For my parents generation, people born during the 1930s, mass consumption of music and other arts became the norm.
Instead of playing music being social being something that unites us, the consumption of music and art became an identity marker, a signal of status, of wealth.
And since the stories about music and the arts are written for mass consumption, they only focus on famous people, their hubris, betrayals, and their tragedies.
From cradle to grave, we have been trained as commodified people, taught the pseudo-science of Social Darwinism as self-evident human nature.
The isolation of relentless competition for status and wealth now defines many relationships, and so define arts.
For thousands of years most art was folk art, that was its purpose, its function; it was already naturally “democratized”.

Because of how society is deliberately structured, everything in their lives tells them they are normal.

Cool. Something I've tried to open thought and discussion on, is the real-world impact of so much formerly public infrastructure, services, resources have been actually or virtually privatized it effectively means Universal Basic Income as often proposed becomes another massive, stealth transfer of wealth into the hands of the oligarch class creating the problem.
Hand-in-glove with a reformed model would be the overturning of Citizens United, severing the connection between that same Oligarch class, their political and corporate proxies, remediating the damaged to our once liberal, pluralistic democracy.
We should marry civil liberty with civic responsibility, the benefits of taxation felt on a visceral level by treating citizenship no differently than military reserve members, but instead we study and practice peace, simultaneously serving their families, friends, communities, while being free to pursue career and or lifelong education.

As someone at the intersection of several deliberately marginalized communities, my needs demand I keep trying to seek out and work to build relationships.
That is difficult when the socially acceptable default is anti-Blackness, but the Black community I would turn to for support widely regards LGBTQ identity as separate from authentic Black identity, is spoken of as being demonic in nature, and a product of colonization.
Though not exclusive to Black and Brown communities, anti-Trans rhetoric and violence is escalating, yet instead of being unity in social and economic solidarity, we are more divided by race and neoliberal class competition than ever.

My lawyer fired me as a client because of that; angrily stating it was hubris bordering on delusion for me to believe I knew anything of the kind.

Last night I rode my bike a couple of miles to the grocery. Halfway there I noticed a young college age white girl following me. At a light I turned to look at her and she bolted, turned around and rode off.
When I came out of the grocery the same girl rode up and apparently assumed I didn't recognize her.
White people who act that crazy have almost gotten me killed before, so I smiled, spoke politely, and let her play out her little Karen drama of being so sly and superior as she politely insulted me.
This kind of thing has become routine here in the #SFBA with it mostly being women, though twice this year I've had white men follow and interrogate me, photographing my registration number, absolutely certain my bike must be stolen.

This is me a decade after the picture of me with the blond, burgundy, and dark blue Mohawk, playing live with one of my childhood mentors, the late James "Pigmeat" Jarrett on piano (me with the 1970 Gibson Les Paul Custom).
That was only a few years before he died and left my world smaller and colder. That is the problem, there was no culture for me to go back to and find others who shared music like him and all the others I have lost in the years since.

The picture was taken by the Enquirer Magazine from outside Arnold's Bar, the oldest continuously operating in Cincinnati, Ohio.

This same year I home built an Intel 286-based PC running DR DOS with the GEM GUI and started a desktop publishing business using Ventura Publisher 3.0. To keep costs low, I used Freedom of Press, a software RIP with Postscript emulation with output to an HP Laserjet hacked with a VisualEdge card that doubled its stock 300 dpi resolution.
I let my customers assume I was just taking orders and delivering their jobs because nobody believed a young Black kid had those computer skills, and also couldn't let them know I wasn't using a Mac because they were also brainwashed into believing only Apple hardware and software was capable of the quality work I produced.
I had to sell the business after SBA/SCORE told me desktop publishing wasn't a service or a product. The two white female UC students who took it over were supported by and approved for a business loan using the business plan I wrote by the same people who had already rejected it.

If this were a pregnant white woman, there would be a firestorm of outrage coast to coast, even if she was armed and threatened the life of a police officer.
But an unarmed, pregnant Black woman only "suspected" of a petty thief, and posing no threat is put down like a dangerous animal.
This is not a few bad apples, or a police problem, it's the manufactured culture of #whiteness and the state-sponsored racial class system that cultivates and defends it.
