With a number of LGBTQ+ people on the team here at the Newsmast Foundation, #Pride is very close to our hearts.
But, we know that for many people Pride doesn't look like a parade or a party. For some, it's a quiet moment at home, a chance to reflect, to hold loved ones closer, to think of those who threw the first rocks.
Pride is a celebration. Pride is a protest. Pride is hope for all the #LGBTQ+ people across the world who aren't yet able to live freely.

We're almost halfway through 2026 🤯
This year has already seen an increase in challenges for the Social Web, but particularly with moderation.
Many of the servers we use are moderated by normal people who aren't getting paid. They're being informed and educated by @npub1y2r…kvzk - an organisation that's leading the way on Social Web moderation, but who still aren't getting paid!

Behind the scenes she's been helping build more efficient systems. As our Apps for Change programme keeps growing in popularity, it's important we get these systems in place now. She's also been in the spotlight, helping us grow our network at in-person events and online.
Perhaps most importantly, her influence on the team has averaged in at least one gelato stop a day at in-person events 🍨

Hi Johanna, thanks for checking out the Newsmast app! Glad you like it.
We've learnt a lot building apps for local communities, news publishers, creators, and professional organisations. They each have unique needs and interesting suggestions that will help the Social Web be more accessible for all.
We'll soon be consolidating all those suggestions into one out of the box experience with easily customised modules.
The Newsmast app was the first and our playground when it came to learning. Some of our other apps have leapfrogged it in terms of development, but soon we'll be going back to give Newsmast a bit of TLC.

Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia.
This year #IDAHOBIT explores the themes of democracy and the role LGBTQIA+ people and their rights play in signalling true democracy.
Here in the UK, we're seeing the safety of LGBTQ+ people decline rapidly. Data published earlier this week by ILGA-Europe now places the UK as 22nd in Europe for LGBTQ+ protections. In 2015, the UK led in these rankings.
We have to do more.

Hi Igor, there's not much difference besides who owns the server! Mo-Me is run and maintained by the @npub1pte…3u5l team (with our help). We worked with them to build an app as part of their Media Liberation Day campaign.
The Newsmast app is run by us and uses our newsmast.social server.

Hi Jonathan, thanks so much for taking a look into what we're all about!
To answer your questions, our work with @npub14rp…za3l is still in very early stages and is slow progress - that's why there's not too much out about it yet. We hope that once the Totnes Pulse project goes live we will be able to produce a case study on it and our work with Bonfire.
Originally we integrated with WordPress and Ghost because of their ActivityPub integrations, but we're now working with pilot projects across a number of CMSes.
Channel . org was our attempt to deliver custom feeds to the Fediverse. It's still in beta and has been shadowed whilst we work on our Apps for Change offering (hence why the messaging is a little out of date).

Hi, our Newsmast app is like any other Mastodon client in that it redesigns how you interact with Mastodon.
Admittedly, it's a little out of date as we've been building more advanced apps for organisations and partners who want to join the Social Web through their own instance/app combo.

Many of the partners we're working with self-host so that the data is completely on their servers, owned and maintained by them. They even publish on their own app store accounts, so that they are completely in control of the application and its data.
Many of these partners often have existing in person communities before we begin working with them.
Surveillance is harder to monitor. Some partners we work with are careful about signups, only allowing accounts they approve on the server. Others are more open and therefore may be facing higher risk of infiltration.

At the Newsmast Foundation, we're working to support local communities by providing digital spaces for them to come together. Places they can organise, and inform as a collective.
