately 2.2 fewer years of biological aging) and lower Granzyme B, indicating reduced chronic immune activation. These findings provide causal evidence linking early-life sugar intake to cancer and identify a behavioral pathway, consistent with persistent taste preferences, through which early nutritional environments may shape lifelong disease risk. The results carry direct implications for early-life nutrition and added-sugar policy.

Saw "The Best Summer" movie at #MIFF
It is a home movie of great bands on tour at the Summersault festival in Australia and Asia in 1995-1996. I was at the Sydney show in 1995 so it was great nostalgia. Wearing my Sonic Youth Washing Machine T-shirt which I bought at the show and have kept all these years!

Unless the post is very long or paid I seem to get the full text. And I can share a link to my RSS reader instead of the substack link. E.g. https://rss.sns.gdn/share/d4639be781e6b5a06df89085775781c7aca2065b

People complain about #substack, but one advantage it has over #beehiiv is that it provides #RSS feeds for every #blog, whereas beehiiv does not.

By “discrimination”, do you mean ordinary discernment like distinguishing trustworthy from untrustworthy, safe from dangerous, which is socially necessary, or unjust treatment based on irrelevant traits such as race or sex?

Aussie investment strategy:
1. Buy average well-kept house in capital city, with garden.
2. Demolish it and remove all life. Ensure not even a cockroach survives!
4. Build grotesque McMansion in security compound with fences, electronic gates and security cameras. Surround with a little concrete and/or AstroTurf, to your taste.
5. Auction prestigious residence at premium price.
