2. Turn on the DRF-type stubs we’d already installed but never wired up. It was flagging serializer-field errors, and we never figured it out until now.
Yes, mypy is slow, but I think there is value in running it on Django codebases!

It was also very useful to look at the false positives, and we were able to make two changes that reduced them by half:
1. Stop type-checking test files. No true positives were ever caught by this, and dynamic attrs from baker/setUpTestData are a common source of false positives

2026-07-06 12:28:02 UTC

We reviewed 4,978 mypy runs in our Django app:
• 4,731 green
• 246 failed
Of the 246 failures:
• 173 false positives
• 73 real issues
• 39 caught only by mypy and no other check!
Some noise, but it prevented real bugs from reaching production. 🎉

Fedidevs had quite an outage today. It went offline just as I went to bed and I didn't see it until I woke up this morning 🫣
Still better uptime than GitHub 😅

Can't wait for lazy imports in Python 3.15! I spent a bunch of time and tokens over the weekend inlining heavy imports so that they don't get loaded during initial start of a Django app.
The `https://manage.py check` command is now 3.8x faster (9.45s down to 2.48s).

I wrote a blog post about some of the options for adding type checking to your Django project!
Historically, Django projects have been tough to type-check, but the future feels bright, especially if PEP 827 gets accepted!

Day 1 of #adventofcode felt a bit harder than previous day 1 puzzles. It took me way longer to figure out part 2 than I care to admit, but I'm blaming this on my sleepy brain 😅
My code took 1.1ms for both parts without any perf optimizations 🎉
Eleven more to go!

2025-10-11 09:23:55 UTC

I've improved the performance of the starter packs list query from about 200ms to 2ms. 🎉
The trick was to stop dynamically computing the number of accounts in a starter pack and instead precompute it in a column.
A bit more work on each update, but worth it!

Anybody in my social circles has any experience with vcrpy? Is it a good tool to use for testing integrations with 3rd party APIs or best to use something like RESPX and create all the response fixtures manually?

interesting. I have more questions if you don’t mind 😅
Is it always one object per fixture? How do you handle lists of objects or crating an object hierarchy like company - project - task - user?

2025-03-25 18:18:13 UTC

- reply

do you end up with one or more functions per model? Feels a bit too boilerplatey to me. What I love the most about baker (as opposed to something like Faker) is that you don't have to write any extra classes/functions to generate model instances. You add baker.make calls to setUpTestData and you are good to go.

2025-03-25 13:00:48 UTC

I love pytest, but I could never get used to its fixture system.
However, pytest combined with Django's TestCase/SimpleTestCase is amazing, especially when paired with pytest-watcher!

I figured out that django-browser-reload was preventing gunicorn from shutting down cleanly.
In production (where django-browser-reload isn't enabled), I was seeing SIGKILL because of memory issues, so not related to worker shutdown as I initially thought.
I'm unsure if this helps you debug your issue, though.

2025-03-23 20:21:55 UTC

- reply

I think what I'm seeing is a bit different. I don't have any issues with runserver, but if gunicorn serves one request, that worker won't exit cleanly and will require a SIGKILL.

2025-03-23 08:00:05 UTC

Has anyone been dealing with gunicorn workers running a Django app not shutting down gracefully and needing to be killed with SIGKILL?
The weird thing is that I can reproduce this locally with DEBUG=True but not with DEBUG=False. Any hints on how to debug?

Update: You should now be to add todon.eu and todon.nl to starter packs again.
Keep in mind that the instance defaults are privacy centered so I about half of the accounts still won’t be eligible until they enable discoverable and opt in to search engine indexing in their account settings.

2025-01-26 23:39:35 UTC

Hey, yes, admin of todon.eu and todon.nl asked me to block his sites because not all aspects of fedidevs are opt-in.

don't you loose all the writes that happen after the `litestream restore` command finishes and before all the traffic switches to the new container?

2025-01-04 01:38:28 UTC

- reply

the premise of litestack is that you don't need to scale horizontally, because you can run a single server with 192cores which should be more than enough compute for most apps.
Your app will have low latency (no networking between db and code) and will generally be simpler, but you’ll never be able to guarantee higher nines of availability because you’ll eventually have to reboot that one server…
Distributed sqlite is a headache, better to use MongoDB instead 😂

2025-01-03 15:18:33 UTC

- reply

I think you can reproduce the whole of litestack in Django already:
Cache: `DatabaseCache` backend works with SQLite, right?
Queue/pub/sub: https://github.com/RealOrangeOne/django-tasks + DatabaseBackend
Full text search: ORM already supports it
But I guess we could wrap it all in a separate package for marketing purposes? 😂

I've been building starter packs for Mastodon in my spare time and today I want to share what I've built with the community:
https://fedidevs.com/starter-packs/
I've started building this when I saw how popular starter packs on Bluesky are and I think a feature like this is even more critical for Mastodon where it's harder to find people to follow across thousands of instances.
Only a small number starter packs are available right now, but I'm hoping the community will add more soon! ❤️

2024-12-01 17:09:57 UTC

Great! I imported the list into your starter pack.
Many of the accounts were from instances I haven't indexed/seen before, so accounts were not showing up in the search.
I definitively want to support nondev starter packs, so this is excellent feedback for me. I'll work on improving the UI for when the instance is not indexed, but in the meantime, if you have any other accounts to import, don't hesitate to send them my way!

2024-12-01 00:00:24 UTC

@npub1p6n…xcze Hey Antoine! I saw that you'd created a starter pack on fedidevs! Sorry, I don't have a way for you to import accounts, but if you send me the list of accounts that you want to add, I'll add them to your starter pack. Cheers!

It's okay to do this in some cases, but in general, you should set up CloudFront with signed URLs to better control who can access the uploaded files.
Django Storages supports signed URLs out of the box, but I couldn't find good docs on how to set it up. Any leads?

2024-11-23 10:00:06 UTC

This past week, I've spent a lot of time researching how to set up Django Storages with S3. Almost every blog or tutorial I've seen asks you to make the S3 bucket public, even though the AWS Console UI tries to discourage you from it:

Do you have a blog post/docs explaining the benefits of packaging an app that's not getting published on PyPI/private repo that I could read to better understand your point of view?
I've always seen it as a ritual that's easy to mess up and break a deployment without many benefits, but now I'm beginning to think there's more to it and I want to learn more about it.

2024-08-29 07:34:45 UTC

- reply

I don't know if I fully agree with this, I worked on “engineered” Python projects (Django/Flask) for over 10 years and I never saw a practical benefit to having the web app packaged.
To me lib vs app distinction fits better in my brain. You create a package when you want to use it as a lib in another project.

2024-08-29 07:27:14 UTC

- reply

I wouldn't say it's a step back. It's a simpler default that covers more use cases.
It's easier for someone like you to figure out how to add the packaging than it is for someone who has just finished the Django tutorial to figure out how to remove it, or worse, figure out how to properly package a Django app.

2024-08-28 20:06:41 UTC

Amazing! The uv team shipped first class support for Python projects that are not designed as packages (think Django aplications!).
They even switched some defaults around to better support this use case! 💚

There is probably a measurable difference when the tracing is on, but practically I don't think it makes an actual impact at least not in Python.
Most tracing tools also allow you to configure the sample rate so you can have tracing on for like 0.1% of your requests which will still show you trends but limits the impact.

Hm... l managed to shave of 100ms of rendering time by inlining an inclusion tag, that I was using inside a for loop.
I'll report back if this change also translates in a similar improvement in prod where the cached template loader is used.

yeah, could be, but I'm now digging into this and it looks like template rendering is taking the longest even in some faster requests. I'll see if I can figure out what could be causing this.

the SD card issue was my own blunder. I am using an SD card that can only read up to 4mb/, but I could have easily gotten one that goes up to 100mb/s 😅
Also, this was the only trace that I have out of 100k requests from yesterday that was over 400ms long.

the SD card that I'm using is too slow for this disk caching to be viable 😅

There is one 2.7ms db query that gets run during template rendering. The other three queries are run before the rendering starts and are also below 200ms, so I'm pretty sure the template rendering took the longest at around 500ms.
The raspberry pi doesn't have the fastest CPU so this might not be an issue on a regular host.

First time that I see template rendering being a bit of a bottle neck in a Django app.
This was on a Raspberry Pi 4 while all 4 cores were over 80%.

I've just spent one hour debugging why some websites on a particular Windows machine weren't loading.
I figured out that only websites available through ipv6 were working and ipv4 websites were not. Pinging 8.8.8.8 was also timing out. 😱

I’ll try it out, but the browser support really isn't great 😅

yes, put your name/contact on the title page and then next slide should be the content of your talk and you introduce yourself as you go through it. A dedicated about me slide should be avoided.

Quick takeaway from the public speaking workshop: you don’t need an about me slide.
BRB while I update my presentations 😂
